Tonight's Orlando Magic Playoff Game: at Boston Celtics

Orlando Magic at Boston Celtics, May 22, 2010 8:30 PM EDT

Tonight, the Orlando Magic visit the Boston Celtics at TD Garden in hopes of drawing to within a game of the Celtics in the Eastern Conference Finals. Down 2-0 in the series, Orlando hopes to become the fourth team to rally back to win a series after dropping the first two games at home. To do that, well, everyone has some ideas, which we've covered in the last two news posts. To me, it's simple: play better. The gameplan and rotations are solid, but execution and focus are lagging. Orlando's playing like a team that hasn't quite been there before, which needs to change.

Bennett Salvatore??

Ugh…99% ready to congratulate the Magic on the win already. Salvatore has historically been an awful ref for the Celtics and has a quick whislte on technicals.

Good luck tonight though Magic fans, it looks like our series is the only one worth watching. That no defense series out West is a joke and neither one of those teams really deserves to be in the Finals.

by sexyscottish on May 22, 2010 7:25 PM EDT reply actions

If it helps, Salvatore used to call games in favor of Orlando

But something happened this year and he now has it out for Dwight. So it seems both teams should prepare for the wrath of Bennett.

For some reason I feel significantly less nervous about this game than game 1 or 2 . . .

perhaps because it feels like they have nothing to lose? Oh well . . .

I'm in the same boat.

I’ve resigned myself to the fact that the odds are against the Magic, but they still have the talent to adjust and win the series however unlikely.

The Celtics are 3 1/2 point favorites

…with an over/under of 189 1/2.

For the series, the Celtics are a whopping -500 favorites to win, while the Magic are +375 underdogs.

Boston figured out how to shut down the Magic’s predictable offense. And the Celtics’ athleticism is overwhelming us when we’re defending them…This series is over. But I hope that Otis has some type of plan to rearrange this roster for next year. We can NOT stick these same 12 guys out there and expect a different result…

He shot a lot of J’s. I don’t know about a mean post player. LOL

But like Dwight he was incredible gritty defensively.

You don’t miss 3 games in 6 years of NBA ball unless you have some level of toughness and pain threshold. What bothers me is Dwight’s head.

That's what Dwight needs

He doesn’t have Shaq’s body to beat people up down low and just muscle them out of the way. He needs to be able to draw people away from the basket. He needs to shoot Js.

And if he learns how to shoot midrange shots, he’ll start knocking down FTs too.

Nope totally true.

I just think it’s exaggerating things a lot to say that Boston isn’t a major reason they’re up by a lot of points. Some of it’s Orlando’s piss poor play, but a lot of it is that Boston has peaked at the right time.

Sometimes teams & GM’s do know what they’re doing. It’s not always luck. This Boston team is an example of that.

There was 1 where the Magic didn’t miss any 3’s in Arco in 2009. That was brutal. And the game where KG punked the entire Kings team in a span of 15 seconds. And that was in 2008. I hated the 2008-09 Kings team so much. I hope I never hate a team again the way I hated them.

I think a big problem was that Boston punched these guys in the mouth and they don’t really know how to react. Boston is already a tough matchup, and then when they’re totally locked in they’re very tough to beat. Just shows how the regular season sometimes is not a precursor to the playoffs.

all boston has had to do tonight is run a single pick and roll, we double the ball handler and then they make the pass to the guyw ho is wide open under the basket.

every single fucking play was the same, and we never stopped it.

I really don't think you can explain how mentally weak this team is.

This game was 1 they should’ve started winning by ten points in the first quarter, not the other way around. When the going gets tough, the Magic disappear.

I don’t think Turkoglu would’ve made ANY difference.

it would be a possibility if we actually played our offense

Maybe on a hot night

But remember, we only shot 41% against the Celtics in the regular season too, which is what we were shooting in the first two games. We’re just not going to pile up points against their D, it’s too good. We need to defend like maniacs, and hustle like we want it, and we haven’t done either of those things.

Team got exposed.

3 years now, we’ve been defeated by physically and mentally tougher teams with bigger length in the playoffs. Dwight needs help in the paint and Dwight himself needs to get better post moves.

I thought we could beat any team except Cleveland, but Boston just got hot and the team felt it was over

And sad to say as well as Vince has played all year, he crumbled in the pressure and Dwight Howard has no killer instinct.

We might as well have had Tracy McGrady out there. Shoot, even Penny Hardaway showed more fight in the Playoffs in his heyday and people called him soft.

I think Orlando needs one more piece...

If this series is an indicator, the thing that would put Dwight and Co., over the top is a “Scorer” who creates his own shot -Turk wasn’t that guy, neither is Vince, but add that one piece and I see Stan Van bringing the finals to Orlando…

by jyrecelts on May 22, 2010 11:46 PM EDT reply actions

To be honest man, I've never felt we were designed for a title with our style

We have a culture where everyone except the 5 shoots the 3 and yet for 3 straight years we’ve been throttled in the Playoffs by teams with length in the frontcourt who can harrass Dwight (Pistons, Lakers and Celtics). We need length there. Im fine with the backcourt but I hate the culture of the 3.

