Otis Smith has been planning this the entire time. He has been scheming behind curtains to acquire PG Chris Paul since Vince Carter decided he didn't like the spotlight in the Eastern Conference Finals. He did what a good NBA General Manager does. He know when he is wrong and tries to fix it, even if it means admitting he made a mistake by trading for Vince Carter on this day a year ago. Evidence leaked that Otis Smith was engaged in discussions with the New Orleans Hornets about trading for perennial All Star Chris Paul by trading current PG Jameer Nelson and SG Vince Carter and Smith did not want the world to know this was happening. That way in case he couldn't reach a deal, Nelson and Carter would not lose confidence in their respective roles on the team. The Hornets would not accept the deal so Otis Smith decided he needed one final piece to the trade.
A reporter for New Orleans wrote that the Hornets desperately need a big man to add to a dire need; defense. Preferably, Daniel Orton would fill this need. At pick number 11, the Hornets went with C Cole Aldrich who also fills that need. However, they would later trade him as well as dump Morris Peterson bad contract on the thunder. So once again they need a solid big. Many NBA Analysts close to the Magic reported that Orladno were believe to pick players that fit needs such as Quincy Pondexter from Washington, or Jordan Craword from Xavier. However, when the Magic were on the clock at number 29, Otis Smith was shocked to see PF Daniel Orton out of Kentucky to still be on the board. So instead of picking a team need, the Magic went with yet another PF to add to the cramped rotation where Brandon Bass could barely see any time. Does this seem a little strange? Not to Otis Smith. This was part of his master plan.
Otis Smith now believes that they have the final chip to add with Jameer Nelson and Vince Carter in Daniel Orton to swap with Chris Paul and another horrible contract to completely relieve the Hornets cap situation. This was great planning by the Magic GM to trade for another superstar in his prime to accompany superstar Dwight Howard.
