Poll: List Your Orlando Magic All-Decade Team

Many writers, including John Hollinger of ESPN.com and Kevin Pelton of Basketball Prospectus, have revealed their who's who list of the decade's best players in the NBA and such. But before I reveal the top Orlando Magic player of the decade at each position in a write-up on Monday, I wanted the community to chime in with its opinion.

List your All-Decade team (2 guards, 2 forwards, 1 center).

Players can be selected without regard for a specific position. Have fun.

McGrady at G, Turkoglu and Lewis at F, and Howard at C are no-brainers. The last guard slot is where it gets interesting.

Jameer Nelson and Darrell Armstrong are both worthy of consideration. Nelson’s played in more games this decade and has that whole All-Star thing going for him, but Armstrong won two awards of his own and became a fan-favorite. You can’t read a comments section here without stumbling on a few pleas to trade Nelson. Those facts have absolutely no bearing on who they are as players, but in terms of lasting impact—a worthy consideration in a franchise’s All-Decade team—it could make the difference.

I considered Grant Hill over Turkoglu, but Turk played in nearly twice as many games in one less season (!) and put up eerily similar numbers: 15.8 points, 4.6 rebounds, and 3.7 assists for Turk compared to 16.4, 5.0, and 3.1 for Hill. So if it’s a wash statistically, the slot has to go with the guy who played more often, right? (Yes, games played is a statistic, but you see what I’m trying to say here)

See I thought about that...

But to me Darrell’s best season was the lockout season of 99 when he was sixth man, MIP and leading scorer coming off the bench. For being just outside the decade I put him out of the starting lineup, but essientally placed the core Heart & Hustle team along with Mike MIller on the bench for that 99-2000 run.

my most memorable team

PG: Jerryl Sasser
SG: Reece Gaines
SF: Jeremy Richardson
PF: Pat Garrity
C: Pat Burke

I think that I could comfortably say that this team would destroy in any YMCA rec league in the entire county.

bahaha except they wouldn't

since sasser and gaines would take too many bad shots and play bad defense.

In that vein:

PG: Dee Brown
SG: Reece Gaines
SF: Stacey Augmon
PF: Terence Morris
C: Andrew DeClercq

This might be the no-offense team. The per-36 minute averages for these guys during their Magic careers:
Brown 9.0 pts
Gaines 6.8 pts
Augmon 9.1 pts
Morris 6.6 pts
DeClercq 9.0 pts

That’s an awesome combined 40.5 points per 36 minutes.

This is more clearcut than I originally thought.

Jameer, T-Mac, Hedo, Rashard, and Dwight. I thought about Gordan Giricek but nahhhhhh.

Considering 1999-2000 to 2008-2009, the difference of games played by Jameer and Darrell is just of 12 games (8 regular season and 4 playoff games), Darrell playing one less season. This way, the number of games has no impact at all.

I guess it depends on

Whether we should base the decision on (a) the most talented Magic players who were active from 2000-2009, and base it on how they played when they were at the top of their game, or (b) the most prolific contributors over the decade as a whole.

McGrady and Armstrong at G and Howard at C are my picks no matter what. But if we’re going with (a), I’d say: Armstrong/McGrady/Hill/Lewis/Howard. And if we’re going with (b), I’d say: Armstrong/McGrady/Turkoglu/Lewis/Howard.

Hill in his prime was more talented than Turkoglu, but Hill was injured too often to contribute in a major way. Jameer is a natural talent, and tremendously exciting player to watch (and one of my favorite current Magic players), but Armstrong’s contributions over the years are consistently within the Magic’s top 10 in many categories, both offensively and defensively.

i ask the same question you did.....what is our guage?

those are in my opinion the best players at those positions……..i am actually torn between hedo and grant hill………the grant hill experiment left such a bad taste in my mouth i just can’t put him in front of hedo…..

and does armstrong qualify??

I don't get it, either.

Carter was a great player, no doubt, but that was with the Raptors and the Nets.
