Off-Day Open Thread: Football and the Orlando Magic

For football fans, today is a special day because it marks the beginning of the 2009-2010 NFL regular season. What does this have to do with the Orlando Magic? Well, I wanted to have fun since the NBA off-season is still in full swing.

When Matt Barnes had his press conference with the media a little over a month ago, I was able to ask him during the Q/A session about his football experiences. For those that don't know, Barnes was thisclose to trying out for the NFL before his inaugural season with the Golden State Warriors at the beginning of the 'We Believe' era. His position was wide receiver, and he was a damn good one at Del Campo High School (an All-American, led the nation with 28 touchdown catches).

So, with a former football player on the team, and the NFL kicking off a new year tonight, I figured it'd be fun to ask the community to figure out what football positions would best suit the Magic players on the roster? Jameer Nelson at running back doesn't seem so farfetched, 'eh?

Enjoy.

JJ would be the Special Teams Coach

Pietrus-SS
Vince – FS (would make a very good one too)
Bass – DE
Anthony Johnson wouldn’t be able to fit a helmet over his head…the neck would get in the way
Gortat – Kicker (just because it would be amusing)
Jason Williams – Corner (Second coming of Jason Sehorn)
Shard – WR
Barnes – WR
Jameer – HB ( I would use him not only to run the ball, but heavily in blitz pickups and blocking)
Dwight – TE
SVG – Quarterback (I mean..who wouldn’t want to see that?)

Shard- WR

Bass- TE

Vince- Slot

Jameer- HB (Hes so shifty)

Gortat- MLB (So he can smash things)

JJ- QB (He did go to duke, think he would be smart enough to play)

Peaches- CB

Ryan (Dunno what to call him)- Long snapper

Dad- FB

Adonal- Gatorade fetcher

White Chocolate- change of pace RB

Barnes- obvious

Shaq sucks.

Great stuff, everyone. Figured this would be a fun post to get away from b-ball chatter for a little bit.

Random thoughts:

- Dwight at WR or TE would be absurd, given his height and wingspan.
- Bass would be an ABSOLUTE MONSTER at DE, mercy.
- Jameer makes sense at HB, given his lower body strength and shiftiness (as has been mentioned).
- Redick at QB would be intriguing, figure that IQ will come in handy.

Nice ER!

Not many people outside the Sacto area know that Matty B played football at Del Campo (it’s in a suburb east of Sac—Citrus Heights if you’re familiar with the area) and did it well.

I even knew a UCLA fan who complained how Steve Lavin used Matty when he played there because they felt like he was squandering his talent. Other than Kevin Johnson, Matty is by far the best basketball player. (I’m not sure whom the best athlete would be. It’d probably be KJ, but it might be a couple of different football players that I don’t remember is from Sac.)

Barnes is definitely one hell of an athlete.

I think his football skills has numerous applications to the basketball court.

I flippin' hate football, but I imagine MP would make a great special teams "gunner"

(that’s what they call those drones who sprint down the field and try to annihilate people on punts, right?)

I'll watch if Daunte Culpepper's playing.

But since he’s not starting for Detroit this year, I have no reason to watch. None.

I don't like football anymore either

I find it really boring to watch. And, I really honestly don’t mind watching baseball. So what does that tell you?

Have to agree with you.

I tried to force myself to watch the superbowl but only got half way through. Football highlights are pretty fun to watch though. The only football player I can name is Terrel Owens and only because he had that sick ally-oop of the backboard in the celebrity all-star game last season.
