Povtak: Orlando Magic Will Keep J.J. Redick, Officially Announce Decision Tomorrow
Tim Povtak of NBA FanHouse reports the Orlando Magic will keep J.J. Redick by matching the Chicago Bulls' offer sheet for him. The team advised the media earlier this afternoon that GM Otis Smith will be available tomorrow morning, implicitly to discuss the decision.
While Brian Schmitz and Sam Smith have previously reported they believe the Magic will match, Povtak is the first to cite any sources:
The Magic will make their intention known Friday – the last possible day -- but NBA sources familiar with the front-office thinking of the Magic confirmed their decision Thursday afternoon.
"They aren't letting go of J.J.,'' said the source.
UPDATE: Schmitz has filed a new report, also saying the Magic will match:
Those close to the negotiations told the Sentinel on Thursday that the Magic will match the 3-year, $19-million offer sheet presented to Redick by the Chicago Bulls.

epitome of the 6th man..........manu ginobli "type" impact player
i am so glad we hung on to jj…..i have always had high hopes for the guy
Just one man's opinion...

"mark my words...we will draft 4 new linebackers this off-season" - 2010
hhahahahahaha
ginobili is an all star, redick wasnt never even a top 15 candidate for “6th man of the yr” so how is he a Manu type? no he’s a guy overpaid(officially) and overvalued by fans.

Knowing Otis, he'll most likely take a vet
But seeing as how he’s drafted two players this year, maybe he’ll be more open to Lin and other young guys.
FEAR THE MEER!
This
Lin looked great today vs. Washington. I have never seen him drive to the hole like he did. Kid is a legend out here in Palo Alto. Also, he did an awesome job of containing Wall when he had the assignment (even won a jump ball against him). That said, it’s hard for me to imagine Otis taking a gamble on an undrafted kid from the Ivy League…

being of Asian descent myself, I know it's getting the proper NBA type body that will be the problem for him
Summer League is closer to college basketball than to an NBA regular season game.
After watching the Karate Kid, maybe Lin can provide us with some Bruce Bowen style defense.

Never thought I'd say this (as a Magic fan) about Redick...
But this is the best Magic news I’ve heard all month. You never know what you have until it’s (almost) gone. I think J.J. will be even better this year.
On a totally unrelated note, Dwight Howard’s impression of Lebron James is hilarious. I was rolling!!
I agree with the word Never, but he had a decent year in 09. He played much better than VC against Boston. Carter’s contract is not guarenteed in 10-11; I can see him as our SG of the future; he’s definetely cheaper than VC, and we have three more years to get a good return on a guy that we drafted and stays with the team more than a few years ( i.e. C. Magettee & M. Miller).

Yes, people here always talk trash about Rashard's contract
but at the time it was signed, I think one of the reasons (maybe not the most importatnt) was for the management to say: “hey come to Orlando, we got money and if you do your job right we’ll pay you good for it.” It’s great for an organization to show that to its players and JJ deserved it since he wanted to stay and all. I expect an aven bettrer year from him and I predict a game winner soon enough.
Don't mind my spelling. I'm a Typo Master.
Great News!
Now that brings our payroll to 93.5 million which is supposedly the highest in the league and they still have the BAE and vet min…thats messed up…Ownership is going want a return on these MiLLionS of Luxury(what an ironic name) Tax. They have to get it this year cant lay an egg in the conf finals like last season. Jameer should do his bondage thing for twice as long this year.
is that including the tax? when I went to Shamsports.com the payroll was a little over 87 mil. if you use 7.6 mil for JJ this year.
I was just curious cuz I was trying to figure out how much we are over the lux. tax line by, so if you have different info please share :)
The luxury tax threshold for this coming season will be $70.307 million
The Magic will eventually have a team payroll of over $90 million, so they will have to pay a luxury tax of about $20 million.

Where are you getting the $90m+ figure from?
It’s $75m before the Redick contract or the two guys coming in for the MLE. I make that $88.3m before the BAE, but even if we use that for a third string point guard, we’ll only just be nudging past $90m. And if we get a veteran minimum guy, we’ll be under $90m.
We’d have to add the full BAE and, ooh, 3 veteran minimum deals to get to $94.
Not that $90m or so isn’t a substantial payroll anyway.

