T-Mobile Player of the Week: Jameer Nelson

It was a successful week for the Orlando Magic, as the team went 4-0 with wins against the Philadelphia 76ers, Golden State Warriors, New Jersey Nets, and Los Angeles Lakers to extend their winning streak, overall, to five games. Leading the way for Orlando was Jameer Nelson, who is continuing to show he's returning to the form that made him an All-Star last year.

Head coach Stan Van Gundy has been doing an excellent job of monitoring Nelson's minutes to maximize his effectiveness, given the way he plays, and the move has been working. As David Steele noted in a podcast before yesterday's game between the Magic and the Lakers, Nelson is at his best when he's in attack mode. The results, lately, speak for themselves. With 10 games gone by since the All-Star break, in which Nelson has sustained a relatively high level of play, it's safe to say he's back.

That's pretty funny.

After the game, the Suns announcers asked Lopez what he was going to do to celebrate and he said, "I'm going to kill Bart Simpson."

LOL

No one outside of Orlando wants to admit he is back to all star level.

Skip Bayless stated we were better off with Rafer and Turk.

His reasoning?

But... but... Rafer should be starting over Jameer.

Even though he can’t even get a starting nod over Mario Chalmers and Carlos Arroyo.

I hate Varejao.

People always tell me we messed up by trading Rafer..

So frustrating, trying to make them understand how below avg Raf Alston really is..

Dude filled in admirably.

But he shot below 40% in the playoffs, could NOT hit a lay-up to save his life, and basically caught fire in only two games in the whole playoffs. His effect on the team was really overblown. He was just better than Anthony Johnson and Tyronn Lue, which isn’t saying much. The fact the Magic got to the Finals with him as our starting PG was more of a credit to the team than it was to him.

I hate Varejao.

+1

I couldn’t agree more. People in Fresno think this guy is Chris Paul.

Hell yeah, he's Chris Paul. On the streets, though.

I know it’s easy to make fun of Rafer but he forever has my respect after last year.

If you've ever seen Fresno, you'll understand why Rafer is the way he is.

After the game, the Suns announcers asked Lopez what he was going to do to celebrate and he said, "I'm going to kill Bart Simpson."

Mine too. I haven't been there in about 7 years though.

It's great to see Jameer playing as well as he has lately.

“Wait until after the All-Star Break” seems to have worked out well, thankfully. His on-court leadership has also been important. After one of the scuffled between Barnes and Kobe and then Kobe drew a foul on Barnes immediately after with a series of pump-fakes, Jameer was the one who came over and grabbed Matt to keep him from turning around and saying something else to Kobe. Keep it up, Jameer.

I thought that was weird.

I think it’s odd that he doesn’t get to the line more. Especially with how much he’s been driving to the hole lately. Meh.

Like that lineup, but consider the competition

14 minutes against the Pistons, 11 against the Raptors, and 6 against the Suns. Full stats of that lineup here.

They haven’t played extended minutes against any good teams yet, which is why I’m not as bullish as you are. Then again, even with a standard error of 15, a 1-year APM of 58 is awesome. At its worst, that’s a 43.

by Evan Dunlap on Mar 8, 2010 8:21 PM EST up reply actions

makes sense

Considering how stagnant the 2nd unit can get, I think that unit can maintain and/or grow a lead.

Right now there is no reason to play RA for extended minutes, considering our 5 game winning streak with Bass subbing for Lewis.. :)
