2010-11 Orlando Magic Preview - Can Tinkerbell Get Them To Grow Out Of NeverLand? :: Around The Association - Golden State Of Mind
Poor Man's Commish, from our sister-site Golden State of Mind, previews the Orlando Magic. The outlook is not optimistic. Of note: the author refers to team GM Otis Smith as "Tinkerbell" and believes the Magic erred in building their team around Dwight Howard; they need an "alpha dog," which Howard isn't.

More garbage about Dwight not being alpha-dog.
Obviously building your team around a top3 player in the league isn’t good enough.

Gotta be honest . . .
I feel like I could have written this column. This column is lacking in substance. It’s a poor man’s Bill Simmons.
So, I am thankful for OPP. I appreciate BenQ’s stuff because I feel like I am learning something. There is usually some knowledge contribution (especially from a statistical perspective) that I would not have uncovered on my own.
I know that it is probably difficult to write constantly about one team, but if the most that you can contribute about other teams is sports-radio rehash (Boston has big bodies, Dwight is too meek, and Miami has three good players) then maybe you should stick to your one.
Sorry to come off harsh, but this guy’s a professional, right? And this article is lacking in professionalism. And there it is.
Having Chris Duhon as SG on the Magic depth chart instead of PG doesn't do much for the writer's credibility

Yeah, I freaked out for a split second when I saw he had only Brandon Bass and Ryan Anderson at PF
They’re good players, and I’m glad we have them, but they are definitely not starting quality for a championship team.

I stopped reading at
Brandon Bass undervalued and Rashard Lewis at SF.
Please don't simply ignore the stats when making your case, 'cause "...your eyes lie to you sometimes..."

I think both are somewhat valid points, really. Not indefensible.
I don’t think that Bass is undervalued per se, though. My stance here has been, and still is, that it’s his skill-set, and not his talent, that’s made his time here a bit rough so far.
(and I always point to his averaging 19 minutes per game for Dallas, a playoff team in the tough West, for two seasons as evidence of his value)
Why do you 'ban' or 'close' discussions about Jason Williams. Just curious. Thanks.

Not that this is on topic for this post, but it is in a similar vein.
This was the team preview for nba.com
http://www.nba.com/reportcard/summer/2010/magic/
Read the same preview about the Lakers:
http://www.nba.com/reportcard/summer/2010/lakers/?ls=iref:nbahpt1
Obviously they are the defending champs, but it seems whoever wrote the review of the Magic only took into account what happened with the team this summer, while the Lakers review includes all players who they had previously on their team. It is laughable how they cherry pick the crap that goes into these articles. An “A” for defense for the Lakers who were pretty good at it anyways, but to give the Magic a “C” for defense when we had the best fg% against last season just irritates the hell out of me.
