Dwight's Continued Struggles

"Orlando's "Big Three": Dwight Howard, Rashard Lewis and Vince Carter combined to score only 24 points on 8-for-31 shooting against the Chicago Bulls. That's only one point more than Matt Barnes scored for the Magic by himself. Matt Barnes! Not surprisingly, Orlando lost. Sure, Vinsanity left early with a sprained ankle, but he was 3-for-15 at the time, so it's not like he was lighting it up before he hobbled away.

An extra-wet rasberry goes to "Superman," who finished with only 9 points on 3-for-7 shooting against the All-Star defense of...Brad Miller. Yup. Once Joakim Noah got into foul trouble, Vinny Del Negro sicced Miller on Howard in single coverage and it totally worked. That's right.
Brad Miller shut down Dwight Howard, basically by putting a big body on him and forcing him to score using a little thing called skill. Only Dwight doesn't really have a whole lot of that going for him. It has become painfully, even shamefully apparent that Howard's offense can be negated by big centers who play him physically (Miller, Kendrick Perkins, etc.).

If Dwight really wants to be the best center in the league, he can't afford to get shut down by guys like Brad Miller. I mean seriously."

IMHO, this could not be more accurate. Doubt is starting to creep into my mind concerning Dwight's future. If anything, he has regressed this season. His offense has been 100% laughable.

I don't care what anyone says about this but....

even though he had a trainer work out with him all summer, he shouldve stopped tweeting so damn much. Also, filming movies, doing video games, eating out, goofing off, etc. It’s his responsibility to deliver for his team, not the media.

Where’s the midrange J we saw on Twitvid? Where’s the 70% FT shooting? IDK, but I sure know what he eats for lunch, SMH.

Midrange J?

The video was nice and all but I’d settle for a baseline spin at this point. I swear, he doesn’t make ANY semblance of a move if the opposing center is bodying him up. He dribbles until the double-team comes, half freaks out and makes a shaky pass to the 3 pt. line, re-posts and either dunks (which rules every time), misses an and-1 (dude has a .007% finish-rate), gets stripped (most frequent), or takes a 2-step running hook. I don’t get it. 2 years ago, he was spinning on the baseline and looking like he could run circles around anyone. Now he’s slower, he looks less confident than ever, and has completely abandoned every post move in favor of the running hook. I realize that nitpicking the best center in basketball is kinda dumb, but this has frustrated me to the point of madness.

hmmm..

Kobe worked with Hakeem this summer. Dwight did movies..

You can usually tell what players worked hard over the summer. Dwight doesn’t appear to be one of them.

Wouldn't be an issue

If D12’s numbers weren’t down.

Look at Bosh, he is having a career season. Pts and Rebs are up, Dwight is the exact opposite both are down.

So if you are not playing well and it appears you didn’t improve during the off-season, people are going to questin you.

You can’t compare a regular Joe who has 40 year career to NBA guy with 10 yr career. I work 9-10 hours a day 11 months a year, D12 isn’t working that much.

Dwight's scoring is down because his usage rate is the lowest it's been since 2005/06

And his rebounding rate of 21.8% leads the league and matches his figure from last year… which also led the league. And the year before that, his 21.7% led the league.

Rebounding isn’t the issue. Offense is, and a lot of it has to do with reduced touches, about which he can only do so much.

Your telling me D12 is a better player than he was last year? Because that’s is the problem. If you watch the game D12s moves look the exact same as last yrs, yet his stats are down. I have said it all over this blog FEED THE BEAST. But the point that his game hasn’t progressed is true and when a young players game doesn’t progress you question the off season.

I know rebounding is fine.

why is it..

So hard for d12 to get the ball? Never have I seen a super star struggle with touches. Svg is a good coach, but this issue is on him.

but it is...

because they ARE down. and his post game (or lack thereof) is somehow worse than before.

by Snyde on Jan 5, 2010 8:33 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

On a per-36-minute basis, Howard's numbers aren't that much worse than last year

The number of shots he gets is way down, from 12.5 to 9.3, but his FG% has actually risen from .572 to .613. His FT% is exactly the same. His rebound rate is down 0.1 rebounds per 36 minutes, and his assist rate and steal rate are both up. His block rate’s down from 2.9 to 2.6, but that’s still above his career average. The two things that he could be legitimately criticized for are that his turnover and foul rates are up. The scoring being down? That’s because he’s getting 74% of the shots he got last year. That’s more on his teammates and the coaching than it is on Dwight. When you adjust for minutes, Dwight looks very similar this year to how he looked last year.

I'm usually a pretty big stat guy

But in this case, what’s wrong with Dwight doesn’t seem to be showing up on the stat sheet. He looks slow. He’s getting out hustled by guys who have a fraction of his talent. His help defense is off. He’s not blocking shots he should be. He’s rotating slowly, he’s not moving his feet. He’s forcing the ball offensively. He’s getting frustrated way, way too easily with refereeing. He’s associating playing hard with playing nasty – he’s going AT people instead of using his skill and athleticism to negate them.

He just doesn’t look good right now. Half a step slow, not quite mentally there…however you want to put it, in this case, it’s the eyes that don’t lie…he’s not playing well.

He didn't get the ball much in the second half.

It wasn’t so much about Brad Miller because he WAS getting doubled once he stepped closely into the paint. This post is not accurate.

by fwedo on Jan 4, 2010 12:34 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

that may be true...

but i’m talking big picture here. i see regression and frankly, it scares me. no shake, no smoothness, no spins, no rolls to the basket where he is at his best…

i’m not one to say the offseason “fun” has hurt his game, but i’m starting to think he needs to spend a summer with The Dream because if this is what 3+ years of tutelage under Patrick does to his offensive game…I think he’s complete used up that resource.

by Snyde on Jan 4, 2010 12:46 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

I don't see regression, not in the numbers.

