Magic Decisions
Tell me what you think... i know some may not be realisitc in your eyes, but lets think about the situation we are in...
Did we really get better this offseason? We resigned Redick which is a plus, we signed Duhon for something Otis Smith sees in him that i sure as heck don't. He'll be solid but not great. Then we signed Q-rich but lost barnes, close to equal swap id say, not significant enough either way to bash the signing, nor praise it. The Magic have a solid enough team to compete and beat 90 percent of the league. There are about 4 teams i could see giving us problems.
We know the Celtics are still the Celtics, the Lakers are still the Lakers, both teams just a year older. Boston will still give us problems, as would the Lakers if we saw them again in the finals. Then you got the Bulls and Thunder who are both going to be better next year, the Bulls with a few offseason moves, and the thunder just because Durant and Co. will be a year older and wiser. Then of course theres our little problem about 4 hours south on Interstate 95. (HEAT).... So are you a believer that the team we have now is going to compete with the Celtics and Lakers of today and the Heat, Bulls, and Thunder of tomorrow? .....
Ok. So if you believe the team we have now can get it done. Great! ... me, however, I have a hard time believing in a Magic team that let me down the past two years. They had Great seasons dont get me wrong. But when you are on that verge of being the at the top of the mountain, it only hurts worse to fall when you're so close to the top.
This brings me up to my next point. There is a top 10 superstar available (supposedly) by the name of Carmelo Anthony. I did some trade scenarios using ESPN Trade Machine. I know a lot have been said, but take a look and let me know what you think and what you think of the rest of my post, thanks.
1)To Denver: Vince Carter and Mickel Pietrus
To Orlando: Carmelo Anthony and A. Affalo - This trade doesnt make much sense in my eyes but i saw a columnist for slam put it down.
2)To Denver: Jameer Nelson, Marcin Gortat, Brandon Bass, Mickel Pietrus, and Rashard Lewis
To Orlando: Carmelo Anthony, Nene hilario, Chauncey Billups
REASONING: Ok. this one is a bit intense and considerable changes are made. But think about it from both sides. First Denver it makes sense because, well, they're getting FIVE potential NBA starters, which could compensate for the loss of superstar Anthony, and keep their fan base intrigued enough and they could still put up a winning record with that group. For the Magic it makes great sense. Magic fans, personal, owners, want to win now! they don't want to take a backseat to miami. Bringing in Billups and Anthony and Nene makes them suddenly great favorites along with the heat to win the east. The key to this trade for the magic, is dumping lewis' contract which still has 3 yrs at about 20 a year left on it. Billups is older (34) but can still play at a high level and brings great leadership. Nene next to dwight to closeout games forms the best frontline in the nba. Another little twitch to the trade, Nene and Billups both have 2 years left on their contract, combined with getting rid of lewis and gortat conrtacts, that gives them potential for a lot of cap room in 2012 when Chris Paul will be a free agent, and perhaps (just saw yesterday) deron williams of the jazz might opt out. something to think about, this trade puts at an elite level right now, while also helping us for the future.
just in case you were wondering the Magic's depth chart would like after the trade:
PG- Billups/Duhon/Williams
SG- Carter/Redick
SF- Anthony/Richardson/Robinson
PF- Anderson/Nene/Orton
C-Howard/Nene/Orton<(possible sign a veteran big man)

Why would Denver trade Nene?
So you can keep knocking but won't knock me down
No love lost, no love found
I see the following happening...
Melo + Afflalo for VC + Anderson + Picks
Reasoning: Pietrus, while a solid player, is not young talent. Him and VC will not be enough.
we are not a losing team that needs a drastic change
yes, melo could improve our team on paper but i think we have all the pieces needed to win a C. we dont really know if melo fits our team.
in OTIS we TRUST...
Actually we know Melo does not fit our system unless he completely changes his game.
Yeah, that’s gonna happen, he’s gonna cut dow to under 20 shots per game, become a 3 point shooter and increase his efficiency by 10%. Yeah, right.
He is what he is, a volume shooter of average efficiency who could make the team worse rather than better.

