NBA Trade Deadline Open Thread

Well, today is the trade deadline and to spur discussion here on the happenings around the NBA, I decided to create an open thread so that the community can react to trades that have currently occurred and may occur in the next few hours.

Want to discuss deals that have already went down? Want to debate which team got the better of a trade? Want to share trade rumors you've heard? Want to gripe that Orlando Magic general manager Otis Smith isn't making another move? Fire away with your comments.

You can also follow all the goings-on via SB Nation's Trade Deadline StoryStream.

I want the entire team apart from Dwight traded by lunchtime or else!

I hate the Cleveland move as a Magic fan

I dont think it makes them an automatic favorite or anything. and the Magic certainly can still make the finals, but I think its hard to argue jamison doesnt make the cavs better. he doesnt even ruin chemistry as much as someone like amare might have.

on the other hand, as a washington d.c. native, I couldnt be happier for Jamison. I know people say its hard to feel bad for someone who makes as much money as these guys, but as much as someone can "deserve"to go to a contender, jamison did. He was the only consumnate professional left in that organization at this point, and at every game I went to this year, was the only one who gave a consistent effort. I was there for the speech he gave after the Arenas incident, and I was amazed by the fact that he was still that loyal/professional after the organization became such a mess.

You really think he's that good?

I mean, he’s an inefficient shooter and a decent, but not great defender…where are his shots coming from? Does he have the athleticism at his age to stay out with Lewis? He certainly won’t be taking Lewis on the drive and we’ve seen Rashard isn’t a liability as a post defender, at least with Howard helping, that people might think.

OK, he’s at least something of a three point threat but…I dunno. I like him as a player OK but I thought the Cavs were pretty good already. I’m not sure he offers that much of an upgrade…I think it’s a gamble.

by eltharion_doa on Feb 18, 2010 9:10 AM EST up reply actions

I don't know much about other aspects of Jamison's game

But I do know that he is one of the best post players for being a “small” big. He has a great touch around the basket and Rashard is gonna have more trouble with him than the other power forwards he guards.

We can’t double Shaq anymore (at least not with a 4) and we definitely can’t ignore their 4. It’ll be up to Rashard to slow down Antawn by himself, while Dwight is occupied with Shaq. Getting Shaq in early foul trouble should make things a lot easier though.

by bandrewg08 on Feb 18, 2010 9:21 AM EST up reply actions

hes almost mathematic around the basket

I love watching Jamison play because he almost always has the perfect trajectory, release point, and footwork in order to get his shot past the shot-blocker. He is a much better player than his statistics would suggest in DC

by nickswarriors16 on Feb 18, 2010 9:41 AM EST up reply actions

I agree, you described him perfectly

I haven’t seen him play nearly as much as you have, but when I do I’m amazed at how effortless he makes the post game look.

by bandrewg08 on Feb 18, 2010 9:48 AM EST up reply actions

Jamison's problem isn't his touch around the basket but everywhere else.

His mid-range game is inefficient and he’s a decent, but not good, three-point shooter. Don’t get me wrong, he’s going to help the Cavs but if they rely on him too much to be a perimeter shooter, they’re going to have an issue. The last thing Cleveland needs is someone else chucking up long-twos.

Tom Haberstroh of Hoopdata put it best. The question isn’t whether or not Jamison has a perimeter game, it’s whether or not he has an efficient perimeter game. Looking at the numbers, he doesn’t.

the cavs arent going to rely on him in the perimeter.

they have a good perimeter game. they will need him on defense and in the post offensively. both of which he does well, which is what frightens me.

by lugowsky on Feb 18, 2010 5:46 PM EST up reply actions

Need him on defense? Jamison isn't a good defender.

And they’re going to rely on him in the perimeter, that’s why the Cavaliers acquired him.

watching jamison for years

I agree its a gamble. However, Jamisons inefficiency is due as much to the fact that he has no one to help him in Washington as anything else. Also, if youve watched him against the Magic this year, he might play the best defense on Rashard Lewis of anyone in the entire league. He really matches up well with Rashard, so that is worrisome.

by nickswarriors16 on Feb 18, 2010 9:39 AM EST up reply actions

I don't understand the comments about Jamison's supposed inefficiency.

Jamison is a career 45-46% shooter. He may be an average (but not inefficient) 3-point shooter, but that’s not a huge part of his game.

by gift of the magi on Feb 18, 2010 10:26 AM EST up reply actions

His TS% is in the low 50s

Same range as guys like Drew Gooden and Udonis Haslem as PFs, and before you point to the team as being the reason for that – it’s not like the Clippers or even the Heat are exactly loaded with good quality shooters to take the pressure off.