I had a conversation with Ben the other about how I wish we had Trevor Ariza. And he said “he couldnt shoot and 1-4 need to shoot the 3” or something along the lines and I was like “But he could defend and slash in and he was getting a jumper in LA”. Why should all 4 players have to be 3 point shooters? Its just troublesome because Im not sure they have that gear to take it in and draw contact. Because look what happens when we take the 3 from them.

I'm gonna go out on a limb and say they bought their own hype.

The players may have said otherwise, but they really believed they could coast their way to the Finals after Cleveland got booted, and especially after going 8-0 in the first two rounds.

The Magic we all saw since February didn’t show up against the Celtics, and I don’t care how good Boston defense is, it’s all on the Magic to blame.

The team didn’t go from “best team in the NBA” to “OMG they are all crap!” all of a sudden. The players are there, the coaching staff is there… they just showed up overconfident against Boston, and with the first show of resistance they’ve had in months, they all folded.

I may be wrong, but the Lakers are winning it all again.

They wont be bullied by the Celtics.

Possibly, ironically Artest on Pierce could be the difference

He may get rings

but if he does he will be surrounded by players with more “heart” than the Magic displayed tonight.

He still makes stupid "kid mistakes"...

I don’t really see him as “though”. Certainly not mentally though. But whatever it is, this was a team collapse. The Celtics are just the superior team.

SVG has to go

This is what has to happen in order for us to win it all. SVG has to go, because he made little effort to make adjustments. When Dwight is not commanding a double team, SVG has no clue how to implement a strategy to reverse the stagnation of our offense. Second, we need a real power forward, when rashards shot is not falling, he is basically useless and can not rebound worth a damn. And lastly, we need a real point guard. I don’t think jameer nelson is a bad player, but his game revolves around Dwights ability to draw so much attention and he isn’t a great passer. I fear what the future is going to look like for Orlando, we have no cap space and little wiggle room, while teams can literally bring in two legit stars and more than capable role players….

I dont think we fire Stan

By default hes become the most successful coach in Magic history, and honestly what he stresses this team to do (Run, ask Dwight to be aggressive) they arent doing. The players were outmatched this series by a better team, they have to make adjustments to get bigger and tougher. The gimmick of shooting 3s by PFs was around for a long time with this team, its just gotta change around (Stan didnt use it as much in Miami did he?)

Don't throw bStan Van out with the bathwater...

He is one of the truer coaches in this leaugue, and the Magic are where they are today, so close, because he is true… Doc rivers has more respect for Stan than Phil…

I understand what he stresses..

Its not the lack of effort or determination from SVG, its simply his inability to make the proper changes on a whim. I’m starting to think that him being fired in Miami might not just have been from Riley’s greed. He also very stubborn and stuck in his ways, if rashard is not performing well, which he is not, why on earth would you not match Boston blow for blow? Start Brandon Bass, bring rashard off the bench then match him up with PP so that his length gives him trouble. Lewis doesnt need to fall for pump fakes, and even tho he is slow, so is Pierce. Second, you need to run the P&R with Dwight and Vince almost religiously, because Bostons big men are too slow to chase guards and or roll with Dwight to the basket. I know that its not ALL SVG’s fault, because at the end of the day the players have to come out with more heart, but it is the coaches job to set his players up for the greatest shot at success and make the game easier for them offensively. He failed to do so, and even admitted it himself.

Yeah I agree with you

SVG has that mentality of “no change” of something that “works” (where “works” stands for “worked in the past series”).

You really have to be open minded as a coach and make adjustments, practice these adjustments, and trust your players to execute them.

You speak wise words...

Yet part of me sees Dwight as the centerpiece, with “improved post moves” with a playmaker, and who would beat them…?

by jyrecelts on May 23, 2010 12:42 AM EDT reply actions

And as I said earlier..

I know jameer is a great player, but we realistically need a good passer. SVG has a unhealthy infatuation with players who can shoot the 3 and loathes players who can not do that on par with his standards. Rafer took this team to the finals because even if he did not score, and mind you a lot of times he didnt, he was still a great passer and was NOT going to be bullied by the opposing point guard. So in all, Jameer has to go along with rashard and SVG. Our system is flawed because we have a team built around finesse, push us a little, and we have no clue what to do. Its like a body builder who has no clue how to fight, if his opponent is not intimidated and his first couple of blows don’t connect, he is going to lose regardless of his size. The Magic expect people to lay down and bend to their will ( style of play) and when that doesnt happen, well, what you all witnessed tonight happens.
