The numbers show Jason Williams is the better point guard this season
Who would've thought?
Remember back in the summer when there was an article proposing a potential point guard controversy for the Magic? We all laughed.
Jameer was coming off an All-Star season with a PER of over 20 and Jason Williams (who has never been an All-Star or had a PER of 20) had been retired.
Thirty-eight games into the season, the comparison seems to be a wash.
FG% FT% PTS/40 REB/40 AST/40 TS% AST% TO% USG% REB%
.452 .700 12.3 2.8 7.3 57.0 36.6 9.2 15.1 4.0
.413 .818 16.8 4.0 7.1 50.3 26.6 10.6 21.9 5.7
Jason is the first line, Jameer is the second.
Jason's PER is 14.25, Jameer's is 13.85.
Jason is by far the superior distributer, we knew that going into the season. His assist rate is 40% higher than Jameer's while his turnover rate is lower. What we didn't anticipate is Jameer's shooting dropping off the cliff while Jason puts up a career high 45%.
Jason also seems to bring more energy more consistently.
We know that Jameer is the better player, but it would impossible to tell by watching them this season. Assuming Nelson continues to struggle, who should be playing more minutes? SVG has been playing the hot hand, is that the best way to go?

Everything you said was right.
I still voted for Jameer because the Magic will not win the title without Jameer playing like he was last year. Jason has been invaluable so far this year, but he cannot play big minutes for an extended period of time. We saw that happening at the end of Jason’s stretch of starts where AJ was playing a large bulk of 4th quarters in finishing games for us. Jason has looked refreshed in coming back off the bench and playing closer to 15-20 minutes a game.
But Jameer needs to be the guy with the team we have. We need him to get back the confidence he had in the 07-08 playoffs and before the injury last year. Without that, we’re not going to be going back to the Finals. I think the encouraging thing is that in the last 2 games, Jameer has been running the offense well, in my opinion. Getting open shots for the right guys, feeding the ball to Dwight in the post, throwing alleys to Dwight. coming into this year, taking open mid-range and 3-pointers off of a pick would’ve been included in that list of smart things, he just hasn’t been hitting them consistently.
I think Stan can go with the way he was playing the two guys last night, where until (if ever) Jameer regains his form consistently, just go with the hot hand and whoever is running the offense better late in the game. I think the Vince situation is a more pressing concern right now, and the fact our offensive and defensive efficiency has been amazing the last 2 games is a potentially unsettling situation.
I also agree with the points but voted for Jameer
Williams is better, but as was said, he can’t play extended minutes for a long duration. Williams seems to do best when he averages about 20 minutes per game.

I'll be right there
I'll never leave
And all I ask of you is

I tend to agree with this argument
We’re not winning a title with Williams as our main minutes-playing PG, so we need to Jameer back healthy and into the swing of things. I’m not sure about his health, but I think the best way to get him into the playing groove is by, y’know, playing him.
I like a 30-32 and 16-18 split, minutes wise.

We know Jameer’s strengths is shooting. He just needs to get into form and play aggressive. I think Jameer needs same/more playtime for about two weeks before I decide if J Will should be playing more 4th Quarter minutes. But can J Will handle more minutes anyways too? We all saw him dropping his play as he played towards the end of his starter’s stint. J Will has been absolutely fantastic this year tho. It’s a good problem.
Nelson still needs to start, regardless of what his current numbers show.
Everyone knows what Jameer can do when he’s on his game.

I was simply asking about minutes, not who starts - Jameer is better starting and Jason is better as a spark off the bench
Their minutes have been see-sawing the past couple games, and that’s what triggered the post.

Probably mostly because of Jameer's knee.
It's a good thing Larry Bird's initials weren't MJ. '80s basketball was confusing enough -- Magic Johnson, Michael Jordan, Marles Jarkley, Mominique Jilkins... Makeem Jolajuwon...
Agreed. That's where I think Nelson trumps Williams.
Jameer is conditioned to play a ton of minutes over a lengthy period of time. Jason isn’t.

Also, where are you getting your assist and turnover stats? basketball-reference shows Nelson w/ a higher AST rate and lower TO rate
ESPN - Hollinger invented the formula, so I tend to trust his numbers more than basketball-reference

It still sounds like his knee isn't right from what I read in the Sentinel this morning

williams
is effective when he plays a max of just 20 min per game. jameer should play more minutes

Williams' situation was the same one with Johnson last year.

Yeah -- Jameer's had knee problems.
Even if you only cut out those four games immediately following his return from the injury — the ones where he was clearly very affected by it — he ends up solidly in front of Williams. Those four games have put a huge dent in his stats, and he hasn’t played enough to overcome them.
Plus Williams has been a major defensive liability. Nelson’s defense has been slightly off this year, but Williams has been worse. (And there’s no indication he’s capable of anything better than that.)
And Williams fatigues easily.
Ultimately, if we have the Jameer we saw before the injury, or even the Jameer of the last week or so, that guy is clearly better than J-Will. Not that J-Will isn’t a good backup… he is a very good backup. But that’s exactly what he is.

No question in my mind
That J Will has been the better player this year. Defense has been about the same, whichever player you go with, but just look at the difference in offensive rating. Look at the +/- difference. I think really it comes down to better decision making when Williams is in.
