Off-Day Open Thread: What Do You Want to See From the Orlando Magic in the Next Few Games?
With the Orlando Magic's NBA Finals rematch with the Los Angeles Lakers looming tomorrow night, as well as games against the Indiana Pacers, Sacramento Kings, and Charlotte Bobcats taking place during the week, I wanted to ask the community a simple question.
The game against the Lakers will officially mark the half-way point in the regular season and at this juncture, the team - whether it's the coaches or the players - is in the business of looking for solutions to problems it's been dealing with these past few weeks.
What do you want to see from the Magic in the next six days or so?
Feel free to chime in with your thoughts in the comments section below.

I would like to see a line-up change
I think Jameer and VC should come off the bench. I think by having them come off the bench, we might be able to get the jump on the other team. I think the energy will be higher because Jwill moves the ball so quick, JJ is just pumped to get playing time and Barnes is always high energy. I think that Rashard and Dwight would feed off of that high energy and get pumped too. Other than that, I just want them to actually look like they care and they actually want to win!
The issue with starting Jason Williams, though, is that he's 34.
When J-Will was filling in for Jameer Nelson earlier in the year, he started to break down with the additional minutes. Like Ben said elsewhere, if Williams could handle the load, then maybe there’s an argument.

What happened to the the Orlando Magic?
Earlier in the season when players were down due to injury and suspension, the Orlando Magic showed more toughness and willingness to do anything to win. Now, it seems they are lost. Absolutely no chemistry. Maybe they should watch their wins a Boston, Atlanta, and Toronto (no Shard, Vince,or Lewis), and realize they wanted to win more then, than now. Offensive struggles have nothing to do with way they are losing. Matt Barnes said it best, saying the team doesn’t have any heart. They have a turn the cheek mentality, rather than a eye for an eye. I would love to see the Magic be the bully for once.
I think, sometimes, the Magic take all of the talent on the team for granted.
Orlando doesn’t try because it knows it’s so good, but unfortunately, the team just can’t show up and win.

Dwight and the J
I wanna see Dwight take 2-3 jumpshots every game. you can make them during practice but taking it to the court is different. the more jumpshots he takes during games the better he will get at them, and if he can shoot 2-3 the rest of the way out per game in the season, he could perfect it come postseason. also this jumpshot could add the pumpfake and drive, and with his athletism if dwight gets by you he has the opportunity to finish. i saw the pumpfake against denver the other day and Nene fell for it, so i think dwight can shoot more jumpers
Yeah, Howard should take a few jumpers here and there to mix things up offensively for himself.
That way Dwight adds another element to his game on offense that will make the defense think more.

a few things....
The magic more than anything need to get Dwight the ball more. Even if he is not scoring, we need to get him the ball to work that inside-out game that seems to be lacking somewhat of late.
Also, the magic need to be proactive in their play rather than reactive. Too many times have I seen the team drop their heads and change their style of play after going behind. The magic need to dictate the flow of the game, not let it be dictated by the opposition.
Finally, I hate to say it, but I think carter should play off the bench. He can still get his minutes (or close to) as sixth man, especially in late game situations, but I really think the starting unit works better with JJ on the court. This goes hand in hand with Dwight getting the ball more. The way it is at the moment there are too many scorers, not enough role players in the starting 5.
I still think the starters should stay put (except for maybe Barnes), but I agree with everything else you said.

defense, desire, and dedication. Also to use your signature, “The second unit is kind of crazy because the second unit is only white guys.” – Marcin Gortat. Use the second unit more until Howard, Lewis, Carter and Nelson get their heads on and start playing again. As good as they are or think they are, they are really embarrassing themselves, their team and if you run with a skunk long enough you are going to smell like one. It rubs off and effects the whole team. If Van Gundy does not know what to do, then seeya. We talk about All stars, well they are “has beens”. They were All Stars but only Howard has a chance of making the list this year.
Van Gundy is trying but it ultimately falls on the players.
Namely, the four All-Stars.

Effort and energy.
Oh, and hitting some open shots again would be nice.
If the Magic play like it has lately, it won't be much of a game.

Quit with the smiles..
and goofyness.I’d like to see some anger in their play, don’t want to see a smile even when they score. I’d love to see them come out like caged animals! Show some pride
I'd like to see Vince Carter passing.
He’s forcing far too many shots and it’s leading to his worst ever field goal percentage. Other player’s shooting is down because of how much VC dominates the ball. It’s pretty hard to find a rhythm when you get one shot every 5 minutes. Vince Carter is such a talented player and he gets great dimes when he bothers to pass. Superb court vision. It’ll greatly improve his field goal percentage and allow for our other men to become more of a threat. sadly however, i highly doubt this is going to happen.
The Magic still have time to make sure it plays more balanced on the offensive side of the ball.
And it starts with the four All-Stars getting more accustomed to each other and playing better, as a group.

