jameers issue is not that he cannot defend

the best way to stop a point gaurd is to make him work on defense and jameer worked very hard on offense, which in turn caused many point guards that faced us to work hard on defense. The one downfall that i think jameer has is that he doesn’t have his passing game developed fully yet. If he works hard this summer on his passing game, like many of the other magic players are working on improvements, then he will continue to be a good fit for us. blue and white Go magic next year.

b real

he not 21 he is who he is and who he is is bobby jackson good shooter good ball handler
and thats it i think jammer has more hart than him! rafer alston is a tough point gaurd remember when smacked eddy house’s head band an made it do a 360? remember how it changed that series thats what we are lacking do u agree????

by bigmoo on Jun 16, 2010 4:05 PM EDT reply actions

so your saying that we should get rafer alston because he smacked some one in the head that has nothing to do with toughness that is being stupid because he jeopardized his team and nelson is not perfect, i will agree he does have issues on D but he’s the motor that runs this team

Wow. This is funny. Welcome to OPP.

Rondo, you know the All Star PG, is held under his season average by Orlando in every category except for RPG and MPG. And, Nelson was the starting PG on one of the last 4 teams standing (not that means a whole lot, ’cause Derek Fisher is, too). And, he was the starting PG on a team that ended the season #2 in team defense.

And, you forgot to mention any realistic scenario for replacing Nelson with a player that you view as an improvement.

Nelson is not above critique, but I don’t think, “in truth our real issue is we cant defend at the point.”

"I've had people say, 'I don't need to check the [player statistics]. I've seen it with my eyes.' Well, I would also say your eyes lie to you sometimes, and some of the guys you may really like and think are really doing things, when you get deeper into it, aren't or vice versa." ~Stan Van Gundy

then what do u feel it is bro !! we cant get stops the ball get in the paint way too easy witch leads to DH picking up needless fouls maks him challange shots taking him away from the basket witch make it easy too box him out !! do you even rember what Billups did to jameer like 3 stright years posting him up shooting 3’s in his face hes just too small an he dont play the passing lanes like other small gaurds ( CP3 A.I derren collison ect)

by bigmoo on Jun 16, 2010 6:38 PM EDT up reply actions

Yep, his height makes defense a little tougher for him.

I don’t think it is fair to expect Jameer to be a defensive stopper as a <6ft PG. He’s not. We all know that.

But, as you allude, it is a team game and team-wise, Orlando does pretty well. Jameer’s physical strength makes him pretty good at fighting over/through screens…which not a few of the league’s taller point guards are not wiling to do.

btw, nobody really stops the top PGs in the league from getting into the lane….that’s the new NBA. No hand-checking. And Billups was in All-Star form (i.e. the top in the league) when he used to score over Nelson.

Like I said, Jameer has his flaws, but he’s not the problem with the Magic. Some of the reasons I think we lost the Boston series are:
> wing defense (Pierce and Allen killed us),
> Lewis was sick,
> Boston had the greater heart-and-hustle (Orlando has some, but Boston’s was more consistent),
> got away from the P&R offense entirely too much (1/2, 1/5, 2/5),
> and no wing player consistently able to get to the rim and either finish or get to the line.

Looking at the list, imo, Carter was more of a problem in the ECF than Jameer (but that’s for another thread….we’ve been over it ad infinitum).

Rondo’s season averages are: 13.7ppg on 50.8fg%, 9.8 apg in 36.5 mpg.
ECF stats?: 14.3ppg on 42.3 fg%, 8 apg in 42+ mpg.

Looks like Nelson’s/Orlando’s defense matches how the rest of the league, over the course of the season, handles Rondo….maybe slightly better…-8% on fg%

So, while it may look like Nelson’s defense is the team’s biggest hole, the numbers tell a little different story.

