Bright Side of the Sun Yue

                        Sun_yue_medium

The Los Angeles Lakers recently released chinese national team PG Sun Yue. The Lakers let him go in order to resign Lamar Odom and to minimize the cap hit. He did not get any real playing time in Los Angeles which is troubling since Jordan Farmar and Shannon Brown aren't necessarily all-star's. Aside from that troubling factor I think Yue would be a smart signing for the Magic in many ways.

He will give us a young playmaker at the PG/SG position. Being 6'9 he already has a height advantage over nearly every guard in the league. He also fits into our offense where height and ball handling are major pluses (think a not as good Hedo) He doesn't look to have the speed for a great transition game but his strength is in a half court offense. A pick and roll game with Yue and Ryan Anderson off the bench will be quite effective.

Another factor the Magic should take into account is the sheer popularity of Chinese players. The Houston Rockets have grown their brand internationally by drafting Chinese superstar Yao Ming.  The NBA estimates that over 300 million Chinese watch basketball. I am not so sure those numbers are valid but we do know their influence whenever All Star voting takes place. Yao always has a tremendous number of votes. Even New Jersey power forward Yi Jianlian garners a rediculous amount of fan votes. I am not certain whether the Magic directly benefit from the ratings boost that these players provide but I am sure that it is good for the NBA which is good for Orlando.

He'd make sense for Orlando if he were any good.

When the best you can say about a guard is, “he’s tall,” then he’s not worth it.

make sense

sign him for the 3rd pg and trade jj and aj for watson and murrow

We're looking for someone to take Tyronn Lue's minutes.

Sun has shown he’s quite capable of holding down that type of bench spot. I have no problems with allowing him to fill roster spot #12 on a team that’s not going to play more than 9 or 10 guys regular minutes (Sorry I don’t see JJ and Ryan pulling as many minutes as they might deserve on most other teams.)

why not.... tyronn lue?

sun hasn’t shown anything cause he never played. if i’m orlando i wan’t someone who’s a proven nba player… thats why i still hope otis gets watson in a trade

In the triangle, anyone could be the fascilitator.

Yue might be o.k., but Odom is much more important to the teams long term success. Yue may be serviceable as a 3rd PG. 2-3 minutes a game shouldn’t determine the outcome. If we lose a close game like that, then we didn’t do enough to win in the 1st place. Meer will get his 32-35 min a game, Dad his 13-15 which leaves only about 0-3 min a game for another playmaker. Sounds reasonable.

Life's too short. Be a fan. Magic, Cards,Rays and "the U"! What a winning combo.

by hevchv on Aug 6, 2009 7:25 AM EDT up reply actions

Let's put it this way...

One day, Tyronne Lue once backed up Derek Fisher. Now, Fisher is backed up by Jordan Farmar and Shannon Brown. Yue, on the other hand, was uncapable of breaking in as the 3rd PG even before Brown arrived in the Morrison trade.

Yue has alot of growing to do. The Lakers have made it apparent they want contributors NOW, hence why they even made the Artest-Ariza swap. Yue might be good several years from now, I don’t doubt it. Believe me, I actually saw a future for him, because he was prototypical of Phil Jackson favorites for big guards.

True

And the Lakers definitely KEEP and PLAY a lot of dead weight players. For this guy to be cut by them must mean Yue really stinks or Kobe doesn’t think Yue idolizes him enough.

He wasn't even the best player on the Lakers' D-League team.

The Magic had guys on their summer-league squad (like Russell Robinson) better than Sun.

by Evan Dunlap on Aug 6, 2009 10:50 AM EDT reply actions

What does it matter?

Okay, seriously, even if all of China were interested in him, it wouldn’t matter, because that doesn’t affect the way he plays. And he wouldn’t play anyway, as the 15th man.

by Evan Dunlap on Aug 6, 2009 2:47 PM EDT up reply actions

It wouldn't hurt to sell additional thousands of jerseys.

Especially with Yao out for a season…
I know he wouldn’t play, but he could squeeze in for a min here & there

by Dzogi on Aug 7, 2009 7:52 AM EDT up reply actions

I don't know enough about him to say one way or the other.

His lack of playing time shouldn’t be considered a factor though, because Phil Jackson doesn’t like rookies in general, and he was playing on a team with a deep and well established bench.

"Fun fact: Larry Hughes, who couldn’t stay healthy if all his human parts were replaced with bionic implants, is out for the next four weeks with a bruised leg. Phil Jackson is not Greg Poppovich or Larry Brown

he’s far more willing to use rookies and youngsters.

