Orlando Magic News for January 22nd: More Trade Rumblings and Team Assessments
-
NBA AM: Hands Off Devin Harris
Steve Kyler of HOOPSWORLD refutes Chad Ford's report that the Magic are looking to trade for Tracy McGrady. He also characterizes the Magic's chances of making a trade before the deadline as "unlikely." But he adds the following caveat:The scenario to watch is the status of Chris Bosh, Carlos Boozer and Amar'e Stoudemire – should either of those three really be made available – and none are at this point – don't be surprised to see Magic GM Otis Smith get after that caliber of player and offer a real asset to get one of them.

Recapturing the Magic
With this entry, Kevin Pelton of Basketball Prospectus joins the many NBA writers who have tried to figure out what's wrong with the Magic. The main problems are on offense, Pelton says. Click through for the three top factors in Orlando's decline. Top-notch work, as usual. -
The Magic announced two minor changes to their schedule today. Their game against the New Orleans Hornets on February 26th has moved to 9:30 PM on ESPN. Meanwhile, ESPN has dropped the Magic's game against the Wizards on April 7th, so tipoff moves from 8 PM to 7 PM.

I am not sure which one would help here the most.
I don’t like Boozer, I know that.

I don't know if I like any of them.
Boozer is a self absorbed douchebag, Bosh wants to be the man on whatever team he plays for, and Amare has spent the past couple of years acting like a superstar without producing like one.

Excellent points.
Boozer only steps up when there’s money to be made or a contract to go after, and Stoudemire’s too fragile with injuries at times. I’ve always liked Bosh, but he, along with the other two, isn’t known for being a great, or even good, defensive player. I think I’d still take Bosh though, just to have that talent.

Bosh plays the majority of his minutes at C for the Raptors, which exposes him defensively.
Put him at PF and I think he’d be okay.

Well, no one cares about that.
It’s about what they do on the court and only Bosh would make sense for the Magic. Boozer and Stoudemire wouldn’t be great fits for Orlando, considering their defense and their play styles.

I happen to be allergic to self absorbed douchebags, but yeah, you have a point.
As far as Amare goes, I was referring to his on-court production. He’s got all the tools to be a superstar, but not the mentality to be consistently great. I have absolutely no empirical evidence to back me up on my assertion about Bosh, but I doubt he wants to be anything less than the first option on offense.

Yeah
My Comment. “I don’t Like Boozer” was the Pinstripe Post approved opinion
And it matters to me I can’t Cheer for A D-Bag.
See Francis, Steve.

No need to call them d-bags, just say you don't like them and move on.

Get Bosh please.
Damn… I haven’t talked about this since last year, but I really think Bosh and Dwight would be a championship duo. It pays to have great big men, look at Boston and LA, the past two champions.
Dwight and Bosh would be unstoppable down low. Bosh has every skill in the high and low posts, while Dwight can destroy in the low post and is improving. They are both great passers so Im positive they will learn to play with each other very well, plus they can really feed of each other and get tons of putbacks.
I think they’d make a great defense too, Bosh has the height and active nature to always be defending hard. Look at how much Rashard improved on defense by playing with Dwight, so imagine that with Bosh instead.
I also think one of the reasons Orlando got in on the 4-way without gaining much besides the TPE was because incase they want to try and pry Bosh from them later on. They have established a trade connection there, and Orlando can probably add some great things to it like Gortat, Bass, JJ, Ryan, picks, (crazy side thought: wouldn’t be crazy to imagine them maybe want to give Turk back, but they also may have reason to believe Turk would be much more important too). I think something could be there later on, in getting Bosh to Orlando.
I also am actually pretty open to Carlos Boozer too. I don’t think he’s as good as Bosh or anything, but the effect of getting him could be almost just as good as I imagine Bosh with Dwight. And Boozer is not a bad defender, especially if he’s with Dwight. I really think a Boozer and Dwight pairing would work very well.
The only guy I’m not as interested in is Amar’e. His defense is so bad that even pairing with Dwight wouldn’t do very much I think. His offense may be too much too, and I dont like it at the efficiency and levels of Bosh and Boozer. I see him as wanting to score 30 a night, even if he were in Orlando. Bosh and Boozer would be much easier seeing working with Dwight to make sure they both stay very effective together and can settle for 20 and 10-ish if they are working well together and winning games.

Bosh would be the only one of any intrigue.
Boozer and Stoudemire wouldn’t be great fits with the Magic, especially considering their defense.

It would deftly be Bosh by faaaaar over the others, but I really think Boozer could work out, esp. if we dont lose much. Amare I don’t see it right now.

