Why Lebron Signing with the Heat helps Orlando

When I heard Lebron signed with Miami, I was pretty relieved because, as he stated, 3 players cannot win a ring by themselves.  The Heat can only attract old veterans looking to win now (i.e. J Will, Kurt Thomas, etc.) The only team I was afraid Lebron going to was the Chicago Bulls (and maybe the Clipps).

With that said, now Orlando looks very attractive for a star player to come to via a trade.  Lets face it, Chris Paul now realizes he probably won't win a ring with NO, and Orlando now looks like the most attractive place to compete for a ring.  This article sums up my thoughts:

So THANK YOU Lebron for unknowingly helping out the Magic!

Yup

And what other team has better pieces to offer than the Magic? Gortat could be a center on any other team almost (and a reasonable contract given this year’s marketplace), Bass is very attractive, and Ryan Anderson too.

Plus Vince Carter’s expiring contract is very attractive…we have the talent to do a trade with another team

One thing that came to mind was that this opens the door for Dwight howard to win the mvp next season since lebron’s number will go down as well as wade’s

I'm glad someone is finding a silver lining in all this...

Cuz I’m drowning my sorrows in alcohol right now. I’m a Heat fan (born in Miami, raised in central FL) but I’m a Magic fan, and Lebron hater, first. I don’t want him to win before us.

have some faith

dwight howard can be a more dominating player than lebron once he hits his fts and learns a couple more post moves..plus we have 3 current/former all stars, and a deeper bench.. until Miami adds a decent Center and PG, I’d say we are still better than them

I respectfully disagree

In no way does this “help” Orlando. They can still sign a good player w/the mid-level exception. Then minimum vet guys. I see Derek Fisher signing with them as their backup. When you have LeBron, Wade, and Bosh; you don’t need much else.

I feel horrible for Cleveland. When Shaq left, I hated him for it but understood why: more money and the LA lifestyle. But a local guy to leave to a team that would still be a good team next year for less money, it just sucks.

Thanks Vince.

they dont have the mid level this year

by doublettoluca on Jul 8, 2010 10:49 PM EDT up reply actions

No, they can't

You don’t get the MLE if you’re under the cap by more than the value of it.

They’re down to whatever cap space they have left and minimum contracts. That’s it.

The Indians are in rebuilding mode, the Browns are a mediocre team, and now the Cavs will be also-rans for years to come.

I don’t blame Cavaliers’ fans for being angry with James.

I've never advocated major changes, but we need one if we're gonna be the unholy trio of Bosh, Wade and Lebron

yeah, occasionally we might be them, or even the lucky playoff series, but this is now a team that will win +55 games at least every season.

It’s not like they can’t get good role players, they will.

Shaq didn't just burn the bridge when he left Miami, he nuked the next hundred miles of real estate.

To really expext him to contribute again after an injury and nearing the age of 40 is hilarious.

by MagicMark on Jul 8, 2010 11:08 PM EDT up reply actions

Still had PER of nearly 18 last season

He’s not a star by any means, but he’s still a capable contributor for 20 minutes a night.

by eltharion_doa on Jul 8, 2010 11:44 PM EDT up reply actions

Exactly!

This is nothing like when Boston Signed Garnet and Allen. Boston still had a serviceable team surrounding them. Miami is capped out with only 5 players on the roster. Bosh is a good PF, but his numbers were inflated because he was "it" on that Toronto team and all three can’t play 40 plus minutes every single night. When Miami places there soon to be D-League Bench into the game, any lead/momentum will be lost quickly. I can see Miami winning its fare share of games next season, But Injuries, Fatigue, and a lack of a supporting cast will be too much to overcome for them come playoff time imo. Oh…and they still don’t have an answer for Dwight.

Where are they going to get that other 30-50 points?

by redandblue on Jul 9, 2010 11:22 AM EDT up reply actions

James – 30
Wade – 25
Bosh – 20

They could have the rest of their roster average 3 points each and they’d still drop 105 a game.

by eltharion_doa on Jul 9, 2010 12:19 PM EDT up reply actions

James/Wade combined is going to be low 50s max.