People aren't looking at the possibilities

If we do sign him we could trade JJ and AJ for another solid player because Yue can play both guard positions well

How about the Olympics

When I watched Yao’s team last year in the Olympics the big chinese point guard stood out from the rest of the team. He played really well not spectacular but under control. I found an article here explaining what yue did in the tourney. http://www.interbasket.net/news/482/2008/09/27/sun-yue-profile-2008-olympic-breakouts/

Sun Yue didn’t exactly tear it up in any one category at the Olympics, but the self-proclaimed Monkey King made a lasting impression with his ability to do a little of everything on the floor. His final statistics, 6.8 points, 2.5 assists, 1.7 rebounds, 1.3 steals and 1 block, didn’t sum up his contributions. Sun Yue’s effort, energy, and athleticism on the floor gave Team China another dimension. In six Olympic games, Sun Yue played 28 minutes a game, and shot an efficient 46.7% from the field, 35.3% from three, and 87.5% from the free throw.

by Souwantmyname on Aug 6, 2009 5:23 PM EDT up reply actions

Actually it does Chris Bosh is the better offensive player

Yue has played in all the basketball leagues and is the starting point guard for a national team.

Jeez i don’t see where all this negative criticism is coming from. I show that Yue has played well versus NBA level talent which you asked for and you discount it. I’m confused

I probably know Judo! How many of you can make the same boast?

The FIBA and international basketball is a different animal than the NBA.

Yes, Bosh is a better offensive player than Howard, but he’s still not better than him.

Hah,so true,but let'em have fun

After all,we’re having serious lack of topics lately

by Dzogi on Aug 7, 2009 7:55 AM EDT up reply actions

Here's all you need to know about Sun Yue.

On January 16, 2009, the Lakers hosted the Orlando Magic at the Staples Center. The Lakers’ backup point guard, Jordan Farmar, was injured. The Lakers played an elderly Derek Fisher for 41 minutes; in the fourth quarter, Jameer Nelson repeatedly scored off the exhausted Fisher, eventually leading the Magic to a 109-103 comeback win.

You remember this game. But do you remember why the Lakers played Fisher so long, even after it was obvious he was exhausted? THEY DID IT TO AVOID PLAYING SUN YUE.

He's currently two-thirds man, one-third amazing. Which, let's face it, is still a pretty good ratio.

by 3.3seconds on Aug 6, 2009 5:32 PM EDT reply actions   3 recs

it couldn't be the fact the matchup is bad

Yue is a 6’9 combo guard versus a lightning quick PG in Nelson… Urghh I’m not completely gung ho for Yue but everyone seems to be discounting his ability for some reason.

Why wouldn’t we want a big PG when we play against the Billups and Stuckeys of the NBA. Nelson isn’t getting any bigger

I probably know Judo! How many of you can make the same boast?

by Souwantmyname on Aug 6, 2009 6:21 PM EDT up reply actions

People discount him because he sucks.

Ridiculous Upside, which is generally biased in favor of D-League players—it ripped the Magic when they traded for Tyronn Lue rather than sign a D-Leaguer— called Sun “mediocre (to be generous).”’

He’s not worth a roster spot.

Because a "big PG" is 6'4".

There’s not a single effective point guard in the league taller than that. (With the possible exception of Stuckey, and he’s a) not readlly 6’5", and B) not really a point guard. Not to criticize him, because he’s a good player — a good player who’s a natural SG.)

And yeah, some players might have a four-inch height advantage on Nelson. But if you think a four-inch height advantage is enough to make up for the fact that Nelson is the best point guard we have, and we have to be playing our game…

…well, you probably also think that Phil Jackson saw Derek Fisher single-handedly losing that game, and thought to himself, “well, what if I… no, wait, that’s a bad match-up.”

He's currently two-thirds man, one-third amazing. Which, let's face it, is still a pretty good ratio.

Maybe if we were owned by Disney

And called the Orlando Mickeys, we would sign someone purely for marketing purposes in China.

But until then, let’s stick to people who can play basketball, yeah?

What are you talking about E!?!?

The Lakers are favorites to win it every year….even if Smush Parker is their starting PG!! I can always count on Lakers fans to remind me of that.

I’m still impressed at how they troll around SB Nation looking for any FanPosts that talk about Laker players…and give us their two cents about how that site’s team sucks and/or how they are winning the title next year. I wish I had the time to search for anytime someone makes a suggestion that AJ would be a nice backup for their team so I can reply to them with off the wall statements such as “Dwight Howard is the greatest player ever” and that “the Magic rule.” Kind of ridiculous isn’t it? I should write a post on 3QC about Josh Powell’s intangibles and see how quickly one of them shows up to remind me that their is no point in any team playing next season.