What happened to the players from last year?
I agree with far-away…defense, DESIRE & DEDICATION. There is nobody on this team that is as driven as Kobe or Lebron…nobody. It irks me to noooooooooooooo end when I see players spending so much time crying about calls. Get into the game and get out of the stands. Dwight is a typical STAR… he has lost focus of the goal. No name players are lighting him up do to their desire & dedication…they are hustling. There are a lot of people looking like they do not know what is going on. People are driving to the hole like never before. Dwight is trying to cover tooooooooooooooooo much for other people and it is resulting in him getting dumb fouls, sitting on the bench most of the game and the guy he is suppose to be covering getting easy baskets because no one is covering them. NOBODY fears the magic…they look forward to their games with them. Jameer is looking like a rookie…he is being schooled. Matt Barnes & JJ are playing their butts off…too bad the rest forgot how. This team is noooooooooo way near to last years team. Very disappointing, frustrating…watch some game tapes of MJ…learn how they had the killer attitude. Put teams away early and did not let them have any hope. Last years team did not give up…this years gives up very quickly…

case in point…when the Lakers got spanked by the Clipps last week…they came out the next game with a 24-9 first quarter against Milwaukee. I have yet to see the Magic bounce back in the same manner after losing to an inferior team.

You're right.
Last year’s team didn’t give up. This year’s team isn’t as resilient.

They were pretty resilient in the first quarter of the year.
With the exception of that game in OKC. The team has gotten softer as we’ve gotten healthier… don’t know what that means.
i'd like
a dominant center to dominate, to get angry and use that anger to his advantage. to get on guys for blown assignments, to stop smiling and get serious, etc.
sadly, i don’t think that’ll be the case this year. i hope he doesn’t realize it past his prime or he’s just going to be known as untapped potential.

How they come out tomorrow against LA will say a lot. (Personally, I don’t want to play LA right now) They need to come out jacked and ready to go. This game could be a lightning rod for the second half. But if its the same stuff we’ve seen in 2010, it will be a long week….one I say we go 2-2 in.

Yeah, I think tomorrow's game could potentially reveal a lot about the Magic.

Desire…
This team is stacked with talent and is lead by a great coach. So the chemistry will surely develop if they constantly play with intensity (bearing major injuries and severe internal conflicts). But I get the feel that most of the players are preoccupied when on court and are not putting in nearly enough effort.
Simply put, I’d like to see Orlando win every game. But when they lose, I’d rather the game recaps state that they were "out-played", not "out-hustled".
Fact: I have never met a Magic player, cheerleader or fan in person...
I want to see a win.
I don’t care how they do it. Just win baby! These guys took the title from us last season. We need to stick it to them and win. Enough of the crap. Just play like you know how to play and win.
Wins are nice.

I want to see heart and hustle. Fire and desire.
The Magic played like that vs. the Hawks… are they going to do it again against a heavy team like the Lakers?
I sincerely doubt it.
A TRADE
that’s what I would like to see. That shook us up last year! We need a pg…yeah I love meer but he is going the other way at this point in his career. Great guy…good sixth man for next 2-3 years. Even when his knee is 100% he will still get beat down the middle on d which =‘s fouls on d12. If you have to stick with meer this year then cut his minutes to 20 per game and put that time in dad’s hands…he’s played well all season, or run JJ at point a few minutes. Maybe meer can be better ready for playoffs wear and tear wise and trade his this summer.

I don’t know about shaking up a very talented roster with a trade. It is the deepest roster talentwise in the league and making a trade doesn’t resolve the chemistry issues. Also, the message sent to the team will be completely wrong…instead of forcing them to work through the chemistry problems, a trade essentially says…if you can’t make it work, we’ll just just get rid of the parts you all think is a problem.
Spreading that Calgary Flames, Montreal Expos, The U, and Orlando Magic love.
trade?
You have to look at the team and if there is a rotten apple in the barrel, you have to throw the rotten apple out. Not the barrel. Maybe a trade would wake the other four up. As far as Hedo, we have got to get over it. HE IS GONE. GONE. GONE. Quit kicking a dead horse. Get over it. I keep hearing about they need playing time together in order to start performing as a team. How many practices and losing games do they need? 82? I hate to lose and to lose by 1 point hurts but not like by double figures and by a less than 500 team. Rather than a trade, I would go along with 4 starters coming off the bench sometime in the second quarter.
I was really hoping that Stan would start the 2nd half in Portland with the bench players.
But alas, that didn’t happen. I think Stan needs to get back to his old ways. I also think he needs to make a bigger change than just swapping out Pietrus and Barnes. They’re both borderline starter/energy-off-the-bench guys, so it’s not really a big statement to swap them out. Make a statement and move someone of consequence to the bench.
I still stand by my 'make Redick a starter/Carter a reserve' move.
It seems like Vince, like I said, is having an adverse affect on the starters. Dwight, especially.

I'm all for it.
I just didn’t want to single Vince out, because I’ve been guilty of that lately. It really is a problem with the starting unit as a whole.
Yeah, but I do think it starts with him.
And then trickle down to the rest of the Big Four.
