2004-2010 Player Comparison Chart

Hey Folks,

So I have been doing a lot of compiling stats lately and importing them into really useful and enjoyable to use Google Motion Charts.  As I understand it via Ben at Blazersedge you folks, Ben and Eddy included are a bit of stat heads like us up here in rain country, and thought I would pass along this chart.  It encompasses players that have compiled 15+ Poss/gm between 2004-2010, as you'll see the list of variables is pretty large. However the Default state for the chart I am linking to shows how Orlando players stack up from a value stand point. The size of the player bubble represents the salary a player earned during that year, the color of the bubble represents their number of years of service.  The 2 Axis are PER rating, and Poss/gm.

Hope you all enjoy. Here is a bit of a tutorial image that I created to help you understand how to use these graphs.

Yeah, I like to think that this is a stat-savvy community of readers. I hang around the APBR boards.

Thanks for passing along the information. It’s much appreciated!

I'm curious to see what other linear metrics (like adjusted plus/minus) would say.

I would assume they’d, more or less, jive with what PER says about LeBron.

I toyed

with the idea of adding team pace and adjusted +/- to this but haven’t gotten there at this point.

This chart is amazing. Adjusted +/- would be great

+/-

So after looking at Regularized adjusted +/- and reading a lot about the limitations, I just don’t feel like spending the several hours it will take to add that in. I do appreciate the suggestion though.

Yeah, I would imagine incorporating APM would be a tricky venture.

What about WARP? I don’t see why that’d be hard to include.

Do you have a good source for WARP?

If I am going to do it, I need to have data back to 04-05 for the players I am using.

Basketball Prospectus has player pages for everyone on its website.

Unfortunately, the available data doesn’t go back that far.

enormous name labels

I wish there was some way to remove the labels, or create a legend.

"LeBron doesn’t guard the other team’s best scorer until crunch-time of games, if at all. ... LeBron spends the vast majority of his time defending a non-threat on the perimeter, leaving him free to roam for weak-side blocks or steals." -John Krolik, Cavs: the blog

You and Me both!

I have dug around trying to figure out how to do just that, to no avail.