He’s also top ten at his position in usage rate, which might have been fine with the Wizards, but he won’t get that much of the ball with the Cavs and that will drop his stats because, guess what, he’s not particularly efficient…

by eltharion_doa on Feb 18, 2010 11:37 AM EST up reply actions

I always thought it was funny

how Cleveland wanted the “stretch 4” after last year’s loss to us. I really like Jamison and he helpls them, but I still think the Magic match up very well against them and it should be a good series if we meet in the playoffs.

That's if he doesn't still get traded to NY

I’ve read that if he’s still in Sacramento after the deadline, he’ll get bought out. Then his preferences are for a title contender, specifically LA or CLE.

McDyess is in the market, Spurs wants expiring contracts

He can defend, rebound and shoot 15 footers. He can atleast contain Hickson, Flappajao and even POWE who is returning from injury which is another bully for offensive rebound.

Not that he’s a big threat or anything. They just have yet another 6 hacks they can use on Dwight.

Anyway. McDyess would be nice, but who would we trade for him? Trading Bass wouldn’t make sense. AJ and Foyle? Maybe, but McDyess still won’t get much playing time anyway.

Pointless move.

McDyess wouldn’t play. The Magic might as well keep Bass in that scenario.

Jamison to Cleveland doesn’t bother me, I’m just glad Otis has stayed firm and not made any moves. The team is finally starting to gel, in particular the starting unit, and could really do some damage come playoff time. Adding another piece to a completed jigsaw doesn’t make a prettier picture.

by Ezy on Feb 18, 2010 9:48 AM EST reply actions

I dont like the Jamison trade....but for other reasons....

I know that Jamison may be a nice fit and it is going to be on Rashard’s shoulders to become a better defender on the 4 now…but who in their right mind thinks Shaq is going to be able to keep up with Dwight….who do the Cavs have as a big man in the middle other than him? Shaq is playing well….for about 20 minutes a game…then who comes in after that? Varejao? Hickson? In the famous words of Chad OchoCinco….CHILD PLEASE!!!!

There is no other center on the Cavs roster other than Shaq…The next tallest player is Varejao at 6’11….when Shaq leaves….who guards Dwight? The mismatch problems for the Cavs will continue…

If anybody disagrees with this reasoning please let me know….dont want to be a rambling idiot but there has to be somebody who thinks this also…

Their hoping Z will be bought out of Washington

and resign to Cleveland after 30 days. So basically they just traded their 1st round pick for Jamison. That is if Z wont sign with other teams. But the thought of winning a championship and being loyal to Cleveland would make him come back to there.

I am mostly speaking in jest, of course, but . . .

The Wizards actually does need a legit center to finish out the year for them since they traded away Brendan Haywood . . . plus they aren’t actually paying 11.5 million for his services, but a pro-rated 4.4 million (roughly) to finish out the year.

The Wizards have a need, and I cannot think of a young center on their team that needs developing (I could be wrong because I don’t follow their team that closely), so they could really use Z.

except for the fact that it has nothing to do with the trade, big Z is coming back in 30 days rendering your point irrelevant

by nickswarriors16 on Feb 18, 2010 9:58 AM EST up reply actions

I agree that no one can really guard Dwight

But I think what the trade does is allow Varejao to play the 5 more (even when they get Z back). That gives them 3 bigs to guard Dwight all game, or in other words, 18 fouls to hack Dwight. Even though none of them can stop him, the 3 of the combined can frustrate him with all the fouls they can use. Really, the only guy who can stop Dwight is himself, and when he gets frustrated, it’s bad.

I see it as their counter to us adding another guy to slow down Lebron (Barnes). We have 3 guys we can throw at him (MP, Barnes, VC somewhat) and that is the best way to guard him. By keeping fresh legs on him all game.

by bandrewg08 on Feb 18, 2010 9:59 AM EST up reply actions

The thing that scares me..

They’ve got alot of bigs. And we only got 2. Not to mention Dwight can’t stop committing stupid fouls. If he got foul plagued eveytime. We will be in deep SHIT!!

by zakchi on Feb 18, 2010 10:04 AM EST up reply actions

This has been touched on, somewhat, but Dwight Howard is the key.

That’s the only clear-cut matchup advantage the Magic have and it needs to be exploited. Howard’s defense can’t be overstated, either, because he forces the Cavaliers to shoot a lot of jumpers.

