Orlando Magic News for August 31st: Another Carmelo Anthony Trade Scenario, D-League Musings, and More
- SLAM ONLINE | Trader’s Market: Melo Pt. 2 - Southern Hospitality
Sandy Dover says the Orlando Magic are contenders to land Denver Nuggets All-Star Carmelo Anthony via trade because they can offer salary relief (Vince Carter's partially expiring contract) and solid talent (Mickael Pietrus, whom Dover calls the "real treat" for Denver in the deal). He believes pairing Anthony with Dwight Howard, Jameer Nelson, and Rashard Lewis could help the Magic "go to the NBA Finals."

Four well-respected experts agree: the Magic earn an F for their non-use of the NBA's D-League so far. Eddy Rivera points out that the Magic don't have much need for the D-League, since they're a contending team, but Matt Hubert counters with this bit:
Sure, they’ve been successful on the court the past few seasons, but that doesn’t tell the whole story. Other top teams like the Lakers, Celtics and Spurs have made much better use of the D-League as a developmental tool than Orlando.

Josh Robbins of the Orlando Sentinel passes along word that Howard will support earthquake relief for Haiti in a variety of ways.

Not gonna lie
Saw Orlando Magic and Carmello Anthony trade… got excited. Now I feel slow. =(
``There’s no need to quit. There’s no need to say that we’re going down fighting because we’re not going down. You just have to think positive and if you think negative you are going to lose. Like I told the guys in the locker room, `If anybody has any doubt, we’re not going to win. But if everybody’s on the same page and believes we’re going to win, then we’re going to win it.’’’ -Dwight Howard

Definitely disagree with being so critical of our lack of D-League use.
We have more depth 1-12 than all of the contenders in the NBA. We just haven’t had the most opportunity- we rail NoNeck and JWill for not playing up to our standards, but they still got playing time when they were needed and performed admirably.
The argument is that the Magic should look to the D-League for end-of-bench types, instead of calling on veteran retreads.
Their trading for Ty Lue when Jameer Nelson went down in 2009 is probably the biggest example of Smith’s preference for proven, veteran talent.
I do think they should at least send Daniel Orton or Stanley Robinson down for a few games this year, just to make sure they play. Goodness knows they aren’t going to get meaningful minutes with the big-league club.

And yeah, there's also the consideration that the young guys need to be around the Magic's coaches and players to learn the system and develop chemistry. I get that.
But I think the need to play trumps all those concerns.

I'm assuming Orton is likely to be the 13th man
So if the team were ever to be leading by 20-30 points in the final quarter, he won’t be able to get even garbage minutes (unless someone is injured, activating one of our rookies).
I can't see Denver taking Peaches and Carter
For Anthony and Afflalo. Even with 2011 and 2013 draft picks (which will almost certainly be garbage) and max cash, it makes little sense. I have absolutely no doubt the Nuggets can get better than that, and would only settle for that if Anthony told all other teams trying to trade for him that he won’t extend with them.
Maybe
Isnt MP in the last year of his contract.
trade idea
A trade with Denver, Orlando, and Dallas:
Orlando receives:
Billups
Melo
JR
Birdman
Denver receives:
Nelson
VC
Butler
Gortat
Draft picks
Dallas receives:
Bass
Peitrus
Balkman
Orlando gets the talent to maybe put them over the top for the next couple years. At least give them a fighting chance against Miami.
Denver gets Butler to replace Melo, a younger PG to pair with Ty Lawson, a C that can let Nene play PF again, and VC to make up for JR’s points. Denver would get some picks (albeit not as great as some other teams picks). Denver would get cap relief after this year between VC, Butler, Martin, A. Carter, and S. Williams for a total of $42 mil off the books next year. That would clear way for the team to add quality pieces at a much lower cost considering the new CBA will most likely lower the salary of the players which would help Denver to afford talent at a discounted price than this year. (Now, I’m spectulating on that because I am not exactly sure on the new rules in the CBA agreement, but I know that it is suppose to favor the owners).
Dallas gets Bass back, as well as Peitrus to back up Marion, and Balkman who Denver has had trouble putting on the court for some reason. Dallas seems to do well with role players and would probably be able to use Balkman effectively.
Sound feasible?
