Carmelo Anthony to the Magic in 2011?

There is a lot of talk about Carmelo Anthony's unrestricted free agency in 2011. Right now, a lot of the focus is on the Knicks, where Amare Stoudemire is publicly recruiting Carmelo to join him. Though this appears unlikely, due to Denver's unwillingness to trade and continued efforts to extend Anthony's contract, there is a sigificant chance that Carmelo will be free next July, and the Magic could be in a position to sign him.

If Amare Stoudemire in New York is any kind of draw for Carmelo, one would have to think playing with Dwight Howard on a championship caliber Magic team (in a place with no state income tax) would be a far more attractive option.

Discuss.

Not a chance.

It’s nice to dream and all but we’ll still be into the luxury tax by then and the only way we can get him next offseason is via S&T but I don’t know what pieces we can offer that Denver would want. So, very minimal chance of him coming here.

Nah

As GameManager said, we can’t sign him, Denver’s not trading him, and I’m 85% sure he’s signing the 3 year/$65 million extension.

...really?

Is there a site where we can find the specifics on remaining contracts? As far as I know, Vince’s contract essentially expires after this year (I think he’s owed, like, 4mil in 2011) and a couple other guys should be coming off the books.

If you are both correct that we’d be financially unable to sign, I’d like to know what the specifics are.

Team option

The Magic have a team option in 2011 to release Vince Carter, freeing up 18 mil in cap space. Add the end of Rashard Lewis’ contract the following year, and a little contract creativity could make it happen.

Remains to be seen.

I heard on ESPN this morning that he’s considering the move to New York. And, again, I don’t see how playing with Amare is more attractive than playing with Dwight Howard.

I voted no

I don’t think he will be in a Magic jersey next year, but as a Cuse fan, and a Magic fan, I would love for that to happen.

It would be great if he came.

But he’s not leaving Denver.

"Where do you go from here, Dion?" "I go to Toronto."
Spreading that Calgary Flames, Montreal Expos, The U, and Orlando Magic love.

What makes you say that?

Because of all the expiring contracts they have around Melo (Martin, Billups, etc.)? I’m not convinced he is particularly loyal to the Nuggets organization.

CBA + he's loyal to his wallet

no matter how he feels about the Nuggets.

Money

He’ll never get an extension over $20m/season under the next deal, and he knows it. He’s just trying to influence the Nuggets into making a splash over summer before he inks the deal.

The way the cap works

is that teams can’t be over the cap and sign a max player. The signing of a max contract has to still put the team under the cap or the NBA won’t allow the signing. A team can sign non max players and exceed the team cap. Since we’re already well over the cap not even including what will be J.J’s new contract, the only way we’d get ‘Mello is if Denver agrees to a sign-and-trade but they’d only do that if Dwight’s in the deal. Even if both Vince & Rashard’s contract equaled ’Mello’s contract I doubt they’d even trade him to us for both of those guys.

The 2011 & 2012 free agency only has 1 elite max player in ‘Mello so if we let VC’s contract play out and get it off the books for the 2012 season (MP will probabaly pickup his player option for $5.3) . If we don’t replace VC with anyone and RA, Orton & Bass not picking up his player option for 2013 we will be just under $58 million… before we add whatever J.J’s new contract is. The 2013 free agency is the one with CP3 but we’ll be over the cap (Notice the theme here). The only thing we could do to free up enough money for CP3 is to trade Gortat & ’Meer next season for expiring contracts that will come off the books in 2013 and that will put us at about $50 million assuming J.J. is making $7 million in 2013. Then CP3 would have to sign for $8.0 per season, which will never happen.

Basically VC is worth a lot more to us in a trade than he will be as an expiring contract because we won’t have the cap space to replace him with anyone good when he comes off the books. The downside to that is that we likely wont get a better player than VC through any trade (even in a multi-player trade VC will probably be the best single player from either team). No team will trade for Rashard so in the 2013 season when he’s making $23.8 on the bench when we could’ve had CP3 for $16.0 and another player for $7.8 it will be a deflating feeling. If Dwight signs another long deal with us though then all hope is easily restored since he’s one of the few NBA players who can carry an entire team.

The Denver Post:

Nuggets all-star Carmelo Anthony is expected to take Denver’s three-year, $65 million extension offer, an NBA source said, but Anthony doesn’t have a timetable as he prepares for his wedding Saturday and waits to see how the Nuggets bolster their beleaguered frontcourt.