MIke Brown doesn't even do the majority of the "coaching"

He’s basically a guy who makes Lebron feel good abut all the shots he has to take for the cavs to be successful. The cavs use a offensive coordinator if you will that draws up most of the plays during the timeouts (I think his name is Kenny Natt but I could be wrong). MB is just a guy who whines to the referees about anyone who touches Lebron and deflects attention away from him. IMO he’s the most overrated coach in the NBA and has been since Cleveland drafted Lebron.

Yes, but in this discussion, we were referring to the coaching of Mike Brown and his inability to adapt to the changes in strategy that SVG emplored.

Despite the bad coaching, LeBron nearly won the series all by himself. Better coaching adjustments would have won the Cavs the series last year IMO. Luckily, that didn’t happen.

See, I still think last year proves that coaching did make a difference.

Yes, LeBron still carried the team on his broad shoulders despite the coaching, but it wasn’t enough against a team with a better coach who was willing/able to make adjustments as the series went along. LeBron can counteract some of the issues with Mike Brown’s lack of talent, and that is fine against inferior teams, but not against the likes of the Magic or Lakers. He is still only one man, despite his superhuman efforts. Coaching and talent can overcome even LeBron!

Coaching made a difference.

But that’s not why the Cavaliers lost the series. What I’m trying to state, and I’m doing it poorly, is that despite all of the Magic’s advantages, James made it irrelevant. The series was a toss-up until Game 6. People talk about how Orlando was close to sweeping Cleveland and that’s true. But a similar thing can be said about the Cavs.

The Jamison trade doesn't really bother me.

Without a doubt, they got better.

However, as long as we don’t double Shaq we’ll be fine. If we play them straight up they’re going to turn into the “Watch Lebron Dribble” Cavaliers. The problem comes when you double Shaq, then Lebron gets to become the point guard and get other players involved.

Make Shaq’s 350 lb behind work. Make him work on the offensive end to score against Dwight. Make him work on the defensive end trying to guard Dwight. Make him run up and down the court. Wear him out. That’s the best way to play him in my opinion.

The thing that pisses me off is, the Cavs traded a stick of Juicy Fruit gum and a old blackberry charger for Jamison. The got him for free.

We can still beat the Cavs, with or without Jamison.

Thats best-case scenario with the picks, because 2011 is top 1 protected, and maybe more around 8 (im completely guessing btw lol), and the 2010 is Top 5 protected, and depending where the franchise is, could not be Houston’s, or maybe another 8-ish. But still, look at that, its like two picks around 8-10-ish, maybe alil higher or alil lower, AND Jordan Hill to take Landry’s void behind Scola now, AND Kevin Martin who will be an amazing fit with the team, especially when Yao/Scola are on next year. I know Cleveland took Jamison for nothing basically, but Houston got a ton of young players there! Thats the steal deal of the year.

Rumored to be a 3-way

Wash, Miami and Utah, with Ilgauskas as a part.

Like I said before

Houston came up.

"It was not a fun conversation," Ferry said. "But he was very professional, just like you'd expect."

He is talking about Big Z…..so is it possible he may not return to the Cavs…or am I just reading to much into it..

"He is fast, but what I like about him is he looks like one of those track guys that actually knows how to run the ball and has good vision and patience. He is not just running at top speed. He knows when to use his speed, and he has some power and toughness, too.'' Barry Sanders about CJ2K

I can’t beleive GS declined Ellis for OJ Mayo offer. I think the Magic should take a long hard look at that in the next… 20 minutes lmao.

By the way there was a radio show rumor about Otis tempting NJ to trade CLee back here, but nothing about it since then and alas the deadline is nearly upon us. Radio show rumors aren’t exactly high on the list of legit sources either. Our team is justly set for a title run as is but getting CLee wouldve been very nice.

That would be legit

but even CDR would be nice. They would have to expand the game to 60 minutes in order for these guys to get minutes.

CDR would have been a bad fit.

I have no clue what Magic had to give up if CLee was on the table. JJ and/or Bass and/or AJ would make sense.

We'd have to take some crap back

To get the salaries to match up. Lee’s only on $1.2m – Bass and Redick combined would be $6.8m, whilst even Dad is paid too much for a straight swap (not that the Nets would consider that).

I love Lee, but he’s not as good as Redick, to be brutally honest. We’d have to get a very solid extra piece for the deal to be worthwhile, and we’d at best be treading water with anything the Nets could give us – hardly seems worth it for the chemistry disruption.

Funny and ironic how Steve Francis and TMac, centerpieces in a blockbuster trade earlier this decade, both made it to the New York Knicks in crap err cap relief moves. Good riddance…at least I don’t have to hear about TMac to the Magic rumors on OPP anymore.