19.5 for Lewis

Lewis/AnderBass (don’t know who they will go with this season – probably still up in the air)
Dwight/Gortat
That is how it should look. Probably will be an 11 man rotation just like last year.

11 man rotations work really well. I don’t get the insistence on overloading a team with too much talent but Otis Smith has it.

I think it kinda hurt us a little in the post-season
But most of the 11 people are going to be the same, so the guys will pretty much know what they are going to get. (Anderson/Bass will be the odd guys out) I hope both of them can earn some playing time to further help our flexibility coming down the stretch.
Ahhh, OK
The figures I’ve been using weren’t including JJ’s qualifying offer, and I thought they were, hence why I’m $3.9m short of everyone else.

So pleased we're keeping JJ
Great news Otis will keep JJ. Gonna miss Barnes, hopefully Q-Rich will step up. GO MAGIC.
Blue and White Ignite..... BOOM!
Reality check
Everybody seems to think Redick is worth the money (some obviously for their own reasons which have nothing to do with the sport) but I hope everybody realizes there’s more to the game than shooting. He’s still a defensive liability and it’s going to be more evident next season because of his contract. I’d rather see him trying to keep up with the other twos in the league for two mil than constantly being reminded we’re now paying for “effort” at the rate of six mil. Let’s hope he’s worth it in stats and not someones comfort level when they look at the bench. He’s better than when he started but I don’t see heavens gates opening when he gets on the court.
by telka on Jul 16, 2010 7:57 AM EDT via mobile reply actions
According to Eddy at MagicBasketball .net , he is an average defender and an above average offender
err, above average offensive player and recieving a fair contract for what he brings.
Quote: I talked to a statistician that works for the NBA — can’t reveal his name — and he told me that his metrics value Redick at $6.6 million. End quote.

I was challenging telka's assertion that JJ was a defensive liability
I wasn’t responding to your post, I was responding to his. I think you and I are agreeing here.
Stats can be distorted
It doesn’t take into consideration when someone blows past him but Dwight cleans it up. Without someone like extraordinary Dwight backing him up his average defensive skills diminish significantly. I like Redick and respect his game but some are acting as if he’s the missing piece for a championship. It’s great to keep those you drafted but he is replaceable.
by telka on Jul 16, 2010 2:34 PM EDT via mobile up reply actions
Most efficient offensive player in the NBA last year. Plays hard. Works hard. Consistent. Reliable.
Yeah, guys like Redick are a dime a dozen.
are you making up the numbers?
What numbers are you using to come up with the “most efficient player in the NBA” moniker? Let’s compare Redick to Miller:
Redick:
FG% 43.9%, 3pt% 40.5%, eFG% 54%, TS% 60.6%
Mike MIller:
FG% 50.1%, 3pt% 48%, eFG% 59.6%, TS% 62.3%
I just picked Miller off the top of my head. As you see he is far more efficient than Redick in every single category. I’m not sure where you got it that Redick is the most efficient player in the NBA. The number from Redick which is impressive is his TS% at 60%. However, for every other single year of his career he shot 56% TS% which is pretty average for someone like Redick who doesn’t take many shots so he can be selective. And you have to ask yourself whether this bumb from 56% to 60% was due to his contract year. I’m beginning to think so because his other numbers don’t really support a 60% TS%. For instance his FG% is abysmal.
And if you want to use advanced statistics, then just take a look at PER. In the last year Redick, a person you call “the most efficient player in the NBA” registered a PER of 15. So, yes, people like Redick do grow on trees in the NBA, at least when you judge by the much more useful stat of PER over efficiency —-and they grow on trees by definition since a 15 PER is exactly average.
That is a ridiculous standard
What if Redick shot a 100 shots in those 10 minutes less played? You’re not making much sense.
basically
efficiency is not points per time played but points per shot or possession. The TS% is the pure efficiency number. It has absolutely nothing to do with time played.

So
Are you saying he’s irreplaceable? You sound as if on the Magic he is now on the untouchable list next to Dwight. Jameer was trade bait this offseason and if he can be traded so can Redick which means he’s REPLACEABLE. These mancrushes are getting a little too much right now.
by telka on Jul 16, 2010 5:18 PM EDT via mobile up reply actions
Not easily replaced with what is available to us on the open market.
Jameer would have been involved in a trade that got us CHRIS FREAKING PAUL. There are probably 10 people in the league who Jameer would be involved in a trade for, because he has a decently priced contract for what he gives us. JJ is slightly overpaid, but we would have been a lot worse off if we didn’t resign him.
You didn't answer the question.