3 people don’t average 75% of the scoring on any team ever. This will not be an exception. There is only one ball on the court.

by MagicMark on Jul 10, 2010 12:09 AM EDT up reply actions

When was the last time a team

Had two of the best five NBA players on the court at the same time?

Even if James and Wade only average say, 55 points and Bosh 15, that’s 70 points a night right there. They only have to get fifteen points combined from the other two starters and have the bench chip in for 15 and that’s 100 points a night. I don’t think that’s in any way an unlikely scenario, either.

by eltharion_doa on Jul 10, 2010 12:34 AM EDT up reply actions

well there's only been one 72 win team.. with good reason.

It's not that extreme

But I would rather understand that Miami just became a huge hurdle than to peddle the idea that they aren’t going to be any good. Some people here are acting like this will be a JV team until next year, and that’s just dumb. This lineup with a nursing home filling out the roster could win 50 games.

There’s always a chance, and I will root for the Magic to win each and every game they play, but I won’t pretend like they are the better team between the two, nor will I act like they can roll right through them.

I already had the flu and I think the news of the “super” team developing in Miami is going to make this illness last a little longer. I’m having anxiety attacks (yes, plural even though its been a matter of an hour and a half since this became public).
Is it possible for us to get something BEFORE the season starts or are we looking at a mid-season trade after we see how we stack up against the Heat? Is Carmelo a real possibility? Can we swing a trade for CP3 or some other Elite PG (sorry Jameer but the stakes just got a whole lot bigger)? What about David Lee? Would David Lee even fit on this team? Or maybe, just maybe the fact that this core group has played together for 3 seasons we’ll have enough chemistry to overcome this ‘super-squad.’ Are there any other ‘pieces’ out there that we can obtain or is it really just Melo, CP3 and Lee?

OK

The clock is about to strike 12 and all we got this year was the subtraction of Barnes, JWill and Dad along with the additions of Orton (who hasn’t looked great in the Summer league) and Duhan.
Now I’m being told that all three Melo, Lee and CP3 are non-options. Whats the move. We got to keep up with the Jones’ or in this case Pat Rielly.

So your saying....

We’re sticking to our guns. We are going to sit here and say VC can play playoff defense, even if we know he cant. We are going to say that the stretch 4 will work against a team that has a long defender in Bosh, even if we know it wont. We are going to trust that D12 wont get into foul trouble with both Dwade and Lebron attacking the rim at will. I just dont see us getting back to the finals with this roster.

I have no idea

But to say we have no flexibility is ludicrous. Lots of tradeable assets such as Bass, Anderson, Gortat, Vince, even Jameer (if we’re trading for CP3 which is a pipe dream).

not when you take into account VC’s contract and what it does to our future moves. Also Anderson didnt do anything in the playoffs. Lee did a better job than VC did in the playoffs when you take into account the defensive side of the court.

VC's contract is done this year.

And Lee wasn’t a factor in half of the Philly series, or any factor against Cleveland and Boston due to his injury. He was alright against LA. Don’t skew things unrealistically.

Losing Courtney Lee & Matt Barnes

is painful now. We’re gonna be stuck with VC having to guard either Wade or LeBron. If VC can’t stay with Wade then we’ll just put J.J. on him so he can get torched, too. Be afraid, be very afraid. LA is the only team equipped to deal with Wade, LeBron & Bosh.

by eltharion_doa on Jul 8, 2010 11:51 PM EDT up reply actions

No, really. You're insane, and here is why:

A. 3 players cannot win a ring by themselves

No, but they certainly can win a ring by having 3 of the best players in the game surrounded by veteran role players who are willing to do whatever it takes to get that much sought after trophy.

2. The Heat can only attract old veterans looking to win now

Yup, and there is nothing about that that makes it any easier. Veteran ring chasers will now line up at Miami’s door to play there, most likely taking less money and adapting to whatever is asked of them, because the situation is that ripe for postseason success.

D. …now Orlando looks very attractive for a star player to come to via a trade.

Orlando has looked attractive for a couple of years now, but just because a player is interested in playing for a different team doesn’t mean their current team is going to acquiesce to their needs because they want them to succeed elsewhere. A team like New Orleans doesn’t make moves to keep Chris Paul and then ship him off because things just got more difficult. If anything, the death grip in him just got tighter.

by The Magic Man on Jul 8, 2010 11:09 PM EDT up reply actions

Fisher is not going to sign for the minimum.

