Tyronn Lue Reportedly to Sign with Greek Team PAOK

Former Orlando Magic point guard Tyronn Lue is nearing an agreement with the Greek club PAOK, according to TalkBasket, via SLAM. The Magic acquired Lue from Milwaukee in exchange for Keith Bogans last February shortly after Jameer Nelson went down with a season-ending shoulder injury. Lue's signing anywhere will officially end the Magic's roster turnover from last season's Eastern Conference Championship squad, as all its free agents have either moved on or re-signed with Orlando.

After the February trade, Lue averaged 3.0 points and 1.0 assists on 39.5% shooting for Orlando, making 14 regular-season appearances and just 1 in the playoffs. His lackluster play as the second-string point guard inthe immediate aftermath of Nelson's injury may have influenced GM Otis Smith's decision to acquire Rafer Alston at the trading deadline, relegating Lue to third-string duties.

Did he really play enough to be deemed lackluster? I think he coulda handled it pretty well with AJ. He was given like 2 games only to prove that, when the Magic ended up No3 seed anyways. He shoots much better than Rafer too, but probably wouldnt have been overall like Rafer.

To be honest, I'm not sure why he didn't play more often, given what a great shooter he is from 3-pt range

And I think it would have made more sense to bring him back rather than to sign Jason Williams. Clearly, I’m missing something, since the Magic never considered re-signing Lue. I defer to the collective wisdom of Otis and Stan in this case.

Behind the scenes

something must have happened or been observed that we are privy to? that’s one guess.

Was he getting rolled on defense?

he’s about average on D I think. On offense, he may fit a chucker role if given full reins, id have to look at his play when he was actually given minutes and full rein.. he wouldn’t beat the passing ability of a jason williams. and jason does have experience too, i can see that signing making sense. And AJ is a better defender I think.. But still Lue is a good shooter, still has quickness in him. I was perenially baffled by his 0 play time and if it wasn’t jason or a very select few FA’s in my mind that were signed, than I would have been very upset over Lue not being resigned. I dont think there was any offcourt or PT disagreements, of course Im guessing as much as you now, but Lue seems like a great guy, and he is a good lockerroom guy too.

Yeah, I looked at his first three games with the Magic

.333 FG% .250 3pt%. 15-20 minutes, few fouls, few assists, just not much of anything impressive. Looks like he just blew it in his “audition” games.

Then his minutes went away. Interestingly, these numbers are significantly below what he was averaging just a month before with the Bucks.

Statstically, Lue was slightly above-average but that's with a small sample size.

Probably cause we have enough 3-pt shooters and his defense has been questioned at times (though i dont think hes that bad)

Shame, he should have been given a chance to shine but he’s always been shifted around the league as a 12th man for his size and his D (I mean we all know his most famous defensive attempt)

There was no real need for Lue, no.
