Around SBN: Ray Allen Fighting Age, Injury And His New Role

Brandon Roy.....would you take him if he was amnesty'd?

I know, I know, I know. I get it. Yes I know. I understand. Brandon Roy is done though right? Well probably. However, he did have a really good game against Dallas in the playoffs which reminded us what he could still be. But I do not agree with bringing him as the starting 2 guard for the Magic. Either Jason Richardson should be brought back or JJ should be handed the reins. However Brandon Roy would take a minimum contract, since he is still getting all his money from Portland.

Yes he has no cartilage, but that doesn't mean you can not use him for 15-20 minutes coming off the bench. He would come in hungry(in terms of trying to prove himself) and if he does perform to at least 75% of what he was that is still a very solid player. Especially coming off the bench. You look at his stats after the surgery and it looks really bad. Before the surgery they were solid.

I would definitely take a look at him if it was for a minimum contract. Thoughts Orlando?

For any team i think brandon roy would be a nice guard off the bench

his game wasnt just his ability to score, hes also a very terrific play maker and ball handler. Any team looking/hoping to contend and wanting to add solid depth at a very low price should be interested. But you would have to assume that at any point he could go down to injury and possibly not come back. I think hes worth the risk though…

I dont care what the D.N.A. Says, the Guy wearing number 12 Cannot be Kirk Hinrich, he is definetly Kurt. Kirk can actually play basketball!

I'd say look at him for a minimum contract, BUT

some tool will give him more than a minimum.

Not a lot more, but more. And if that’s the case, let him go.

I don't get the whole 'pop-tart cats pooping rainbows thing,' but then, I'm old. So, there it is.

true

But assuming we don’t trade Dwight, why not come and try your lot with him?

Knowing the terrible luck the Magic had with Grant Hill and all his injuries...

…I would stay away from Brandon Roy, even with a minimum contract.

Hopefully things will work out for Roy somewhere though; he’s a really good player but has the bad knee.

Actually, I think quite the contrary

1) our luck can’t possibly be that bad, can it?

and on a more serious note, Brandon Roy is still a pretty good player and a talented scorer. Is he worth a minimum contract? Absolutely. If anyone doesn’t think so then you’re basically saying he shouldn’t be in the league any more because he isn’t worth it. In fact, I’d even go so far as to say he’d be worth close to the full MLE (if there is one. If not, that’s about the max I think would be worth it to take a chance on a guy like him). I think the only way to convince Dwight to stay is to try and put some actual pieces around him, and Brandon Roy is that, even while only being 75% of what he used to be.

You can't reason with stupid.

Yes, Roy is a pretty good player and a talented scorer, but...

…the fact is he has two bad knees which both underwent surgery of January of this year, and has a lack of cartilage in both knees which makes it pretty hard for them to get any better than they are now.

The dropoff in Roy’s statistics since the 2008-09 season is pretty steep. In the 08-09 season, when he was healthy, he averaged 37.2 minutes in 78 games played, along with a scoring average of 22.6 points on 48% FG shooting. Last season, he averaged just 27.9 minutes in 47 games played, averaging just 12.2 points while his FG% plummeted to just 40%.

His averages per 36 minutes fell noticeably, also. In the 08-09 season, he averaged 21.9 ppg, 5.0 assists, and 4.6 rebounds per 36 minutes. Last season, those numbers dropped to 15.7 ppg, 3.5 assists and 3.3 rebounds per 36 minutes.

I know he had an outstanding Games 3 and 4 in the playoffs last season, where he scored 16 points in Game 3 and 24 points in Game 4 while shooting a combined 15 of 23. Meantime, in the other four games, he scored just 16 points combined on 7 of 21 shooting.

In summary, even though he’s a good guy, a good player and scorer, you just don’t know what you’re going to get from him on a game-to-game basis or even if he will play in any given game because of his troublesome knees which aren’t going to get any better. For those reasons, I wouldn’t sign him if he was available.

He's still better than Arenas.

Someone I DO want back and back ASAPis Rashard Lewis

I am going to give Otis Smith some credit here, trust me it is not easy, but he probably knew there was going to be an amnesty clause. Question for Magic fans, how hard would it have been to cut Rashard Lewis, a great(and I mean GREAT) locker room and off the court person, and someone vital to the team. Also apparently Dwight’s best friend. Now he can resign and bring him back.

Magic can ship out Bass and Lewis brings back the solid VASTLY UNDERRATED defense back to the 4. Anderson is solid as the back up. Harper plugs into the 3 keep the floor spaced giving us TWO Rashard Lewis’s on the court. Otis Smith could have potentially done two solids, one Gil gets his money and Rashard gets his and then Rashard gets and still plays for Orlando without having the media/fans ever COMPLAINING about the “CONTRACT” anymore. Now I am probably giving Otis way too much credit, but you never know. He is a former player, and players do take care of players. Just saying.

Aye

I totally agree that Lewis is a tremendously underrated defender. He’s a guy that never makes mistakes and is always in the right spot. He isn’t a defensive playmaker but his positioning is good, which allows Dwight to make highlight play on Rashard’s man.

I also agree in principle to bringing Lewis back. I am a little worried with Anderson, Bass, and now Harper that that is just too many power forwards. I know that you specified trading Bass away in which case I would be even more for reuniting with Lewis. I just think that with the current roster I don’t see Otis Smith aggressively pursuing Lewis in the open market.

Some other gentlemen I am keeping an eye on should they get released that might fit in well at shooting guard (or other position): Shawn Marion, Rip Hamilton, Metta World Peace, Steve Blake, Mike Miller, Brandon Roy, Fransisco Garcia, John Salmons, Richard Jefferson, Linas Kleiza.
(some are more likely to get ’nastied than others)

Harper is a 3

Roll Bass and War Ryno for me

by Mateo9399 on Nov 4, 2011 5:08 PM EDT up reply actions

Meh

He’s a 3/4 combo. He’s taller than Bass and stronger than Anderson is. And he played Power Forward at Richmond. Here’s a quote on him from nbadraft.net:

Lacks a true position: Despite having excellent speed and agility, he’s a bit of a tweener lacking the bulk to defend post players and the lateral speed to defend quick 3s … Gets pushed off the block far too easily … Needs to bulk up and become a full time power forward

I mean, you may project him as a 3 in the lineup. I’m not saying you’re wrong. You’re probably right.

But the same thing could be said about Lewis. They’re essentially the same player and so Harper still adds to the glut of forwards that would make adding Lewis redundant without a plan in place to move someone like Brandon Bass.

I'd certainly welcome Sweet Lou back

Despite his struggles on the court, I did like seeing him play for us and I too thought he was underrated as someone who could cause match up problems offensive and defensively at the 3/4.

With B.Roy, I think if you can get him for peanuts and he’s willing to come you give him a chance. Whether he starts or comes off the bench, the guy is always going to be able to contribute to your team. He’s a very clever player and as others have pointed out an able playmaker.

Look at it from this point of view, you certainly wouldn’t want him going to Miami!

Howard – Orton
Anderson – Lewis
Turk – Harper
JJ – Roy
Nelson – Duhon

Could be worse.

I'd be good with that roster.

We’d have guys who fill multiple roles, and more importantly (to me), we’d have guys who know what their roles were. No Bass firing up jumpers every time he got the ball. No Arenas trying to play like he’s in Washington circa 2005. No Duhon being ter-oh wait. Well, can’t always get what you want.
