Orlando Magic Free-Agency Rumors, Day Seven: Al Harrington's Name Surfaces

Two reports linking the Orlando Magic and free agent big man Al Harrington emerged yesterday. To my knowledge, Chris Mannix of Sports Illustrated was the first media member to connect the Magic with Harrington, a high-usage, low-efficiency, shoot-first veteran:

SI sources say Al Harrington was in serious talks with Orlando that recently fell apart. Harrington looking at Utah, New Jersey and Clips.

Hours later, FanHouse's Chris Tomasson sent this Twitter message indicating that a deal might still be in the works:

There are still talks going on with Orlando about possible sign and trade being arranged & New York free agent Al Harrington going to Magic

Despite the negative reputation Harrington has as an unapologetic gunner, I understand the appeal, insofar as Harrington can score, and the Magic need shot-creators off their bench. At the same time, he's not appreciably better than incumbent backup power forward Ryan Anderson at anything, really, and the Magic's biggest need is to find a low-usage, defense-oriented perimeter player.

please no as well

al harrington may be able to hit a few three’s and that is a big maybe,
i just dont see him as a disciplined basketball player, and stan van gundy runs his teams with discipline.
Orlando shoots a lot of threes but they also play great defense, and after watching the horrid defense Harrington played in New York, I dont like this idea, especially after the Miami Trio have decided to join forces. Harrignton is not someone Orlando needs.

i liked his game when he was with the Pacers, he was a useful 2nd or 3rd option.

But another undersized power forward?

I wonder how serious was serious…was Otis prepared to accomodate him in order to cut Bass?

Surely if they were considering Harrington...

…they’d be considering moving him to small forward? I don’t know what he played in New York, but last I checked, Harrington was a natural SF. (Of course, he may have lost too much speed to do that, like Shard. I can’t disprrove that.)

I call him LeBron Jim for short.

by 3.3seconds on Jul 9, 2010 4:09 AM EDT reply actions

i clearly remember his Pacer days, and he was the SF, or the backup

he was traded to the Hawks in exchange of Stephen Jackson. But yeah the term stretch 4 would loosely extend to him

by RL Magic on Jul 9, 2010 5:55 AM EDT up reply actions

Yeah, if he was a 4, he would definitely be a 4 of the stretch variety.

Not that we need another one of those… mind you, I’m behind the 4-1 100%, but Lewis and Anderson are enough to execute it. They don’t need a third guy with less skill than Lewis and less potential than Anderson.

I call him LeBron Jim for short.

OT: Since I had to wait to 4am to find out what would go down

I went to sleep knowing that I would wake up to LBJ’s desciscion, so I had this funny dream that he went to Portland. I don’t know how this came up but it was very realistic and I was thrilled that we got rid of him and he went to the West. Who said dreams come true? I wake up to a superteam in f@kin’ Miami.

NO Otis NO

NO NO NO This would not put us closer to winning the east and getting back to the finals. I sure hope this is just rumor and not close to being true. If true, how does a guy like Matt Barnes feel? $3.5M for a backup point guard (Duhon) and now chasing a guy like Harrington. While at the same time the Magic are taking a wait and see approach on Barnes, and according to Barnes’ Twitter, have not put an offer on the table for him. This is a guy that earned his starting spot, plays great D, had great hustle (almost always one of the first ones up the floor), and brings the attitude we need. Gotta feel a little disrespected. And I’m not saying this as a UCLA alum for another UCLA guy. I’m saying this as a Magic fan. I feel Barnes is needed more now for his attitude and D with the recent Miami news. As Eddie posted on his site (http://www.magicbasketball.net/) we don’t match up very well with the current roster. I see Barnes being an asset we should be pursuing – way before Al Harrington.

by UCLA_Alum on Jul 9, 2010 10:01 AM EDT reply actions

The Magic could only offer Barnes $2.4 mill or about 7.8 mil over 3 years.

Barnes is looking for $10 mil over 3 years. If Otis had the cap room he would go after Barnes, but now all he can do is hop Matt gets no good offers.