I do agree that Hakeem would do wonders with Dwight, though.

d12 has regressed and maybe because of a lack of focus during the summer and this season

I'm just going to repeat this comment from now on.

Howard hasn’t regressed, he just hasn’t gotten the ball enough on offense. To accuse him of a lack of focus during the summer and this season is off-based, given that he had two trainers with him everywhere he went in the off-season. Likewise, I’ve seen him with my own eyes at practices working on his game.

not seeing the practice you witnessed translate in the progression of his game..

So people questioning his work ethic seems valid.

the point of the post wasn't to bash his work ethic

it’s just to state that what i’m seeing with my eyes is offensive regression. he’s never had a great post game but he definitely would try a move or 2 here and there. dude doesn’t even pump fake anymore. he follows the exact same procedure every time he gets the ball in the low post. back down for 2 dribbles, pass out (while half-freaking out), re-post, running hook, look happy if it goes in, whine like a little girl if it doesn’t. to watch run-of-the-mill nobodies follow this and strip him with ease just bugs me. sometimes its so easy to time the strip it just baffles me.

by Snyde on Jan 5, 2010 8:40 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

I still disagree that he's regressed offensively.

He hasn’t gotten better, but that’s it.

The main issue is that he’s not getting the ball enough. Like others have said, that’s not entirely his fault. Howard is a center, not a guard or forward so it’s not as easy for him to get the basketball on nearly every possession (he can’t dribble up the court). His per minutes aren’t very different, though.

Agreed — Dwight hasn’t improved offensively + he hasn’t regressed offensively. He just isn’t as involved in the offense, isn’t being used as a go-to scorer as much as he was last season.

Less touches and shot attempts equals less scoring. If Dwight got the ball more often, similar to last season, he’d be producing at a similar clip (points per game) to last season.

……………………………………………………………………………..

I actually prefer Dwight in this slightly smaller role offensively. I think it’ll help Orlando’s offense once they match up against someone like Boston in the playoffs.

Once Vince gets more comfortable, and more effective, and as Jameer Nelson gets back to his best, Orlando’s offense should take off with Dwight in this lesser role.

lol Miller didn’t do anything spectacular defensively besides foul Dwight. So it’s pretty tough to get going if he’s going to get hacked every night. I really don’t know what many people expect a big man to have as far as offensive moves with their back to the basket…He’s not “The Dream”, He’s not “Patrick Chewing”, he’s Dwight Howard and his strengths are Defense, Rebounding, Dunking and Collapsing a Defense that opens up the 3 point game for the Magic. He’s slowly adding to his Offense. The fact is that just because Dwight posted a video of his mid range J, doesn’t mean that SVG is going to run plays for Dwight to get himself a mid range shot. It’s not how the offense runs for the Magic and I really don’t think SVG wants to add that. He’s a pro basketball player, I’m pretty sure he can face up and sink a shot but it’s completely different and takes longer than a summer to bring out something like that and make it consistently in an NBA game where the coach will feel confident enough to run plays. That would be like wanting to try out Redick’s new post up moves in the middle of a season where every possession counts. Some fans really need to lay off of Dwight, he may not have the crisp offensive moves but he’s improved since coming into the league and he’s going to continue to get better. Teams are playing him differently and are resorting to hack-a-dwight and so far it’s been working. It’s frustrating him and taking him out of rhythm. The man’s got a sweeping hook shot, a spin move, he’s the best offensive rebounder in the league, the best defensive player in the league and where he makes his money is on the defensive side of the ball. I’ll take that over Brad Miller, Kendrick Perkins, Rasheed Wallace and any other Center in the League.
Who care’s what the man does on his free time?? So when you’re off of work, should your customers criticize you for spending too much time reading sports blogs and not enough time mastering your job skills? lol he’s human and just like everyone else he needs time to himself. It’s pretty obvious that he kept in shape, and he worked during the offseason.
The real issue here is not his offense, but his passing. With so many double teams he gets, he’s going to have to get better at passing out of the post. But he’s even worked on that as well, though it’s not great yet. He’s found a cutting Barnes plenty of times and he doesn’t get many assists because there’s usually one or two passes more around the three point line before a shot is taken. You guys need to pay more attention to the game than just the stats. Tally how many shots Dwight alters or intimidates without even having to jump, add that to his blocks for the game and it’s what can be the difference between a win and a loss. When he improves his passing and free throw shooting the points are going to come easier for the team.
All in all, I don’t really think Dwight is struggling offensively, I think he’s letting the teams get into his head and allowing them to frustrate him. It’s a good thing that when he’s not getting touches and having a bad night, he’s still playing hard defensively so give the man some credit.

Howard hasn't regressed, he just hasn't gotten the ball enough on offense.

His per minute numbers are nearly the same from last year to this year.

He hasn’t improved. The same D12 isn’t enough. For a superstar if ur not improving, your going backwards. Why is every other superstar improving? Lebron, carmelo, kobe, Durant.

Even if Howard gets 5 more shot attempts per game, does anyone here really think he'll try different post moves from what he's been doing?

Those post moves haven’t been working out to well lately against physical centers.

Maybe he tenses up during games and doesn’t want to try any other moves he’s been working on. Who knows?

I did see him make 2 pump fakes during the Chicago game, something I haven’t seen him do ALL SEASON!!!!!
