Magic to feature new starting lineup for awhile?
Early word is that Bass' ankle could keep him out for a while. It is "only" a sprain, but ankle sprains can be serious (just ask Grant Hill). This will require the Magic to feature a new starting linup until he heals. Options:
1) PG: Nelson/GA/Duhon
SG: JJ/Jrich/GA
SF: Jrich/Q Rich/Hedo
PF: Hedo/Anderson/Malik
C: Howard/Anderson/Malik
2) PG: Nelson/Duhon
SG: GA/JJ/J rich
SF: Jrich/Q Rich/Hedo
PF: Hedo/Anderson/Malik
C: Howard/Anderson/Malik
3) PG: Nelson/GA/Duhon
SG: Jrich/JJ
SF: Q Rich/Hedo/JRich
PF: Hedo/Anderson/Malik
C: Howard/Anderson/Malik

4 reasons
1: The Magic have the most depth at PG, SG, SF (especially with Bass injured) so it made sense to bump Hedo down
2: There’s been little reason to believe that Malik is healthy enough to play any minutes and someone has to play behind Howard and that’d be a lot of minutes for Anderson if he was still starting; in other words, who plays the 4 and 5 when Anderson and Howard both need to rest
3: What happens when Anderson and Howard both pick up early fouls (similar to issue in 2)
4: Hedo has to play some 4 so he might as well start when he’ll have Dwight on the floor to help out on D
you forgot about Clark
he is healthy enough to be in the rotation instead of malik
Q: Jj redick, what does it mean that u lead the team in scoring in the 4th quarter? JJ's answer: "we blow out a lot of teams"
"Other"
PG: Nelson, GA, Duhon
SG: J-Rich, JJ, GA
SF: Hedo, Q-Rich, J-Rich, Clark
PF: Anderson, Hedo, Clark, Allen
C: Howard, Anderson, Allen
Bass was playing both starting PF and backup C, so I don’t know why Anderson wouldn’t be able to do the same. Also, we haven’t seen word that Allen can go, but the last I heard he was expected back this week so it’s possible to see him play a few mins. here and there for rest/garbage purposes.
Also…a fun thought experiment I came up with…with two pre-conditions. If Hedo’s back is ok and he can play ‘facilitator’ and if Clark can show decent play on the defensive end…then how about this:
PG: Hedo
SG: J-Rich (offense) / Q-Rich (defense)
SF: Clark
PF: Anderson
C: Howard
A no-PG lineup where the shortest guy on the floor for the Magic is J/Q-Rich, who aren’t exactly “small” guys. The rest of the crew is 6’10"-plus. I’d just be really curious how that lineup would do.

Sounds great in theory
Until Turk or Clark ends up defending either defending a point or a 2 guard. And I do not think either of the Rich’s could defend a point. But the length would definitely cause some problems. If Clark can defend a 2 guard, then you could play that. I would definitely feel bad for whatever PG would have to guard Turk.

interesting
That lineup is one I have seen proposed for the Heat, but with the possible tweak of having J-Rich play SF and JJ play SG.
Agree that Anderson could possibly cover both PF and backup Center, but then the issue is having Hedo cover both starting SF and backup PF, putting him near 40 minutes if Anderson’s minutes were to mirror Bass’s as a starting PF. Trying to keep Hedo and Anderson fresh enough, especially on defense with them splitting Bass’s minutes AND hedo still getting starting SF minutes seems problematic, even if Hedo’s back is healthy.
Two things:
First, in regards to the ‘normal’ lineup, I agree that it could be a lot of minutes for Hedo and Anderson. Especially considering Hedo’s back issues, I’d say pair back his minutes in both positions, and have him be more of a spot up stretch-4 when he’s playing PF. Since the Magic are currently struggling defensively, I think Q should get some time to try and help in that department (as well as get some min. to try and get his shot back/going). They still have Q, J-Rich, and Clark to play at the 3 spot.
As for the ‘big’ lineup, the whole point would be to overwhelm the floor with size, which having JJ at SG and J-Rich at SF simply would not do. Hedo can ball-handle like a PG, so he does that. J-Rich is the starting SG already, so there you go. While Clark may seem oversized for the position, he is actually a ‘natural’ 3 (like Hedo). Then you have Anderson playing his natural 4 spot, and Howard obviously in the paint. You get the size, while still having everyone play in positions that are comfortable to them – really dangerous. The question would be whether Hedo, J-Rich, plus Clark would prove too much of a defensive liability…if you trade out Q-Rich for J-Rich, then it limits it to just Hedo and Clark while reducing the potential offense some.
I don’t know if it would work…but I’d love to see that lineup out there for some minutes, just to see how it does.