Well he wouldn’t join the Magic to compete against his boys like that. I wouldn’t be surprised if Dwight and CP3 are concoting a plan to “take their talents to South Beach” right now. The new generation of the NBA is so buddy buddy right now it is kind of pathetic. Though they take paycuts for winning they also have no competitive edge…its all about popping bottles and cabanas at the W. Everybody’s happy everybody’s lovely. So yes I really believe CP3 wouldnt screw over the brotherhood.

I hate Kobe and the Lakers as much as you do but...

if they play the Heat in the Finals, I hope the Lakers beat the living hell out of the Heat. Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh are likable players but adding LeBron to the equation now makes the Heat my most hated team. Not to mention, Pat Riley is a hack too. He ran SVG out of town to steal his glory and if he does the same to Erik Spoelstra, then that’s the final nail in his coffin of douchebaginess. As much as it pains me to say it, I’d rather see Kobe win more rings than MJ than to see LeBron even win one. You bet your ass Kobe will be working his ass off to take down the 2-headed monster at the wing positions for the Heat!

Yeah I relish seeing the Magic beat up on that hack LeBron even more now (sorry Wade and Bosh, nothing personal against you). A Lakers/Heat Finals would be my worst nightmare. It would be the two teams that epitomize everything that is wrong with the NBA. So the Magic better whoop that Heat ass next year. KB8 pisses me off as everyone keeps pointing out, he ain’t MJ either, but he had the balls to kick Shaq out of town (note that later on he realized how hard it is to do it on your own, and needed a sidekick) so at least he didn’t take his talents to wherever like LeFraud James. Gotta give Mr. KB8 that respect (hence the Mr.).

My God! Al Harrington?!?!?!!??!?!

they need to get CP3 right now!! somehow someway!! Vs Boston we didnt have ONE guy that needed to be double teamed and even otherwise its only Dwight! We need to get better defensively on the floor too according to me cuz it cant be simply rely on howard to cover up with wade and james driving to the hoop to whole game, he’s gonna have 48 fouls. As of right now, VC would have to cover Wade!! Unless you want him guarding Lebron and switch peaches on Wade. I dont even know if Rashard is good enough to say that he and Bosh cancel eachother out…our only advantages will be on C and PG, and lebron at SF as of the current roster wouldnt even be guarding ANYONE on defense vs Magic, neither would Wade(VC), Obviously this is not 2008-2009 or 2009-2010 anymore…we need a difference maker. Does nobody want Carter that much???

You have to consider the fit

Hedo fit our team about as well as any player could fit any team. We would’ve had much better matchups with Hedo over VC but a 5 year deal was out of the question so we did the right thing by letting Hedo walk. The worst part is that we got screwed and now Hedo wants out of Toronto anyway. If he stayed with Orlando we would’ve probably been back to the Finals largely due to the Boston matchups. Would’ve been CLee/J.J. on Allen and Hedo/MP on Pierce instead of Carter/J.J. and Barnes/MP. Given that VC didn’t provide much offense in the Boston series and his defense was so bad that SVG had to put Barnes on Allen, we would’ve been better off with CLee’s caliber of defense and his limited shot taking. None of it matters now but what the VC signing showed us in the post season is that he needs to be the 4th option on offense this coming season with Rashard being the #2-#3 option.

The last magic was offer to him was 4 yrs 36 million

cant blame him tho 15-16 mil is alot of money for a guy who was on a 6mil/year deal before that and rookie contract before that…Barnes wants approx 10mil/3year and i was reading somewhere the magic can probably do 3yr/8mil…he will walk for 2 million..imagine 15-16

by rahido on Jul 9, 2010 5:15 PM EDT up reply actions

I did

I’m from Montreal we get 82 televised raptors games each year. I know turk sucked no doubt and ppl from toronto were sure VC wouldnt deliver and I would laugh and brag on how VC is delivering and Turk is doing nothing. Then you had the other VC show up in the playoffs… I honestly believe if we had Turk in the playoffs, despite his horrible season he would contribute more to the magic and we would have had a better shot, a much better shot with Turk. For all the bad in him like the contract, the pizzas, the quitting in T.O., the out of control wild arms flaying in the air drives with the magic…He stepped it up in the playoffs in 09 and when motivated like he was with the magic with gundy, he’s a dynamic player…VC just slumped hard and I dont think he played AS BAD for the amount of blame i place on him as his natural (maybe not to his fault) I-dont-care body language..but he sure did suck