His about Roger Mason since you need someone. They have basically the same role and he would thrive in an offense like the Magic. Now I’m not saying AGAIN that I don’t like Redick but I’m just proving a point and just wonder by all the earlier post if the reason people want him on the team so badly is for other reasons.
by telka on Jul 16, 2010 6:00 PM EDT via mobile up reply actions
Context, context, context.
Redick is not an irreplaceable player, but due to the make-up of the rest of the roster and the weakness of the remainder of the free agent market, he became an imperative signing.

If you expect heaven's gates opening
For a $6m p.a. player, you’ve got the wrong league.
JJ’s an average NBA player. His salary is around 9% more than the average NBA player, so we’re overpaying by 9%, assuming he doesn’t improve at all.
Oh noes, breaking the bank etc.

An average player's 3 years contract would be $18.6 million
that very close to $19 million
Average salary = 5.765 million
With 8% increase 6.226 million
With 16% increase 6.687 million
Total 18.678 million

The average of the all NBA players contracts remains the same over the length of the contract
Assuming a static salary cap. Whilst a particular player’s contract may go up or down, new players getting new deals at the average salary keep the average static.
If the cap goes up, obviously the average salary changes. But you can’t just assume contracts rise at 8% a year, because they don’t.
by eltharion_doa on Jul 16, 2010 9:30 PM EDT up reply actions
Most contracts grow at 8% unless resigning with the same team, then they grow at 10%
Most contracts are backloaded to minimize first year cap impact. Contacts that are level or fronloaded are the exception.

Yes
But that’s not the point. The point is that with contracts continually expiring and being renewed, new deals being signed at the MLE level (which is based on the salary cap, not the average wage) and veterans playing for the minimums, the average player’s pay packet doesn’t rise at 8%. The guy who was paid the average wage in one year and gets an 8% raise is offest by all the deals which expire and all the new deals signed at different, reduced levels.

+ big Z is next, I’m curious to see if they’ll get J-Will how much they’ll pay him compared to last years’ min.
Don't mind my spelling. I'm a Typo Master.
3 top guys took 1.5 - 2 mil less starting out over the max
and then they traded beasley for cap space which freed up another 5 million, so they had like 7 million worth of salary to play with. 4 mil per year for miller and 3 something mil per year on Haslem I believe is how it figured out.
Wade and friends took paycuts
Because Bosh and James did sign and trades, they could be offered high yearly raises than if they’d just done a free agent deal, so the Heat could offer the same money overall, but backload it more and therefore pay a substantially lower starting salary.
They only really need to save about $2.5m per contract to have the cap room to sign Haslem and Miller to $4m average, backloaded deals.
Nothing dodgy necessary, just clever capology.

I already told you, I’m not a conspiracy kinda guy, I just believe that people on that team will get more money than what they annonce either with bonuses, their expences or whatever. When you build a budget even in a “normal” enterprise you count on those kind of things, it’s not illegal. And I only say this because it gets on my nervs when everyone who joins the Heat sudenly has “made sacrifices”, lets not kid the everyone plz.
Don't mind my spelling. I'm a Typo Master.
The NBA is not the same as 'normal' enterprises
Bonuses do exist, but they’re rarer in max contracts. They might have provisions for bonus clauses, sure, but they’re all still going to be giving up money. Haslem was offered full MLE deals – but his base salary next season with the Heat will probably be a touch under $4m.
Even with bonuses, he has to be giving up at least $1.5m. That’s a lot of cash.

Great!
By keeping JJ I think this has been a positive offseason. We got just a bit better with the moves (although I’ll still miss Barnes). Nothing big, but small improvements. If we let JJ walk we would have definitely regressed this offseason.

Matt Barnes going to the Lakers possibly
He hasnt announced it yet, but he kinda let the cat out of the bag by saying hes was in LA

Clippers?
They would be able to give him the money he wants anyway. But you’re right; it’s probably the Lakers. Especially after they were making that big hoodoo about Raja Bell and Kobe liking that Bell got up in his grill a few years ago. Matt did that last year to Kobe as well.

