[Brandon] Bass saw action last week against the Cleveland Cavaliers after coach Stan Van Gundy matched him against F J.J. Hickson. Bass hopes it was a sign that he might be called upon in a possible Cavs-Magic playoff series.

"Hopefully, [Van Gundy] feels he has confidence in me in certain situations and against certain teams. By me coming into the game, we took Hickson completely out of the game. He didn't want to play anymore that night."

I may have to watch that again.

Was Hickson really rendered ineffective?

I have memories of Bass actually running into Dwight on defense, so I have a different view…

When the big fella was whistled for his fourth personal foul midway through the third quarter, Stan Van Gundy left Clark Kent alone. And in a phone booth measuring 94 feet across, Dwight Howard used that vote of confidence to transform into his alter ego. - Chris Sheridan

What do you mean, "rendered"?

It's a good thing Larry Bird's initials weren't MJ. '80s basketball was confusing enough -- Magic Johnson, Michael Jordan, Marles Jarkley, Mominique Jilkins... Makeem Jolajuwon...

Taken out of the game, like Bass says.

I mean JJ Hickson barely qualifies as "effective" to begin with.

“Occasionally competent,” maybe. But he’s not a major part of the team’s offense. If Bass is resorting to boasting that Hickson — who’s, what, the Cavs’ no. 5 scoring option overall? — didn’t manage to score much with Bass on the court, the pickings are slim indeed.

(For the record, Hickson shot 2-3 from the field in 13 minutes of action. Bass shot 2-5 in 11 minutes. I don’t know who they were facing on defense during that time, but Bass is correct to point out one thing: JJ Hickson did not manage to make 5 shot attempts during his time on the court.)
