"Lopez ready to rebound in 2011-12"
As a Nets fan it seems like you guys are very down on Lopez. I understand his shortcomings as a player, but he seems very under appreciated among your fan base. I feel as though that you guys may have some misconceptions about the player because of his team's lack national exposure, his regression last year, superficial statistical analysis, and the national sports media's perception of him. I'm not trying to change your mind on him, just provide some insight on Brook because the reality is he could very well end up in Orlando sooner or later.
Here is an article from ESPN New York on Lopez' disappointing 2010-2011, and how he can bounce back this year.
By Mike Mazzeo
Nets coach Avery Johnson believes that Brook Lopez can be a 20-and-10 center someday.
Point guard Deron Williams feels strongly that Lopez can be a perennial all-star. A top-5 NBA center.
As for Lopez?
“Hopefully,” the 23-year-old said Monday. “We’ll see what happens this season.”
The Nets are clearly expecting big things for their big man in the middle. They know he can score. He’s done that in the past. But they want him to become a better rebounder.
Consider: Lopez finished 16th out of 28 qualified centers in rebounding (a career-worst 6.0 per game, 1.6 below his career average) and second-to-last in rebounds per 48 minutes last season.
“Maybe he’ll never be a ‘Dennis Rodman offensive rebounder,’ but where he was last year is not good enough,” Johnson said.
Lopez agrees with his coach’s assessment.
“I was being lazy first and foremost,” Lopez said. “Hump [Kris Humphries] would do such a good job. I’d see him do his thing and kind of leak out offensively. I didn’t real crash the offensive boards. There’s no excuse for that because I don’t leak out offensively.”
Lopez has been working with assistant coach Popeye Jones without a basketball, adding a swim move and spin move to his repertoire on the offensive glass.
A main focus for Lopez heading into the 2011-12 campaign has been increasing his “rebounding attempts.”
“This year, we’re watching him on film,” Johnson said. “If he gets the rebound, great, but it’s all about did you attempt to go for the rebound?”
Lopez had just 10 10-or-more rebound games last season -- an unacceptable number for a player 7-feet tall.
“I have a lot of confidence that he’s going to take the next step,” Johnson said. “I think it’s time. He can get 10 or 11 rebounds in one game, but it’s about consistency, and that’s what we’re looking for. Night in and night out.
“He’s capable of defending the basket and blocking shots. But I don’t want him to forget about coach’s 22 points.”
In Saturday’s preseason opener, Lopez filled up the stat sheet to the tune of 15 points, 11 rebounds and five blocks. According to Johnson, he also had 10 more rebound attempts, far more than he had in any game last season.
“Last season he liked to ‘arena watch,’” Johnson said. “He didn’t have that 911 urgency to go after the rebound.”
Johnson believes Lopez can and will improve in that area.
“He doesn’t have to get 16 rebounds, but we don’t want it to be six,” Johnson said. “We think what he did Saturday can be an average game for him.”
Lopez believes he needs to continue to improve on his pick-and-roll defense, something he’s struggled with. He’s working on “blitzing” a lot more this year.
He also said he’d love to have Humphries -- the fifth-leading rebounder in the league -- back.
“I’m not gonna say no to Kris,” Lopez said. “There’s no question he helped us last year. Obviously that’s not really in my hands, though. He’s working out in Minnesota. But I’d like to have him back here. No question.”
Williams says is making steps in the right direction to become a 20-and-10 top-5 NBA center.
“I’m going to stay on him and make sure he achieves those goals,” Williams said.

I'm sure you guys know basketball very well
But honestly how many New Jersey Nets games have you watched? They way Brook is talked about here clearly not enough. I’m not the one being resistant here. I understand that Bynum/Gasol is a better package…but that has yet to be offered

I watch and play fantasy basketball like its my religion
if the Nets are the only team we can trade to then yeah fine I’ll take it..but the Lakers are gonna give us Bynum and Gasol whether you like it or not..they cant be the 2nd best team in LA

Isn't that the point really?
Our organisation NEEDS to get Dwight, the Lakers want Dwight. The Nets are all in to get Dwight. What other organisation is prepared to give up any asset at their disposal for him? I don’t disagree with the Magic’s approach of waiting for the best deal, but the likelihood is it will come from the Nets

yeah
i would hope that too if I was a Nets fan lol

Because we are moving to New York
and the success of our franchise depends on us being able to compete with a very good Knick’s team right away. We can’t afford a rebuild and we committed our future to Deron already trading Favors and draft picks to Utah.

but Brook Lopez is a top 5 center
you should be fine

Top 5 center and a top 5 NBA player are not the same.
The Nets have now put them selves in a Dwight or bust position. Brook can put up top 5 center numbers, but there just isn’t enough on the roster to wow NY fans or ultimately please Deron. I really don’t get the animosity here.

you are trying
to big up Lopez to us…shows us how desperate Nets fans are getting

If I wanted to do that I would have posted the puff piece the nets website did
instead of ESPN’s story. Your resistance to having a legitimate discussion with a Nets fan says more about your fan base’s fear. I don’t understand why you keep bringing that up. Yes the Nets and then fans are desperate to bring Dwight to Brooklyn. It doesn’t change the fact that the Nets and Magic have been linked to numerous rumors, Dwight is willing to sign to the Nets, and the Nets are going to go all out to make it happen. I can live with the reality that Dwight can end up in LA, but it doesn’t seem you are willing to accept the reality Brook could very likely be traded to the Nets. I posted news and what it thought was a some what insightful look at Brook and expectations for this season. Your free to take whatever you want from it, but instead you focus on my team’s desire and necessity to land Dwight for whatever reason

its not realistic
we just rejected Brook, Wallace, and 5 first round picks… i doubt u can offer anything better.. and yes the Lakers will give us more no matter what

Did the reject the trade because it wasn't suitable?
Or are the magic waiting it out because they didn’t have any urgency to pull the trigger instead of continuing to shop? I guess none of you value cap space either, since dumping Hedo’s $11 mill a year contract is not mentioned. You doubt we could do better, but did you even consider Wallace a possibility before the rumors? There has been plenty of speculation of what the Lakers will do, but nothing to back it up yet. If the Lakers play like contenders I don’t think they gut a contending team for Dwight.

I actually agree with you, Superman, but...
In this supposed trade, 4 of the picks went to Portland for Wallace. The Magic got only NJ’s 2012 1st round pick.
Can we just start playing games on the court already?!
oh yea
even worse then lol

I accept the reality
When you have GM as utterly moronic as Otis Smith, you accept any reality.
You seem to think that Magic fans not liking the idea of getting Lopez is the same as not accepting it. It’s not.

Brook Lopez will never, ever, ever win an NBA title
He has no value to me.
He’s not a bad player – he’s just the sort of lazy inconsistent offensive minded player who is soft under the basket and consistently gets massively overpaid by stupid teams because he can score occassionally.
If Nets fans think he’s going to be so great, y’all are welcome to him. I’d rather lose Howard for nothing than have Lopez stinking up our frontcourt.
by eltharion_doa on Dec 20, 2011 3:03 AM EST up reply actions
Which isn't to say the Nets won't put together the best package
I just don’t want Lopez as part of it. I’d take the draft picks and cap space.
