PrintCongratulations to the Chicago Blackhawks, the 2010 NHL Stanley Cup Champions!
The Blackhawks beat an outstanding Philadelphia Flyers team in Game 6 of the Finals Wednesday night in a dramatic OT win 4-3, winning the series 4 games to 2. This breaks one of the longest championship droughts in any sport, as this is the first Blackhawks' championship since 1961!
After all the disappointment of having the Magic being eliminated by Boston in the ECF, it's a feeling of elation now for me with the Blackhawks winning the Stanley Cup. Just wanted to share the great news, even though I realize that most OPP members aren't Blackhawks' fans.
I can only hope that one day we Orlando Magic Fans will get the chance to experience the Magic winning the NBA Championship.

It’s a very exciting time here in the Chicago area, to say the least.
All kinds of fireworks went off around my neighborhood after the game-winning goal.

It’s been a pretty good couple of weeks for me… I can say that I was at the last Magic game ever at Amway Arena, along with being able to experience the Blackhawks’ championship.

That was the only silver lining about the Magic season.
It ended away from Amway.

After watching the game, I took in all the TV coverage afterwards… all the Chicago stations covered the post-game celebration for almost two hours.

JR was drafted by the Blackhawks and played with the team for 8 seasons
…and is still loved by all Blackhawks fans.
Ironically, he played with the Flyers for a couple seasons, but obviously his allegiances will always be with Chicago.

I’ve only really had 2 with the UConn men in ’99 and ’04. Still waiting for Raiders and/or Magic titles…

What do you call the SIX titles the Bulls won in the 90’s. I have no sympathy for Chicago. Not even sure how this belongs on OPP.

I would call 49 years between championships a pretty long time
…that’s the last time the Blackhawks won the Stanley Cup before this season.
As far as the Bulls and their titles in the 90s… I was happy for them, but the Magic have been and always will be my team in the NBA (I’ve never been to a Bulls’ game at the UC but I’ve been to about 30 Magic games in Orlando on my visits to the city, including the last Magic game ever played at Amway Arena), and when the day comes that the Magic win the NBA title, I’ll be way happier than I ever was for any of the Bulls’ titles.

The Sox hadn’t won a WS since 1917. The Cubs haven’t won since 1908, the Bears since 1985, I don’t remember if DePaul’s championships really count in the modern era, and I’m not sure about Illinois or whatever college teams that are out that way. Other than the Bulls 6 titles in the 90’s (which was unusual in of itself), I’m not sure Chicago would be high on my list of championship cities.
Bliz, I’ve been reading OPP since it was 3QC. I’ve had an account since 2007, and the Magic aren’t even my team. You joined OPP 6 moths ago. Mike has been at OPP/3QC for over 2 years. If there’s a problem with Mike (and I’ve never seen one incident where there was—and people will tell you that I’m known for my incidents—mostly at StR), than Ben can take it up with him.
I’ve seen fanposts about the World Cup which has nothing to do with the NBA at all on other sites (like StR and I’m sure there are a few others elsewhere that have done something similar). Unless you’re going to tell Ben how to run his site, I’d suggest letting him moderate it as he see’s fit.

Most of my mental energy (right now) is Kings devoted GMG.
I’ll try to stick my head in here every day and contribute something. I’m going to work on a fanpost that’s Magic oriented here and hopefully I’ll have it up over the weekend sometime.

As far as the college teams go, DePaul and Illinois have never won NCAA championships. The only Illinois Division I team to win the NCAA title was Loyola of Chicago in 1963.
The Blackhawks and the Cubs had the longest championship droughts in their respective sports; now that the Blackhawks have come through after 49 years, the Cubs are now the only Chicago pro sports team to have gone so long without a championship (it’s only the longest championship drought in the history of professional sports… 102 years).
BTW, they estimated that there were 2 million fans who gathered in downtown Chicago for the championship parade and rally! I enjoyed it watching on TV from the quiet and comfort of home.
“Bliz” missed the entire point of my post… I certainly wasn’t looking for sympathy for Chicago, I merely wanted to share the great news about the Blackhawks winning with all the people I know on here who previously expressed to me on game threads that they wish the best for the ’Hawks in the playoffs (pookeyguru, GMG, swishh, and a couple others). I was also happy to see the positive feedback from several others OPP members on my fanpost.
Anyway, I’m not going to crucify “Bliz”; since he is a member of OPP, I guess I can assume he is an avid fan of the Orlando Magic, and that’s one common bond everyone shares on here.

Wow. My comment seems to have been blown way out of proportion. If my questioning of why a post about a chicago hockey team is on a blog about an orlando basketball team is construed as hating, then so be it. Hating was not my intention. The point of my comment was in reference to Mike saying that Chicago championships were so rare.
Pookey, since you seem very concerned with dates and longevity, as of 1991 when the Bulls won their first title, no city has collectively won more professional championships than Chicago with 8 titles. New York is 2nd with 7 and Boston and LA are tied with 6.
I guess I’m a little bitter seeing as how the Magic were very close to the Finals again this year and fell short. Congrats to your team Mike. No hard feelings man. I hope to one day read a post from you proclaiming the Magic as NBA champs.

Your boys outplayed my boys (I’m originally from Philly – the Magic are the only non-Philadelphia team I root for regularly).
I don’t know if either of our teams will wind up there next year, though. Both of them are facing cap problems, especially Chicago – Toews winning the Smythe will cost them a couple million off next year’s cap.
Honor is no substitute for victory.

I remember us talking about the Blackhawks/Flyers during one of the Magic game threads.
The Flyers really earned my respect throughout the playoffs and Finals; they gave the Blackhawks all they could handle.
You guys have a bunch of really good players, and like you said, it’ll be interesting to see the off-season changes that both teams have to make due to the cap.
I’m relieved that the Blackhawks will have the core of Toews, Kane and Keith back next season; you’re right though, there is no guarantee for next season, so I sure am enjoying this now.
