Trade: Gortat for Collison
Collison is never going to play, once Chris Paul comes back, so I think he could be had if the right pieces are offered.
http://games.espn.go.com/nba/tradeMachine?tradeId=yhqt286
ORL:
Incoming: Darren Collison, James Posey
Outgoing: Marcin Gortat, Anthony Johnson, Adonal Foyle
Why they do it: Simple, they get a great young point guard to sure up the second unit. They take on Pose's crappy contract, but hey, you have to give to get. Also, Posey could be a nice situational piece in SVG's offense. Plus, I would think that Foyle gets bought out and returns to Orlando to continue his role as a good locker room guy.
NOR:
Incoming: Marcin Gortat, Anthony Johnson, Adonal Foyle (probably bought out)
Outgoing: Daren Collison, James Posey
Why they do it: Gortat is a great value. By getting him, they can trade Okafor's bad contract to get cap relief. Also, they get more relief by shedding Posey's awful contract. They need to get something for Collison, since his talents will be waste for years if he stays in New Orleans.
Sound like a winner?

Won't happen.
Collison isn’t going anywhere.

NO is cheap.
They are willing to do many things for cap relief, and i’m sure that they would like to shed Posey and Okafor’s contracts.
This allows them to do both, and they can turn Okafor into a valuable piece.

What do you think it would take to get NO to move him?

More than we'd give up right now.
REC’d Eddy. This trade never happens.

Nothing, unless it probably involved getting a superstar to pair with Chris Paul.

This trade would also make sense in the offseason.
Foyle and Johnson wouldn’t be available, but the basic Posey and Collison for Gortat trade could still work, if tweaked to make the trade match up.

heh. When I read the title, I thought you meant Nick.

I would do this trade, but NO has a rookie scale contract on Darren so even tho they’ll be wasting him away, they have no incentive to trade him. They are under the tax this year, not sure about next yr tho.
by derekk on Feb 9, 2010 3:27 PM EST reply actions 0 recs
They should like that kind of deal tho, dumping Mo or Posey for relief or Bass or Gortat. Just no pressure of the lux tax and Darren might be too valueable for it, even with Bass.

There is no incentive for the Hornets to trade Collison and that's where the discussion should end.

I'm sure NO would rather have the younger player on a rookie deal than a veteran (tho just 25) on an MLE deal.

That I understand, but do they want Posey on teh MLE? Or Okafor at 10 million?

Orlando wouldn't want Posey, that's for sure.

I like you thinking.
They trade a back-up PG, to get a Top 10 C. Then trade there current C, for a wing player like Maggette.
Paul, Maggette, Peja,West, Gortat—Not bad..

Knowing George Shinn
He’d probably rather trade Chris Paul than Darren Collison. The latter is cheaper, something that Shinn knows more than anyone. Heck, they tried to literally give Tyson Chandler away.
Not that he’d trade either, just sayin’.
by TheRevTy on Feb 9, 2010 7:17 PM EST reply actions 0 recs
I wouldn't.
You can’t move Paul, he is the better player and seat filler. Only way you trade Paul is if you can steal 2 good players..
-Paul for Gay and Gasol
-Paul for Monta Ellis and Anthony Randolph
You trade Collison for a wing player.
Collison for Gay?

Seat filler?
New Orleans doesn’t exactly have a waiting list for season tickets.
I agree with everything you said, though. Kind of sad that arguably New Orleans’ third best player can only play the same position as their best player.

chris paul is the only reason many of those people go see the hornets
if they moved him for anyone short of lebron james their fans would have no reason to come to games

Big Lady for DJ Augustin? What about Bass for Augustin?
The Boston Celtics and Charlotte Bobcats are discussing a trade centered around Glen Davis and D.J. Augustin, according to league sources.
Based on DJ Augustin rookie stats he would be a good fit in Orlando. Any takers?