Turk has always been much less effective at PF than we tend to think.
I’d put him at PG or all-purpose 6th man before I start him at PF.
Otis Smith, what you've just done is one of the most insanely idiotic things I have ever heard of. At no point in your rambling, incoherent trades were you even close to anything that could be considered a rational thought. Everyone on this blog is now dumber for having witnessed it. I award you no points, and may God have mercy on your soul.
Not super effective, but not terrible.
However, it’s worth noting that he’s obviously better than Allen and Clark hasn’t yet proved himself. Maybe now is the time for Clark to step up and show he’s worth having in the rotation?

Hedo shouldn't be anywhere near the 4 spot
Change the rotation as little as possible – start Anderson, bring Clark and Allen in when necessary. Maybe sign some chump(s) on a few ten day contracts if required.
because it's been working so well lately?
SVG has hinted at possible lineup changes anyway, now’s a good time to try some out.
No problem with Hedo at the 4. His performance would likely mirror Shard’s this year at the 4. Besides, in the 4 out, 1 in offense, positional designations outside of C are pretty meaningless.
On the rebounding front, the Magic have the 3rd highest rebounding margin in the league at +3.5 so taking a small hit at rebounding isn’t a big deal.
Rashard was a decent defender at 4, and I doubt that Hedo's defense at that position comes even close to mirroring Rashard's.
Hedo’s problem is both the foot-speed and strength. He loses to tall and speedy 4’s on length and speed, to shorter/stronger ones on strength and speed, and to bigger/slower ones on strength.
Yes, but
Not sure he is any more of a liability at the 4 defensively than he is at the 3. He’s foot speed becomes a bigger issue at the 3. Plus, most NBA 4s offensive game is inside, where Dwight can provide some assitance
He did defend sdecently against Dirk in the Dallas game.
Bosh is a finesse player as well. I think Turk would be able to check him. Heck you could probably put Anderson on whatever Center they have and sick Dwight on opposing 4’s if neccessary.
Roll Bass and War Ryno for me
It hasn't been working lately
Because nobody is playing defense, something that isn’t going to be fixed by putting a slow, undersized, bad post defending guy who doesn’t know the rotations at that position as a power forward.
Turk has been tried at the 4 at various times by various teams around the league, including us. It’s never worked. There’s no reason to believe it will work now.

Shoot...
appearently, SVG doesn’t read fanposts on the Pinstriped Post.
Okay - it seems like Ryan's greatness has been exaggerated.
He’s better off burning the opposition’s second units… right now starting Hedo at the 4 will be a defensive blunder, especially since his main role should be playmaking and shooting, not clamping down the Garnetts, Boshes, or even the Blatches.
Earl Clark would be an interesting idea. I think now with Bass gone Otis should really look for short term reinforcements, not rely on a roster that has clearly shown that it’s not big enough to defend the paint with Dwight on the bench
He seems to do that all the time when he starts, though
Teams go straight at him, he gets shaken, commits a couple of bad fouls and gets pulled.

yeah, well it seemed that way against the teams he started in November
and his confidence in his shooting somewhat drains with the tentative approach early in a game.