As long as it's not the Heat or Celtics
At least the Lakers can pay him some.

Isn't that weird?
I actually don’t mind Barnes going to the Lakers either. I like him, and I just want him to get his big payday. If the Magic cannot/will not do it, it might as well be the Lakers or some other team.

I dont like him going to the Lakers. Those guys dont need a decent defender who can come in for Artest and essentially be a poor man’s version. They are both good defenders and looney. I hope and pray he’s chasing the money and goes to the Clipps. Also, based on what the Lakers were offering Bell…I don’t see how Barnes goes there. BUT the only reason they were going after Bell is because KB8 respected the fact Bell has the balls to clothesline him. That fake inbounds pass during the Laker game this year was pretty gutsy on Barnes’ part.

Plus
We only have to see him play with a chip on his shoulder twice a season, unless until we make the Finals.

I Iike him too
I just don’t want him pulling an Ariza everytime we play them. He is the type of person that wants to make every team he played for in the past regret it (gonna be half the league soon).

The lakers aren't going to give him his big payday
The lakeshow have about $1.8m to offer him left from their MLE money. Not really a payday kind of thing. But he gets to play significant minutes with the back to back champs and that’s got to mean something to him. If he wanted money he would go elsewhere.
How can they pay him some?
All they’ve got is the minimum
They have $1.8 M of the MLE left.
More than what the Celtics and Heat can offer.

And
More than he was earning last season. Not much more first year, but on a three year deal with 8% raises, he could earn a decent sum.

What to do
What am I going to do with my black and blue “MATT BARNES WILL KILL YOU” t-shirt? Not the most skilled guy in world obviously, but a tough son of a bitch. I will be dissappointed to see him leave. He has the attitude we need, too bad he couldnt hit about 38% from behind the arc.
He's from the Sac area though.

reality check#2
As a Lakers fan i think i’m very unbiased on the Redick subject. I think that the Redick buy was a great get for the Magic. However, a huge red flag is that his only year of great play was last year, a contract year.
As a Lakers fan i know the pit falls of giving a guy a big contract after a splendid contract year, most notably Sasha Vujacic, Luke Walton. These have been the most horrible contracts the Lakers have given out. In hindsight, it was because of the contract year blip. I wonder if JJ Redick has changed for good or if his performance last year was just a contract year thing…time will tell.
It's obviously something of a gamble
Such is life in the NBA.
by eltharion_doa on Jul 16, 2010 9:32 PM EDT up reply actions
Also
You may not put any faith in the advanced metrics, but Redick’s WARP (wins above replacement player) for next season is projected to be 4.2 – to put that into context, Ray Allen’s is 5.2 and Mike Millers is 3.7. Fitting, then, that he got a contract somewhere in the middle of those two guys.

you follow him more than i do
But here are some stats:
TS% over his 4 years in the league (pure efficiency number on offense):
06-07 56.9%
07-08 56.9%
08-09 56.2%
09-10 60.6%
His PER over 4 years in the league:
06-07 13.0
07-08 12.7
08-09 9.9
09-10 15.0
From the numbers i see no progression here. I see choppy numbers and then last year in his contract year a bump up. Perhaps you see something different by watching the games instead of looking at the numbers.
Why do you spend several posts arguing with us and then conclude with:
you follow him more than i do
??
Seems like that would make a better starting point than ending point for the discourse.

Those stats don’t show much improvement, but others do:

07-08 .523
08-09 .503
09-10 .540
AST%
06-07 9.7
07-08 9.7
08-09 10.3
09-10 13.9
TOV%
06-07 8.7
07-08 10.9
08-09 13.7
09-10 8.8
He’s making more threes, and handling the ball more while turning it over less (his turnover rate is back down to his rookie level, when he wasn’t a ballhandler at all). His shooting hasn’t really improved much because it had no room to improve – he was already a darn good sniper. What’s improved is the rate at which he gets fouled, his ability to make plays off the ball, and his ability to handle the ball and pass.
Honor is no substitute for victory.
Need to include his MPG and USG%, too.

SVG is trusting him more and more. He’s a reliable guy.
Of course the caveat is that this season, we will expect even more from him.