By the way, I remember you saying Jamison would be a nice fit for Orlando. Imagine if it was Bosh instead tho… drool :P

+1 to the Jamison Idea
Decent guy he seems to be.

He'd be a good fit for the way the team plays, even though his defense is lacking.

Concerning the Magic,
I also pretty much agree with Kevin Pelton in his article, but I think it’s slowly improving and will get much better later on.

Pelton's article was similar to what I wrote earlier in the week.
And even before then, when I suggested Redick as a starter and Carter as a sixth-man.

Bosh would be a HUGE addition, paired w/ Howard, who would the Magic have to give up inorder for a trade like that to materialize? Do you think Lewis would be an option? with Anderson and Bass being a much cheaper version, would anyone in their right mind take on a contract like that? Other than Carter, who else is trade bait material?
by Hassanali181 on Jan 22, 2010 9:59 PM EST reply actions 0 recs
There are so many variants. We’d have to get an idea from Toronto. There endless possibilities the more I look at it. Best ones would be involving Rashard or Carter tho I think, but they may be less likely scenarios too.

There is no way the Magic get Bosh
First off, no team would take Rashard for FREE since his contract is humongous and ridiculous. Gortat/Bass are also overpaid, so i highly doubt anyone would trade an EXPIRING contract of someone who is DEFINITELY worth it, like Bosh, for bloated contracts no one wants extending 5+ years in some cases.
The Lakers got Gasol for what SEEMED like crap but really wasn’t. Memphis is FAR better off making that trade. But the idea behind the trade for Memphis was rebuilding. They got Gasol younger brother, Marc. They also shed a huge amount of salary and made their team worse which meant higher draft picks in the future (gay/OJ).
In this case it is completely backwards. Bosh has the expiring contract. Bass/Gortat/Rashard/VC all have bloated contracts which are not expiring. Why would any team make a ridiculous trade like any of the ones listed above for a stud like Bosh? It makes ZERO sense. If i was Toronto, i would rather keep Bosh even if i thought he would be leaving at the end of the year. I would rather take the cap room than take bloated and ridiculous contracts like Gortat/Bass/Rashard/VC.
to tell you the truth, the only player out of those 4 that i would take for FREE, is Bass and that’s barely. The others have horrible contracts that no one would want. Especially for a stud expiring contract like Bosh.
I think the only way that Toronto gives up Bosh is for Dwight in replacement. A sign and trade, Bosh for Dwight. I see no other possible way for Bosh to be traded to Orlando. Toronto would have to be out of their minds.
by plyka on Jan 22, 2010 11:02 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
The reason “bloated” contracts make sense is because if they let Bosh expire, they still have no cap room now or the foreseeable future.
by derekk on Jan 22, 2010 11:23 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
Dwight will not be traded for anything short of LeBron.
Even suggesting it is silly. What Toronto might end up accepting as a trade offer ultimately depends on how desperate they are and what kind of offers they get in return. The Magic can’t offer anything of equal value to Toronto, but typically if a superstar is traded, unless another superstar is involved you’re not going to get equal value. Toronto might end up having to accept 60 cents on the dollar for Bosh, which would play into the hands of any potential suitor.
Also, Gay was acquired before the Gasol trade.

I'll add that Bass and Gortat don't have bloated contracts.
This is like a game you and I play. You come up with these elaborate essays filled with inaccurate assertions and opinions, then I come in to prove you wrong using facts and figures, then you don’t respond. So pardon me if I decide to sit this round out because this is getting really old really quick.

It'd be nearly impossible to acquire Bosh.
Gortat has BYC (plus he has to accept the trade), which makes him practically unmovable for a year. The Magic have assets, but the team can’t afford to gut its roster for one player in the middle of the season.

I'm glad Kyler points out the obvious regarding McGrady.
Kyler points out what I’ve been saying ever since TMac became available…there was far too much venom thrown at the DeVos family and even Magic fans from McGrady to warrant a return even it is a cap clearing move. A lot of people on this site have been saying that McGrady coming back makes sense etc, but they forget the human aspect. The guy is seriously a persona non gratta in this town and on that franchise, no matter what Otis says. Shaq has a better chance at coming back then TMac does. To see what I’m saying, all you have to do is look at the Francis trade to New York. Penny Hardaway was waived faster than you can say Amway, and the only reason they even accepted that trade was because they were getting rid of a problem and Ariza was thrown in. I’ll say it again…TMAC WILL NEVER PLAY FOR THE MAGIC AGAIN.
Spreading that Calgary Flames, Montreal Expos, The U, and Orlando Magic love.