The teams discussed Bass/Augustin, but the talks stopped when Charlotte started demanding J.J. Redick be included.
by Ben Q Rock on Feb 9, 2010 8:52 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
that is really really ironic for this fact alone:
JJ gets booed incessantly whenever we play in Charlotte. That would be some kind of comedy if he actually had to play there. (Though i know he never will because Orlando will want to keep him around)

This trade wouldn't work
We already have 3 point guards who get minutes and only 2 centers. If we make this trade we would have 4 points guards (of which none can move up to the 2 man position) and only Dwight Howard inside who might i add often gets fouled out which would force us to put Adonal Foyle in who we only re-signed for his locker room presence. Anyone else think Adonal Foyle being the only back up to a foul prone center would be a bad situation?

Even if they did trade him...
…Collison’s worth more to other teams than he is to us. Rightly or wrongly, people expect Collison to be a starter in this league, and soon. We just need a backup. We don’t need that much trade value sitting on the bench, and Collison wouldn’t be happy with that role either.
It's a good thing Larry Bird's initials weren't MJ. '80s basketball was confusing enough -- Magic Johnson, Michael Jordan, Marles Jarkley, Mominique Jilkins... Makeem Jolajuwon...

Mmmm
If Collison’s going to learn from anyone as a backup, it’s going to be the bet PG in the league.
I can’t see the Hornets trading him until 2011’s offseason – he’ll be better off learning the trade for another year behind Paul.

He killed Rondo the next night.
Lots of teams will be making offers to NO for him at least by this summer.

Golden State players to Magic....
One trade that comes to my mind in order to improve the Magic roster and that is very possible and real due to the fact in salaries is Brandon Bass and AJ to Golden State for CJ Watson and Ronnie Turiaf, this trade would improve the Magic PG position with Watson’s athletism and will give to the Magic the possibility to use the twin towers together (Howard and Gortat) more often, because Turiaf could come from the bench to replace either one. I hope that Otis Smith can read this comment and give me his opinion about it………..

The benefit to Golden State is..........
Besides in get a young and good PF in Brandon Bass, AJ will be an unrestricted free agent after this season, that could help (GS) with their salary cap to get a free agent in the loaded of talent 2010 free agents class.
by roger40 on Feb 13, 2010 2:52 PM EST reply actions 0 recs
No free agents are going to GSW until they fire Nelson. Period.
And if GSW got in a position where is actually needed cap space, they can just waive Watson who will be a RFA. Next year Bass and Turiaf are both $4M.

Read an interesting report about Chris Paul this week
Basically the surgery he had done means his knee’s going to be completely shot in about four or five years, so the Hornets might just want to hang onto Collison and trade Paul before the extent of his injury becomes known – say in two or so years, before the degradation slows him to the point it ruins his value.

I can try and find it
Basically when you remove the meniscus from the knee it causes bone on bone rubbing, which long term is degenerative.
by eltharion_doa on Feb 18, 2010 11:58 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
Found it
My least favorite trend of the No Benjamins Association era: teams twisting the truth about potentially serious injuries so they don’t hurt ticket sales, or because they know the media won’t challenge their stories and call them out afterward. After seeing Boston string Celtics fans along with KG’s bum knee and the Clippers legitimately lie about Blake Griffin’s knee injury, when I heard the Hornets claim CP3 would miss only “four to six weeks” after “minor” knee surgery, my BS Detector started beeping. Especially since we learned that doctors removed Paul’s torn meniscus ligament rather than repairing it.
Intrigued, I asked Will Carroll (the injury expert for Baseball Prospectus and Basketball Prospectus) for his thoughts. Will pointed me toward a piece he wrote about meniscus removal a few years ago. The key section: “One reason teams are so quick to allow this surgery is that the players come back so quickly, usually in a matter of weeks. But … surgeons don’t repair the meniscus in most cases; they just take it out, either in part or in whole depending on the size of the tearing. That leaves the athlete with no shock. Eventually, with the remaining meniscus overstressed and aging, they end up with the bones grinding together. Yes, that’s as bad as it sounds in a game of running and jumping.”
(Hold on, we have to wait for the Hornets fans to clear out that puke from their mouths. Waiting … waiting … OK, we’re good.)
The extrapolation of what it means for Paul’s career and the Hornets’ potential plans is, obviously, my own.
