OMG
So I’m sitting here watching the ’98 Draft on NBATV and just realized 3 of our players are from that same draft: Lewis, Vince and J-Will.
Life's too short. Be a fan. Orlando Magic, Arizona Cardinals,Tampa Bay Rays and of course "the U"! What a winning combo.
Why Vasquez over Dominique Jones?
I mean to be completely honest, you’re giving guaranteed money to a guy who you hope can be a backup point guard at best. That’s why unless there is a future starting point guard caliber player (Bledsoe, Armon Johnson, Bradley, etc…), the Magic should address point guard in free agency. Dominique Jones is a prolific scorer and gives depth at wing, which is potentially an area of need. At worst, you’re talking about a guy who comes off the bench and attacks the basket.
And I know it’s not a need, but if by some chance Daniel Orton falls to the Magic at 29, it’s a no brainer selection. There’s absolutely ZERO risk in drafting Orton at 29.
Except you're giving guaranteed money to a guy who has failed every step of the way in the draft process
Maybe a 2nd-rounder, but not a first.
Also, I only considered players the Magic worked out, and Jones wasn't one of them. Vasquez is better anyway.
Vasquez had a better college career.
That does not mean he’s “better anyway.” Besides, on who’s opinion are you basing this anyway? You admittedly don’t watch much college basketball. And I have not seen many (any) opinions that rate Vasquez ahead of Dominique Jones as a player.
I’ve watched Vaquez for four years now. He is what he is— not a great athlete who struggles against good defense. In a game where you need to be able to create your own shot, he won’t be able to do it. You’re essentially drafting a slightly taller JJ Redick with a worse outside shot. He was also “the man” for Maryland, allowing him to compile stats out of necessity. Don’t get me wrong- he’s a gamer. I just totally disagree with drafting him in the 1st round. You might as well draft John Scheyer (similar player) or Matt Bouldin (better ball handler, just as heady) late in the 2nd round if you want a tall PG who is a gamer.
It’s not a big deal. It’s just a SB Mock Draft. I’m just not a fan of Vasquez in the 1st round.
Scheyer is "similar"...
…except that he created around as many assists as a senior as Vasquez did as a freshman. Bouldin averaged 4 assists per game as senior — he’s not a point guard. There is a huge gap between Vasquez and those guys in terms of production.
The Magic's total second-round margin of victory: 101 points.
The Hawks' highest second-round game score: 98 points.
Meh, we might as well add to the Reece Gaines, Jerryl Sasser list of tall Magic- drafted point guards that didn't pan out
It’s been quite a few years, so the Magic were due.

Kevin Felton did his comparison of players this year
The closest match for Grievis Vasquez? Keith Bogans
Honor is no substitute for victory.
That's weird and faulty.
Bogans never averaged more than 2.5 assists a game in college. Vasquez never averaged less than 4.
The Magic's total second-round margin of victory: 101 points.
The Hawks' highest second-round game score: 98 points.

I’m reading that Deng to Orlando for MP and Gortat is possible. With Kirk traded, Chicago has room for two max players, and now it’s a matter of basketball fits so a 7fter defensive center who can serviceably guard Dwight and a “threes-and-d” wing make perfect sense for Chicago regardless of whoever FAs they get. I’m not sure how Deng really fits in Orlando, I like how it upgrades the starting lineup, but the Magic should be thinking zero sum mentality and thinking, why should we trade good support players (Gortat may be more easily) for a team we see in ECF/rnd2 probly??
Well, whatever, there’s my thoughts. Just thought the link might be interesting. Maybe Ben can comment on his thoughts of this potential deal.

Foyle is gone, maybe.
This guy is not going to play minutes in the NBA next year.
(Gortat might be out the door too — but not for reasons having anything to do with Orton.)

Well, that was a waste of a pick.
Guy who couldn’t even score, defend or rebound in college. If he ever does turn into anything worthwhile, it won’t be for at least 2 years.
I mean, I’m not opposed to drafting a project — the Magic certainly don’t need much help now. But, like, Hassan Whiteside is a project. This guy is just a bust.

…and that he might be worth a second round pick, but not a first round pick.
