Matt Barnes Arrested

Matt Barnes was arrested on suspicion of domestic violence.

http://sports.espn.go.com/los-angeles/nba/news/story?id=5549456

I think the news report suggests that this was a fight, rather than a man beating his wife, but that Barnes was the aggressor.

It's tempting to paint Barnes with the "thug" label, given his appearance and on-court behavior, but appearances can be deceiving and on-court behavior isn't necessarily indicative of the way a man lives his life.

Keep the comments respectful, or BenQ will probably block this faster than Dwight hits a Derek Fisher floater. :)

I will agree with you on that. Barnes really seemed to have gone bananas once that show went on the air…its also around the time he fell out of favor with management. I dont know what it was but he started making what happened on that stupid show personal…his whole twitter fight with Shaq’s ex wife was bizarre. Its reality TV Barnes, no one gives a flip about it….why you gotta take it so seriously? See below, Im much happier to have Q than Barnes at this point.

Reality TV, while "entertainment" for us, was actually reality for Barnes though

I’m not saying I would get into a twitter battle with some moron whose only claim to fame is she married a really big & tall guy and bore his children, but I would probably feel insulted and angry if somebody were talking about me in a derogatory manner on TV. I would also be pretty upset if somebody were berating my girlfriend on TV as well, so I can understand his reaction.

God, why did I watch this stupid show?

Watching the show is an obvious issue. I know there was curiousity behind it initially but too many people watched hence why there is even a second season. The show is called Basketball Wives but they are all either ex-gfs, groupies that slept wit an NBA player, or baba-mamas. Shaq’s ex wife is the exception and she apparently ran her mouth for press and it worked. Barnes fed into it and has obviously let it consume him to the point he crossed the line. The whole thing is a sad depicition of garbage that sells in American culture today as well as a slight embarassment on the Magic organization. Sad.

Two Magic players and one former Magic player were involved with these women. But then again, which NBA player wasn’t….I kid, I kid….but not really.

Maybe

This is why the Magic got rid of him. Not for this specific accident, but maybe because he was too much of a hothead. Oh well.

I liked the on court hothead, we needed some of that

but there is zero excuse for something like this. Zero.

He seriously went off the deep end in April. He obviously hasn’t recovered.

If it were merely a fight, why was he charged with FELONY domestic violence?

I think he did beat her, and she merely fought back.

My experience from working in the court system

is; it’s usually up to the cop what to charge initially because they can likely get you for multiple things. So either the cop thought the violence went well beyond the normal domestic violence (physical, emotional, etc..), the lady may have been pregnant or thought by matt to be, the Cops last name was O’neil, or then again maybe he mouthed off to the cops and that was their revenge.
I assume though that she just looked real beat up because (at least in Florida) you’re going to spend one whole night in jail and can’t just bond out right away, felony or misdemeanor, so he wasn’t going to spend more time in jail for ‘cool down’ time from a verbal argument, or to justify upping the charge as a sort of revenge. Then again this is just using generalities and obviously none of us know the circumstances surrounding this incident.

*sigh*

Is it bad that my first thought when I read this story elsewhere was “Thank f- he’s not with the Magic any more.”

Hope the victim in this, whoever it ends up being, is OK.

I find Matt Barnes to be very classy and I respect his right to pursue happiness.

Still, being arrested for “allegedly” beating a gf/wife (who did have visible injuries when police arrived on scene) AND smacking an opposing coach at some rec league BS (video proves it, so I don’t have to act like there is a shred of doubt and throw in the obligatory “allegedly”) within like a 2 month period…… well, that’s speaks to the character of Barnes as a man.

Innocent until proven guilty

Only applies to people you happen to like, right?

Really?

You really think hiding behind air quoting the word allegedly is concealing the fact you’ve already judged the guy?

by eltharion_doa on Sep 11, 2010 10:43 PM EDT up reply actions

So the cops lied about the obvious signs of a beating?

Be realistic. You wanna tell us about how OJ was eventually vindicated now?

He claims he is innocent, she claims he did nothing wrong, so why would we not believe them?

I do believe that when police arrived Matt probably wasn’t too happy to see them, even if it was he who was the “victim” as he put it. He probably mouthed off to them and they got pissed so they took him in for it. I mean if you were a police officer who responded to a “domestic violence call” your first inclination is that is the male, then you walk up to the scene and it is a tall male w/ tons of tats, a ripped out of the wall phone, and a woman who looks like Gloria (no visible tats, dressed classy on the show) and then the male LIKELY starts berating you, that guy is the one going to jail 99% of the time, no matter what the woman says. I am not saying ANY of this is right, but it is most likely the assumptions that we would all have walking into a situation like that.

At the end of the day

Removing one party from the situation is just about a necessity, and it’s generally going to be the guy they remove.

Even if it’s just to cool the situation down. If Gloria isn’t inclined to press charges, it’s pretty hard to see anything but the case being dropped.