Haslem is unlikely to do that as well. JWill is beyond his productive time as a player as evidenced by the second half and playoffs this year. Not sure which Thomas you are referring to (likely Tim or Kurt).

by MagicMark on Jul 8, 2010 11:13 PM EDT up reply actions

The problem is going to be

that we only have 1 lockdown defender in Pietrus and he can only hope to contain LeBron. That will leve either VC or J.J. on Wade and there is zero chance of either of them slowing down Wade. Then there’s Bosh who has his way with Rashard or will draw Dwight away from the basket so LeBron and Wade can have a lob-fest.

LeBron and Wade are both elite defenders and scorers. Dwight is only an elite defender and there’s a good chance the Wade, LeBron, Bosh combo will be a struggle for Dwight to stay out of foul trouble.

"It can be done, you can just crush somebody"

by Warlando on Jul 8, 2010 11:10 PM EDT up reply actions

Exactly.

As far as starting lineup, they need a serviceable PG and a C who can grab O-Rebs and be in position for lobs. That’s it. I actually think Big Z would be perfect for them in this situation. They still have to put together a bench, but I highly doubt they have trouble doing that. Let alone they can stagger Wade, Bosh and Lebron’s time on the floor. It’s a scary thought, when you get down to the nitty gritty of it.

Chalmers or anyone will guard Jameer

if Jameer is dominating then they’ll put Wade on him. We have a significant advantage at C and a decent advantage at PG. Wade, LeBron & Bosh will have significant advantages on offense and will have Wade or LeBron on VC with the other one guarding MP. It’s a bad matchup for us, even worse than the LA matchup.

Other than LA

name a team with the personnel to stop Wade, LeBron & Bosh? LA can do it with Kobe on Wade, Artest on LeBron and Pau on Bosh but no other team has anywhere near the personell to stop 2 elite scorers like Wade & LeBron.

I fear that the old “funnel everyone to Dwight and let him do all the work” method won’t work against the offensive caliber and speed of Wade & LeBron.

When did I suggest that?

I’m just being realistic here. You saw how Barnes/MP & VC couldn’t defend Pierce or Allen but you think they’re going to miraculously be able to stop Wade and LeBron who are much better & younger.

Dwight & Jameer will be our best chance and of course we can pull off an upset but I’m not going to pretend the Miami move helps the Magic in any way, shape or form.

"It can be done, you can just crush somebody"

by Warlando on Jul 8, 2010 11:33 PM EDT up reply actions

It won't work.

There will have to be adjustments made. Every team is going to need a zone package against them (assuming they can’t lure some deadeye shooter to take the minimum deal). But even if their starting lineup is by far and away the best, they are going to have a garbage bench. They will have to sub guys out at some point, and they can fall behind when that happens.

Also, depth has a huge part to play in regards to injuries. Nothing is set in stone.

slickw143 thinks LeBron James is doing the best thing for LeBron James

I think I just spoke in the 6th person. Anyways, there are two things I feel the Magic and the fans can look at as a possible silver lining in all of this.

First, they don’t have nor will they have anyone to guard Dwight, because there’s no one available on the market who can. That’s what Boston and LA had the last two years that kept us from winning the title. If Dwight gets even better offensively over the off-season, then that’s a huge advantage for us. Second, with the looming CBA, I think there will be at MOST three vets who will take minimum deals to jump on to their ship. This is the last chance for some good role players to get paid. The Heat will have garbage for depth, and who knows how things play out if one of the Ginormous Three gets hurt, or how much they have left at the end of a game after logging 44 minutes each.

Either way, I’m still nervous.

I love LeBron. No really, I love Jameer.

I'd agree with most of that

I can’t wait for Dwight to pull out the Dream Shake (or I think he calls his own version the Milk Shake) on Bosh.

The East has gotten so much tougher.

Obviously Miami has gotten so much better. Also, the Celtics reassembled the Big Three and got Jermaine Oneal. The Bulls are top 4 in the East now with Rose, Boozer, Deng, Noah.

