Why Did we Not Sign Shaq and McGrady????

Hi My fellow Magic Fans,

Have any of you been wondering why we didn't sign Shaquille O'Neal or Tracy Mcgrady? Shaquille O'neal took A small 1.4 Million A year and Tracy Took 1.3 Million dollar deal. The price tag for both of those players went down Alot, Do any of you think that Tracy Mcgrady Or Shaquille O'Neal would have been a good fit back into the Orlando System? Would they make good Back Ups?

Who hasn't openly trashed SVG?

Agreed about T-Mac

As far as Shaq not liking D12, he did let him be on an episode of “Shaq Vs.” this season, so I think the dislike isn’t as strong as many perceive

We don't need Shaq

Even if T-Mac has anything left, it’s not worth gambling on that when you’re a championship team.

For the same reason you don’t take back your girlfriend after she sleeps with another dude in your bed. Iceberg, you obviously see nothing wrong with that. So I’ll leave it there.

NO, NO one thousand times NO!

Wrong

You can say that for T-Mac, but its a different story with the Diesel. He’s not the franchise carrier anymore, but he can still guard any big, including Dwight, in the post without help and shoot a very high percentage.

Agreed on post defense and FG shooting.

But it’s telling that the Cavaliers were 6.1 points better per 100 possessions with Shaq on the bench last year. I think a lot of that has to do with his role. He’s a back-to-the-basket guy who needs plays called for him in order to score. So he instantly, and by necessity, is the focal point of any offense. You take him out, put another guy in, and you get more ball movement, player movement…

I am willing to attribute some of Cleveland’s struggles with Shaq on the floor to Mike Brown’s unimaginative offense. Boston’s isn’t much better, but I have more faith in Doc Rivers’ ability to make Shaq useful than in Mike Brown’s.

His shoddy pick-and-roll defense is also a concern. And has been since he entered the league.

by Evan Dunlap on Sep 17, 2010 1:43 PM EDT up reply actions

Mike Brown is the worst coach to ever win COY

You could drive a truck through the holes in Brown’s “strategy”

I would disagree that Shaq needs to have plays called for him. I would instead say that a team could run another play, and if that failed, you could always dump it down to him on either block and have a favorable matchup. Even at this stage, I would say Shaq has at least a slight advantage over pretty much every player he faces in the low post.

I agree about the pick-and-roll defense being a concern, as teams could kill you if their jumpers are falling….However, the team in the Eastern Conference that poses the biggest threat to the Celtics (the Heat, sorry guys) is exactly the type of team you want shooting jumpers.

I don’t agree with that. I don’t have any advanced statistical metrics cooked up by a team of experts at MIT to back this up, but I have watched every nationally televised game Shaq has played in since ’92, so this is based purely upon my extensive observations.

On offense, Shaq’s man does not leave him. Shaq is very limited in his offensive weaponry at this point (what the heck ever happened to his baseline turn around???), but what he does have is effective. Opposing centers know this and are far less likely to leave him to help close out on driving players because of this. They know that if they leave Shaq to help out, there’s a good chance the ball will be dumped to him for an easy score. Shaq gets no statistical credit for this and it is, IMO, highly underutilized by his teammates (Coach Brown, grrrr!). I don’t know if there is a stat somewhere that shows this, but I would think that driving teammates of Shaq’s are far less likely to have their shot challenged at the rim when Shaq is in the game.

Another way that Shaq is useful without scoring is by simply being on the court. When Shaq is out there, you need a big body to match up with him. You can’t simply run some “high-octane” offense with a scrawny 4 posing as a 5. For example, the Bobcats talking about using Diaw at center for a more up-tempo game…that’s not a possibility unless you want Diaw to foul out quickly. Which I guess brings me to another point….although Shaq is a horrible free throw shooter, he does still easily draw fouls and gets opposing teams into the penalty quicker.

by Max_in_Missouri on Sep 18, 2010 8:51 PM EDT up reply actions

So

The summary of Shaq’s offensive usefulness (unless having the offense run primarily for him) is that you have to guard him, and he draws fouls.

So he’s…one step up from a Christmas tree?

You guard and foul Christmas trees?

Until the Santa Ornament proves it can shoot free throws, then yes.

That’s just sound basketball strategy.

Sure...

If that’s the only offense that’s run against him…run a pick and roll aginst him and he’s completely worthless.

Shaq And Mcgrady

I believe Shaq Would have been a decent backup and we could have kept Gortat as well. I think Shaq Could help Dwight Become the New Shaq. I also Believe that Mcgrady’s Knees have him Tapped out. I think her will contribute to detroit but He won’t shine for them, I think this might be his final year in the NBA. Shaquille O’neal will have most impact on his team this year and will be a difficult matchup against Orlando, Especially in Febuary when Rasheed Wallace Is Set to make his return to fill that last Playoff Roster Spot for the Celtics.

and if you read what was posted above, or paid attention to any of the news from last season

it is painfully evident that shaq would not get along with dwight, nor does he care for stan van gundy. it simply would not have worked at all.

Plus

He’s an a$$hole…I don’t know why anybody old enough to remember his time here would ever want him back.

Shaq has 4 times more rings than everyone on the Magic roster combined.

He must have done something right, considering he was hands-down the Finals MVP in 3 of those 4 ’ships

by Max_in_Missouri on Sep 18, 2010 8:11 PM EDT up reply actions

Who gives a crap how many rings he has. He is an uneffective player at this point in his career, and he dislikes our star player and hates our coach.

No one here wants him on the team, and it is unlikely that anyone in the front office wants him on the team either, so the point is probably moot.

by MagicMark on Sep 18, 2010 10:08 PM EDT up reply actions

You can be as angry as you want, but its true

You think Shaq wanted to come to Orlando anyway? He wants to spend his last couple years on a team that could possibly win it all.

And it is “ineffective”, not “uneffective”.

by Max_in_Missouri on Sep 20, 2010 2:57 PM EDT up reply actions

So why do you care when we say we don't want Shaq here?

And Boston has just as good of a chance at winning the championship this year as Orlando does.

Shaq has been doing the ring chasing for 5 years now, and I don’t think it will end up any different in Beantown.

by MagicMark on Sep 20, 2010 3:31 PM EDT up reply actions

So

Orlando don’t want Shaq, Shaq don’t want Orlando.

What, exactly, is the point of all this then?

lol

Good to know you are all still bitter about him leaving your franchise in shambles 14 yrs ago

I am completely consumed with him leaving the franchise in shambles. I spend every waking moment thinking about Shaq.

Or maybe we are just making jokes? I mean, watch this trailer, and tell me that it is not totally freaking hilarious!

Shaq and T-Mac. Because the players we have are better than them. I would rather take Gortat and Redick over those two even if we got the best out of Shaq and T-Mac with no problems. It’s almost 2011. Wake up.
