SBJ: Orlando Magic Will Face Miami Heat in Amway Center Opener

The NBA will host an hourlong TV special to announce the marquee games on its 2010/11 schedule tomorrow night, but the Sports Business Journal reports that we can already count on one game taking place on opening night: the Orlando Magic will host the Miami Heat on October 28th in their new building, the Amway Center.

Andrew Sharp of SBNation.com responds:

More important than opening Amway, though, it'll be the tip-off of the 2010-11 NBA season, starting things with a rivalry game that fans have been anticipating since the moment LeBron James announced plans to join the Miami Heat. The gauntlet has been thrown down in the state of Florida, and it's up to the Magic to answer the call.

We knew the Magic would indeed have a call to answer since James' The Decision special. Now, we know when, exactly, the Magic can take on their rivals.

See, I disagree with this

I never understand why we HAVE to always support our team. Why would anyone support the Timberwolves year after year? It seems the only reason to be loyal is because everyone expects you to be. If it’s not fun to watch your team make terrible decisions and play awful every year, then watch another team.

It’s such a pervasive notion, but I just don’t get it. Why put yourself through the torment if you don’t have to? I’ve been a Magic fan since ‘92, but I’m not afraid to say I lost a little bit of interest when they started 1-19.

Its not about the team, its about the town (or region).

Ive been a Buc fan since 1978. 10 plus years of 10 plus losses made their Super Bowl win all the sweeter. I dont like the Magic or the Bucs because of any individual or how successful or unsuccessful they are. I like them because I was born in Orlando and have lived most of my life in Central Florida. They are my home town teams and I will stick with them no matter what.

It really depends on what kind of negativity

Im a huge critic of the Magic and Ive taken alot of, pardon the pun, heat for it. Ive been mistaken for a troll and called all kinds of names for not agreeing with everything our overlord Otis Smith does. My criticism comes from a desire to see the team succeed. I think its fairly easy to seperate the troll from the critical fan.

I deliberately used the word trash to distinguish the needless crap from the spirited discourse. You have opinions I disaggree with and opinions I agree with. You don’t make meaningless posts like those we have been subjected to recently. “DUH” is likely a fan, but likely should consider changing his moniker to something less subject to ridicule and misinterpretation.

That being said, I am going to prepare my world famous meatloaf. Everyone is welcome to join me in about an hour and a half. BYOB.

you are wrong about that

I don’t really think that the Heat have a good chance against the Magic next year. What happened to all the homerism on this board? I remember after the Lakers vs the Magic finals when i first came on this website, there were homers everywhere, just counting down the seconds to multiple championships. And now it is pessimism, pessimism and more pessimism.

And against what? Not a 2 time defending champion and 3 time back to back to back NBA finalist like the Lakers, but a brand new team like the Heat who are perhaps the most unbalanced team in NBA history. Such strengths in exactly the same place, Lebron/Wade, extremely redundant. But absolute weakness everywhere else, yes, even on the front line with Bosh. Bosh is like 6’11" and 150lbs, how is this guy going to hold up the inside by himself or with d-leagers?

Everyone’s overestimating the Heat.

I'm happy

Although I find it odd that they’d schedule it this way. The first regular season game will be a hot sell regardless of opponent. Why not schedule Memphis for opening night and play the Heat at a later date? I’m assuming the NBA schedules games with the mindset of bringing in as much revenue as possible. Why put so many eggs in one basket?

Outside of business, I love it. Shut these guys up early

the NBA is not worried about 17k fans

at the stadium. The NBA is attempting to build momentum for the NBA season and get millions to watch on TV. The more you get to watch at the beginning, new viewers, old viewers who don’t watch NBA anymore, etc., the more momentum you build and the most viewers you gain.

They’ve got other things in mind than getting fans to come out to the stadium.

by plyka on Aug 2, 2010 4:17 PM EDT up reply actions

I disagree

I think total revenue for owners is the ultimate goal, everything in the NBA reflects that. Ticket sales may not be as beneficial as tv revenue, but it is still a major factor. I don’t think this is a smart business decision by the league office.

One Freaken Second

by magic fanatic on Aug 2, 2010 9:03 PM EDT up reply actions

profits are

Profits for the owners are the ultimate goal. And believe me, the way to profits is not to set up a crappy game as the season opener. It is to set up something EVERYONE will want to watch. This builds momentum for the coming season. If you get more fans to watch from the first game, the tendency for them is to watch more as the season progresses.