These 3 led the U.S. to defeats against Argentina and Lithuania.

With a much better supporting cast. I know, not the same, but just saying.

That's really different.

They had Dwight in the middle and CP3 running point, with Kobe taking over games when necessary. I know there are some Kobe haters here, but Kobe was the one who looked at the rest of the team and said “Give me the ball”. These guys are such friends, I don’t know who will do that. Maybe Wade does that for a while, but I don’t see LeBron’s pride sitting back and accepting that for so long and I don’t think Wade has the clout or attitude that Kobe has to completely squash it either.

I love LeBron. No really, I love Jameer.

When they had Kobe and Dwight they got gold.

Wade and LeBron only got them bronze. Bosh wasnt part of that failed Dream Team of 2004. My mistake.

Ah wait, you're talking about 2004.

Sorry, when you said defeats against Argentina and Lithuania I thought you meant we beat them. But yeah, that is true. Argentina and Lithuania definitely had less talent than the 2004 team, but they were a better TEAM. That’s what Lakers’ fans, Magic fans, Boston fans, etc. are all hoping that their teams can do.

Hell, we ran up into that last year. We were certainly more talented than Boston at this point, but they were a better team than us.

I love LeBron. No really, I love Jameer.

It will hurt Cleveland’s chances of a quick rebuild. No one is going to want to play there at all now.

It really isn't awesome. He should be a little more professional. He should actually be a lot more professional.

Lebron gave them seven years of amazing service. It isn’t his fault that their team wasn’t ever good enough.

Also, LeBron had everything he asked from the Cavs... he was pretty much running that organization, he held them hostage.

I can’t agree that his supporting cast wasn’t good enough to win a championship.

I really think the "Lebron is the Cavs front office" story is pretty overrated.

And do you honestly think that Mo Williams as your second best player is good enough to win a championship??? His teammates played well when the stakes were low (reg season) but fell apart in the playoffs.

by MagicMark on Jul 8, 2010 11:54 PM EDT up reply actions

I can

His supporting cast wasn’t. That was their own stupid fault though.

Stupid guarantee

Difficult enough to play in Miami with a hangover….and now this, too?

Magic are a benefit of South Beach as well.

Lots of back to back games for opposing teams start in Miami and play in Orlando the second night.

That is going to be a BRUTAL back to back now for everybody. Both Orlando to Miami and Miami to Orlando. I think it happens like 15 times a year for the opposing teams, especially the Western Conference ones where they lump the trips into regional sections.

Gilbert's a jilted lover

He’s given James absolutely everything for 7 years, catered to his every whim, put up with his bullshit, coddled him, surrounded him with syncophants, waited on him hand and foot, then James has nicked off with some bikini model.

He’s bitter.

Miami’s just taking their time to figure all of the numbers to make them be able to sign them all.

by Ol' Uncle Munnerlyn on Jul 9, 2010 2:55 PM EDT up reply actions

MIAMI Lineup

Right now the roster is:

Chalmers
Wade
James
Bosh

Bird Rights: Joel Anthony
2nd round picks: SF-Da’Sean Butler, C-Dexter Pittman, C/PF-Jarvis Varnado
Signing: Mike Miller
Remaining Cap: $3.8M

Looks like:
Chalmers / Fisher (reported conversations)? or JWill?
Wade / Miller
James / Butler
Bosh / Varnado
Anthony / Pittman

Those rookies will get (a) a lot of heat form the big 3 and (b) a lot of coaching from the big 3. Will make a difference by playoffs (remember Boston’s big 3 with Rondo & Perkins). This team is not just the 3 amigos + vet minimum players. Better than that.

I don't think so.

QO is a cap hold. Not a whole lot different in his case than a held roster spot. Check out Sham’s site.

Not true

QO’s have a cap hold. Any player you have the rights to has a cap hold, even if it’s just minimum salary (ie the same as an empty roster spot, which also has a cap hold).

Anthony’s cap hold is a touch over $1m, as that was the QO level. That cap hold is only about $500k more than it would be for a minimum spot, so the Heat had little incentive to renounce Anthony – $500k between the three stars doesn’t really matter.
