When will he just go away?

Is it just me or is Shaquille O'Neal going to forever be a pest to Magic fans?  Now that it looks like he is going to Boston, it is yet another example of this guy being against us than neutral to us.  Joining the Lakers spoke for itself.  Then he goes to Miami (our in state rivals) and wins a championship.  Phoenix was blah, but he still started that whole master of panic/beef with Dwight fiasco.  So even as a Sun he found a way to stir the pot.  Then he joins Cleveland because we beat them in the Conference Finals the year before and that didn't sit well with him obviously. Now he joins the one team that we couldn't hang with due primarily to size.  I don't know about you guys, but I like our chances in a 7 game series against the Heat better than I do against Boston.  Why couldnt he just sign with Atlanta where he would be a complete non-factor against us and we'd finally get the upper hand on him.  To make matters worse, the guy freaking lives Orlando, a city he called a dried up pond!!  I'm quite honestly so sick of this guy and wish he could just retire and go away for good.  What are your thoughts?  Is this guy just destined to forever haunt us?

Bah, the last 2 teams to try this Rent-a-Shaq approach didn't do all that well.

And if you think about it, it makes perfect sense that the oldest player in the NBA goes to play for the Celtics.

Who even cares?

Shaq is awful now. If the Celtics want to waste playing time on him rather than, say, Perkins, that’s great news for everyone but the Celtics.

I call him LeBron Jim for short.

Whether we like it or not Shaq can still defend Dwight one on one

We didnt play Cleveland in the playoffs so there is no telling if they would have been successful against us. If I’m a GM in the East and consider myself a contender then I’m going to pick up one of the 3 guys in the league that can defend Dwight. I dont like this for my Magic at all. If we somehow get by Miami’s starpower then we have to go through Boston’s size. The road just got harder

I probably know Judo! How many of you can make the same boast?

by Souwantmyname on Aug 4, 2010 1:39 PM EDT reply actions

Or

Boston beat the crap out of Miami for us.

No point worrying about the playoffs before pre-season’s even started.

by eltharion_doa on Aug 4, 2010 3:04 PM EDT up reply actions

For this scenario to happen we need to finish 1, 2, 3 in the East with Miami either being 2 (if we’re 1 and vice versa) or 1 (if we’re 3)…right?

Or

Boston get a few injuries again and only make 4th in the East, with Miami winning. Which would send us back to Atlanta again (hope not) or Chicago (who I rather like, and I think would give us a good warmup).

Hence my point about not getting too far ahead of ourselves. Long season.

Guard D12 one on one?

Can not, and did not!!! Shaq’s glory days are (big)behind him now! just ignore him, and he’ll simply FADE AWAY. GO MAGIC!!!!!!!!

by Micheal B on Aug 10, 2010 1:51 PM EDT up reply actions

I know Shaq is pretty irrelevant now-a-days BUT . . .

If there’s ONE thing he’s still good at is being HUGE and making life in the paint difficult for Dwight.

So to answer the question, YES, it irritates me that he went to the C’s. Now the best anti-Dwight defense just got a little bit stronger…

It feels like all he’s done since the past few years is try to impede the Magic from winning by selling his services as a “Dwight-stopper” which why I was really hoping he’d end up in Dallas or out west somewhere so he’d be completely irrelevant.

I will be the 1st to say GOOD RIDDANCE once his FAT @ss FINALLY retires and becomes permanently irrelevant!

Sigh . . . Now I need new AVATAR!

by blue-blood on Aug 4, 2010 4:56 PM EDT reply actions

Those are my thoughts exactly. Its like all he wants to do now is mess with the Magic and prevent them from winning. Hence, why I want him to go away…he’s done enough damage to this franchise.

The guy has proven himself to be a classless vindictive d*ck

And this is just another example. Unfortunately he can still “get it up” so to speak, to defend Dwight.

by Ajax2771 on Aug 4, 2010 5:37 PM EDT reply actions

Eh.

I’d say Varejao was more of a factor against Dwight last season… not that Varejao could defend Dwight single-handedly, but the one thing Dwight has always had trouble with is a strong/large big man combined with a defensive PF who can hassle him into mistakes but is smart enough to be able to keep one eye on Lewis (or whoever). Ben and Rasheed Wallace. Perkins and Garnett. Shaq and Varejao. The latter is at least as important.

I call him LeBron Jim for short.

Only reason I prefer that Shaq still plays is that it delays him from becoming a commentator.

On the other hand when Shaq will start talking about the games numerous Magic fans (and all kind of NBA fans) will get an absolute delight-zen-relaxing feeling by pressing the mute button on their remotes everytime he speaks.

Don't mind my spelling. I'm a Typo Master.

Not cool to wish for injuries

I am NOT a lebron fan by any stretch (can’t stand the guy) but I don’t want to see anyone injured.

I wouldnt mind seeing KB8 get seriously injured. I mean he’s caught so many breaks in his career, a catastrophic injury would be par for the course…

I concern more about the other ONeal on the Celtics.

Jermaine played Dwight extremely well last season.

I don't believe Shaq is a factor against the Magic anymore but...

I just wish he went away so we won’t have to hear him take shots at the organization, SVG, and Dwight every chance he gets. He’s alright as an entertainer but as a basketball player, he’s done!

I hadn't thought about it this way...

but, imagine for a minute you are a Lakers fan (shudders), what it must be like to watch one of the all-time greatest Laker go to play with the Celtics. Likewise, it must be hard to swallow the pride for a Celtics fan and accept that a Lakers icon is now playing for Boston.

I dont think something like this ever happened before. Magic playing in a green uniform? Russell in L.A.? Nope.

It must be said that Shaq has only been loyal to himself and no one else.

i dont think lakers fans still think of him as a laker, it has been 6 years since he was on their team.

what could wind up being incredibly awkward is if his number is never retired anywhere. i would think the most likely place is LA, but you can guarantee that isnt going to happen as long as Kobe is still playing there.

by MagicMark on Aug 6, 2010 2:57 PM EDT up reply actions

yeah he’ll most likely get his number retired in LA. it will take a lot of Buss-kissing to get it done. kobe is one thing which their dislike for eachother has no bearing on Shaq’s stats when he was in LA…but Shaq’s scorch-earth mentality with Lakers management and Jerry Buss at the end of his Lakers tenure will be a sticking point.

Shaq's a nobody

Team wise. He’s not a storied player with any franchise, because he’s stabbed every single team he’s played with in the back and ruined his legacy. I’d be surprised if anyone ever retires his jersey. He might be the greatest mercenary of all time, though, and the best player in the history of the league not to have his jersey retired anywhere.

Didnt the Magic, for a brief time, prohibit anyone from wearing 32

because they were considering retiring his number. I dont know if that was just a rumor or they actually considered it.

by Ajax2771 on Aug 9, 2010 5:37 PM EDT up reply actions

Yeah, but when Jeremy Richardson asks for a certain number, you don't say no

Not unless you want fan backlash.

that would actually be great…you gotta imagine deep down inside in Shaq’s arrogant mind, he thinks he will one day have his jersey retired in Orlando

How about I'm just over it at this point?

And I was over it by the time he made it to the Heat. This is the NBA. Players move around. It’s just the way it is. He’s been a lot better to the city of Orlando overall than a number of other prominent players who have left.