Its hard to follow with all the missing punctuation and misspellings. If I’m not mistaken, he is saying that we need an upgrade over Nelson. That or Mop and Glo isn’t the best to wax wood floors. I haven’t quite figured it out yet.

dude

he averaged 20, 5, and 5 in the playoffs. you can’t ask for more than that. i mean his defense isn’t great by any means but he’s certainly NOT mike bibby. frankly, i just think we got beat by a better team.

by Snyde on Jun 17, 2010 11:30 AM EDT up reply actions

nelson is the man dude.he just can,t do it alone or can he remember the bobcat series.we would have lost atleased 2 games if it was not for nelson. he saved us.

imo carter has no will to win and that alone lost us the boston series.i hope next year carter will pick it up i dought it tho.he is who he is.great one night sub par the next.

i agree nelson is a great shooter and a excellent teammate and is a tough player which performed well when we most needed him during the playoffs in the bobcat series

There's no one available who would do better than Jameer

…as magicfaninTN commented earlier.

I don’t agree at all with the idea that Nelson needs to be replaced, anyhow.

Drafting a Mikhail Torrnance or getting Kyle Lowry would be promising for the PG defense department. I think CJ would defend well too. But that’s about all Ill say bad about Jameer, who still is a solid defender, tires his assignment to defend him right back, and is to me a top 6, 7 PG or so.

Let's make more of a practice of remarking on the comments rather than the commenter, huh?

Good examples beget good responses. Otherwise we devolve into name-calling and no one benefits from the discussion.

I'm just gonna say this argument is old.

Jameer is the best fit for our team and the best point guard we can get with our (no) money.

Unlike most teams we have no problems at the 1 and 5...

I believe we have viable options at PF as well in Bass and Anderson. They both compliment Dwight in their own ways. Its just up to SVG to let them play. We have problems with our other wing players which is extremely clear after Pierce and Allen killed us. Pietrus needs to step up for us this year. There is no reason why he cant be solid on both ends of the court. He settles for bad shots and occasionally coasts on D. I just dont think he really demands that much greatness out of himself. He has all the tools to be great if he just got out of his own way

I probably know Judo! How many of you can make the same boast?

If you have ever watched his story on "Inside the Magic" you will know why he doesn't give it all he's got consistently.

And I quote,
“I was scared Orlando Magic fans!”
I really think we should trade Peaches and re-sign Matt to that type of contract. We’ve had a revolving door at the 2 and 3 for quite some time now. Once we are set there, we should be able to win a few ’ships.

And how does that eliminate the Magic's perceived height problem at point?

I remember footage of this kid playing one-on-one with Jamal Crawford (who is a Seattle resident), and Crawford schooled the kid. He might only be 11 years old, but a loss is a loss.

List of who I'd take over Nelson...

Chris Paul, Deron Williams, Derrick Rose, and I’m forgetting someone, oh yeah, Mo Will…. NOT!!!

by Colossus57 on Jun 18, 2010 1:41 PM EDT up reply actions

Sure, why not

Paul makes $14.9 milion, Williams makes $14.9 million and Nelson makes $8.1 million. (Rose is still under his rookie contract at $5.5).

But sure, if I could get Paul or Williams for Nelson money I’d do it in a heart beat, but for what Jameer is paid he is a good deal.

Exactly

There aren’t any reasonable, available alternatives to Nelson.

by eltharion_doa on Jun 18, 2010 10:40 PM EDT up reply actions

jameer is not the problem

jameer can defend good point guards when necessary. billups has success against bascially every point guard in the nba because of his size, rondo also has success, and he had to take tough shots in this series but still made them, and most of the time the defense isnt one on one, its pnr defense so u cant just point the blame to jameer.

by magicfan07 on Jun 18, 2010 1:03 AM EDT reply actions

Yeah, Orlando probably has one of the worst defending backcourts in the NBA

but Jameer showed flashes of brilliance last year and while not a top tier defender, what he can do offensively often hides that. Vince, on the other hand, is just horrible all around.

by Ol' Uncle Munnerlyn on Jun 19, 2010 9:26 PM EDT reply actions

No, he's not

Top ten in the NBA at SG in PER, 11th in both wins and value added.

Had a better defensive rating than Redick too, and right in line with the team averages. 4th highest on the team in win shares/48 minutes, 4th in defensive win shares, 3rd in offensive win shares.

Carter may have underperformed compared to what people hoped, but he was still a comfortable above average NBA player at his position. That is not “horrible”.

by eltharion_doa on Jun 20, 2010 2:14 AM EDT up reply actions

Jameer

Isn’t the reason we didn’t advance to the finals.. I think he’s an above average player, we just didn’t get enough production from our Top two paid players.