And plus, it’s not like we don’t have confirmation. The league has thousands of sales analysts working for them. They have come to the conclusion that you’re wrong. Who is to say if they are right nor not, but they certainly have a higher chance of being right.

I'm not but I moved here in June 1990 and became a fan in October.

I’m among the thousands of “jilted lovers” who suffered the Shaq departure. I also endured the Brian Hill firing reported by Peter Vescey before Hill was actually fired, the Penny thing, the heart and hustle plan, Doc Rivers, and so on. With all that on my docket, I’m hopelessly optimistic about where we are today.

Shaq should have been the best thing that ever happened to this franchise, and turned out to be the worst for about a decade. Howard, to this point, IS the best thing to happen to this franchise.

The reason it’s good to be a Magic fan today is because our franchise is trying to win it all. No team is going to do it all every year, but if they are TRYING to win it all every year, you are in a good place.

I helped name the team...kinda

I was one of about 4000 people that sent in suggested names for the franchise before Orlando was awarded a team. I wanted the Panthers (this was 87, way before the hockey team). I recall reading about Pat Williams efforts to bring a team here. I was a fan from that moment on. To think, we were almost the Orlando Juice, the Orlando Heat or the Orlando Tropics. LETS GET TROPICAL!! I would rather have had any of those names than the Magic. Anything to distance ourselves from Disney. Then I hear our mascot will be a dragon….cool, Im thinking something like Smaug the dragon from the hobbit. Instead, we end up with his fat, gay (not that theres anything wrong with that) green cousin STUFF. ARRRGGHHHH!!! Love my team, hate the name.

Not the longest, but

I’ve been a fan since somewhere between 1990-‘92. I can’t remember exactly because I was only 4-6 at the time, but I remember I already had a basketball hoop but strangely didn’t know we had a basketball team in Orlando until my dad told me. After that I was enthralled and became completely obsessed with them. We didn’t even have a TV so I used to listen to all their broadcasts on the radio for years. I remember one time when we were losing to the Wesley Person Cavs by over 40 and I was so upset I cried. I still have some legitimately vintage paraphernalia but sadly a lot got lost through time. I miss some of my shirts from back when it was cool to mix Orlando Magic players with Tiny Toons character designs. I also remember the first game I ever went to was the one where we were losing by 1 with 3.something seconds left to the 76ers, but Darrell Armstrong stole the ball and won us the game. All these unique memories have ensured I remain a life long fan.

BRING IT!

That is going to be a ridiculous night… can you imagine the noise in there?!?!

On a more serious note, why would we lose badly in this game? If anything, this would be one of the better chances for Orlando to win against the Heat. Besides home court advantage, with a ridiculously loud and energetic crowd for the opening night of our new building, the Magic will be playing with a championship caliber roster that has virtually gone unchanged since last year, with the core group of players having been together for years. Same players, same coach, same system. By contrast, Miami won’t have even had a chance to work out the kinks yet.

Go Magic.

by CaptWes213 on Aug 2, 2010 2:26 PM EDT reply actions

Yeah, that was my first thought.

Not that I’m underestimating the Heat — simply put, nobody knows how good they’ll be. But there’s a good chance they won’t reach their full strength by October. It took the Magic half a season to really start running last year, and they didn’t make half the changes the Heat did.

I like the idea of opening against the Heat.

We have continuity on our side and I think that benefits us on opening night. On the other hand, at that point we won’t have a whole lot of data on how they plan to run their offense and defense except for preseason. Since they are a completely new team it might catch us off guard.

Bosh will have 20-14, LBJ will have 40-12-11, collapsing the new arena in the process and forcing the remaining home games to be played in UCF’s gym, while also getting tender with my girlfriend after the game. Pretty much how this year is going sports wise

Im not dillusional about what the Magic and the rest of the NBA face this coming season. But, the Heat have alot of pressure on them. If they dont come out of the gate 29 and 1 they will be regarded as struggling. If they dont win a championship the first year, they will be regarded as a an outright failure. The pressure is on and so far Lebron has not responded well to pressure.

I can see Lebron’s name living on through several basketball generations, but Bosh would probably be regulated off into obscurity within 10 years after he retires. Sorta like Tom Chambers and probably Shawn Kemp.

Because as of today, the Magic players know they are opening the new arena against the Super-Friends. I think it will light a spark for them in the pre-season and they will come out hot.