I'm tired of the hype train...I blame ESPN.
All these people who don’t understand basketball just assume the more well known players you put on a team makes them better. Carmelo would be a negative for us, and to be honest, I’m not sure I would want to almost completely gut our squad just to get CP3 even if we could.
Melo, may not be the best fit for our team but as for CP3... I'll just agree to disagree.
IMHO, CP3 IS worth gutting our team over. He IS just that good and I’d be happy to watch as the Magic rebuild a strong supporting cast around that core. (Which I won’t think would be that hard to do ala Miami).
ATM, CP3 is, at best, a distant dream for us but that’s still better than NO chance!
Sigh . . . Now I need new AVATAR!
I'm not saying that he couldn't be worth it.
I’m just a little worried about injuries, and how he will play in the system. I don’t really have anything to back it up though…just a gut feeling. I suppose it really depends on who we give up, since it’s a given we would have to take on James Posey’s contract or even Okafors….shudders
Posey's gone. He went to Indiana in the Collison trade.
And Paul? He’s an outstanding pick-and-roll, draw-and-kick player who’d be coming into the league’s heaviest pick-and-roll offense. He’d be fine.
So if this did happen...
…which it won’t…
…but if it did happen, we’d probably have to take Okafor.
Who, last I looked, averaged almost a double-double in 28.9 MPG last year, and is an excellent post defender.
He’s overpaid, and he doesn’t fit brilliantly into the Magic’s system. (He’d excel at the role Gortat plays now, but even Gortat is overpaid for that task.) But it’s not like he’s a bad player or anything.
Basketball trivia time! The Orlando Magic used 12 players during the 2009-10 season. How many of them posted an eFG% lower than Carmelo Anthony?
Gortat is overpaid in the same way insurance is too expensive.
Unless something bad happens, you don’t file insurance claims, but when something does happen you are very glad you have it. If Dwight goes down for any lenth of time, we can continue the same offensive scheme with some drop off, but we remain a top tier team because Gortat is an excellent defender in our system. With a lessor talent who would likely be immobile we would be in a heap of trouble and have to try to trade for Gortat.

Oh, I know.
Trust me, I’ve made this argument before to people who were talking about trading Gortat without getting a center in return — for 12-15 minutes of the game, and if Dwight ever has to miss any time, we need a great defender and rebounder in there, because so much of the Magic’s defense rests on their center.
My point was that, while it would be difficult to replace him, Okafor would definitely be able to do so. (Though at a cost of $10 million a year, which is… not ideal.)
Unless, of course, it takes playing time away from Ryan Anderson.
My concern with trade #2 is Billups
I am not a giant fan of Jameer, but at some point, PGs tend to lose that quick first step, and then it is game over.
I would worry about Chauncey being able to hang with other guards in the next few years. Granted, Dwight is a safety-net from a defensive perspective, and there is the chance that he reinvents his game (ala Jason Kidd) from an offensive perspective, but I think that we are nearing the end of the Chauncey Billups ride. Which is a shame, because he seems like a classy guy.
But, like most of the other posters, I doubt this happens. Maybe we’d get CP3 because he sacrifices to win a championship, but ‘Melo doesn’t seem to me to be the most altruistic of cats, if you know what I mean. He’ll go to the Knicks; they’ll keep getting knocked out of the Eastern conference finals or semi-finals; and the basketball world will maintain its sense of order (sad as it is).
don't worry

As a Lakers fan i actually felt bad in 2008 when the Lakers lost in the NBA finals to Boston. I couldn’t believe it really, it is just a game, why in the world would it actually get me feeling down just cause “my team” [which i have no relation at all to and gain/losing nothing from] lost? It was the first time i’ve every actually felt down due to sports (and i live in Seattle and was forced to watch the Seahawks get cheated out of a Super Bowl!).
However, believe me when i tell you that the loss made the 2 back to back titles feel that much nicer. It was great. So as a magic fan, you should be thanking all these “heart aches” because they make the championships that much sweeter (assuming they come, lol).
BTW
your trade scenerio #2 is absolutely absurd. It makes no sense except if the goal of the Denver Nuggets is to make sure they get cheated. They give over their 3 BEST PLAYERS (this is a team which was in the Western Conference Finals, and I believe perhaps the 2nd or 3rd best team in the leage, in 2009!) for what? A huge negative in Rashard’s massive and ridiculous contract? Rashard Lewis + his contract, is NOT an asset. He is a huge, massive, gigantic liability/negative weight. Meaning that teams would not take him for FREE. If this was legal by NBA rules, I highly doubt any team would take Rashard + $25m in cash. So why would they give their 3 best players, all being paid LESS than they are worth, for something which not only has zero value but has massive negative value? It makes no sense. I understand that there are 3 other players in the trade, but they make no difference. The only player with any real value is Jameer, and obviously it doesn’t come close to getting 3 all star caliber players, including an elite player in Melo.
