Orlando Magic News for February 3rd: Dwight Howard's Left Hand and Defense

Orlando Pinstriped Post Photo / Bruce Maddox

  • The story behind my left hand

Orlando Magic center Dwight Howard explains how he developed a soft touch around the basket with both hands, and how it helps his offensive game.

I made three straight left-handed hook shots on Tuesday against Milwaukee when the double-team came from the top side. Then, in the second half when they didn’t double team I could get to the middle of the lane and get to my right-handed hook shot.

  • BDL's Award Tour: February edition

Kelly Dwyer of Ball Don't Lie includes Howard on his list of candidates for this year's Defensive Player of the Year award; he omitted Howard entirely in his last update:

Was I previously a bit too harsh on Howard based on his impact relative to where it was last season? Perhaps. Am I still that way? Perhaps. I'm a sportswriter, after all. Truth isn't always what we're after.

  • MAGIC: Ewing to Coach Sophomores in T-Mobile Rookie Challenge

Magic assistant coach Patrick Ewing will serve as the head coach of the Sophomore squad during the NBA Rookie Challenge & Youth Jam on Friday, February 12th. Toronto Raptors forward Chris Bosh will join Ewing as an assistant.

  • Breaking Down The NBA Trade Deadline, Team By Team

Mike Prada of SB Nation goes through each of the NBA's 30 teams, analyzes their assets and needs, and identifies potential trade partners. An excellent, thorough, well-written piece, and I'm not just saying that because he consulted me before writing the Magic section.

D-12 Scoring vs double’s

I'm similar

Everything my father (who’s left-handed) taught me or I learned naturally, I do left-handed. Everything my mother or uncles taught me (they’re all right-handed), I do right-handed. For baseball, I usually throw right, bat left. In soccer, I’m left-footed. For basketball, my right is my primary ball-handling hand, and I’m more comfortable with my right for lay-ups, but I shoot jumpers left-handed and I’m a left-handed defender (when closing out, I go up with my left hand).

For baseball, I throw right, bat left.

I purposely taught myself to bat left-handed, actually.

I'll argue until my death

that people should use their dominant hands for fine, minutia-like tasks, such as writing and shooting freethrows, because it is just more natural.

So in conclusion, I’m right >:|

I write with my non-dominant hand

So there! :P

If you flop, you're a great defender.

Or maybe not… maybe you’re just a pathetic sissy.

LOL Side Show Bob!!

His Defense is the stuff of LEGENDS!!!

"Memphis then used a pick-and-roll to get Conley free and he drove past Shaquille O'Neal for the go-ahead layup."

He just wants to be different.

Either that, or he loves Bob’s perm.

I don't know.

I agree that Varejao is a DPoY candidate but I can’t put him over Howard. Jon Nichols, himself, stated that he feels Dwight is the best defensive player in the NBA and the numbers certainly show it’s no contest.
