Actual Height of Magic Players

Dwight Howard said during his webcast a couple weeks ago that he was 6'11," which is his listed height.  So I went looking at his actual measurements before the draft to see if he was exaggerating.  He's 6'11" all right, but what he fails to mention, however, is that "6'11" includes basketball sneakers and rounding up from 6'10.25"

So how tall are the rest of the Magic really??

Ryan Anderson 6'8.75"

Matt Barnes 6'6.75"

Brandon Bass 6'6.25"

Vince Carter 6'5.5"

Marcin Gortat 6'11"

Dwight Howard 6'9"

Anthony Johnson 6'2.5"

Rashard Lewis 6'8.5"

Jameer Nelson 5'11"

Mickael Pietrus 6'5.5"

J.J. Redick 6'4"

Jason Williams 6'0.25"

Redick is the only one who's listed at his exact actual height.  Shaq is a legit 7'1", in case any of you were wondering.

Most information came from DraftExpress, who has a lot of the pre-draft measurements, the rest came from scouring the web.

One thing to think about...

I assume those measurements came from the pre-draft combine. In Dwight’s case, he was measured right after high school. Don’t you think he might have grown a few inches by then?

He was 18..

Its possible, but look at him next to Shaq when they play Cleveland, see if he’s only 2 inches shorter. I’m saying nuh-uh.

It's not a dunk unless your hand makes contact with the rim. Yeah, I'm talkin' to you, "Superman..."

Dwight is so much more athletic then Shaq. I’ll be he can jump a full 8 to 10 inches higher.

I'll bet 16-20

Pictures and vidoes can be very deceiving because of camera angles.

And is Draftexpress a official site? In other words is is trustworthy? If it is then why do all other sites that I’ve looked at have Shaq as 7’1 and Dwight as 6’11?

by josh99 on Aug 21, 2009 3:33 AM EDT up reply actions

I would say draftexpress is a legit site. Most of their information and descriptions of players are pretty accurate.

by shoothoop on Aug 21, 2009 5:04 AM EDT up reply actions

Because players' officially listed heights are frequently inflated by an inch or two.

Most sites use players’ “official” heights, which are distributed by the teams, and often an inch or two higher than the player’s actual height.

He's currently two-thirds man, one-third amazing. Which, let's face it, is still a pretty good ratio.

Yep, because they usually include shoes and are rounded up

I’m the same height as Jameer Nelson! Maybe I gave up on that pro basketball career too early.

by eltharion_doa on Aug 21, 2009 8:49 AM EDT up reply actions

So how come Shaq is supposedly listed at his real height?

And another question, why is it that heights are changed? If all players are measured in shoes, then they should approximately have the same change in height, right?

BTW I’m not saying that I’m right and you’re wrong or anything… I just want answers to my own questions…

Teams are silly about seeming "short"

Considering that arm length is as important as height, this seems silly, but I think it goes back to the old stereotypes of how tall players at certain positions have to be.

Poster for next year? I'm thinking My Little Pony.

Arm length is EXTREMELY important

Wingspan for basketball players is the great equalizer. Guys like Russell Westbrook, Dejaun Blair, and our own Dwight Howard can guard much taller players, and shoot over taller players cause of their reach.

You know this, and I know this

So why does the media have such a hard time understanding this?

Poster for next year? I'm thinking My Little Pony.

Because the media, quite frankly, isn't that astute.

Re: Shaq

I don’t know why exactly, but my guess is that they didn’t feel the need to exaggerate his height. Everyone knew he was huge, he’s legitimately 7’1" — size was obviously a plus for him in the draft. (Not that he had any chance of not going first in the draft.) If anything, calling him taller makes him seem more risky to teams — a 7’3" guy is most likely going to have leg/foot problems. A 7’1" guy might escape that.

Not that Shaq’s listed size is ALL honest, though — when he entered the league, he listed at 303 lbs. He currently lists at 325. Now, you look at rookie Shaq, and you look at modern-day Shaq, and you just try to tell me he’s only gained 22 pounds.

He's currently two-thirds man, one-third amazing. Which, let's face it, is still a pretty good ratio.

Shaq measured in at 7'1" at the Pre-draft workouts.

The listed heights are with shoes, for the most part. Shaq and J.J. are exceptions. Draft Express obtains the official measurements from the pre draft workouts every year, so yes all measurements are official. In general shoes add 1.25in, but it depends on the shoe, lol. Then the numbers are rounded to the nearest inch (or just UP to the next inch.)

Here’s a Pic of Shaq and Dwight. (shaq’s bending over a little too)

Why on earth

Would anyone think commenting on the real height of Magic players be something to pick on?

“That Dwight Howard sucks, he’s not even 6’10”! HAAHAHA"

wtf?

Height doesn't seem that important to me.

Now if they would measure a flat-footed arm reach, that would be a more important measurement than how high somebody’s head is.

Like I say all the time, height is overrated.

Why do people always make out like “in shoes” is such an inflated statistic? He’s wearing shoes on the basketball court. He’s 6’11. He’s not playing barefoot, so that measurement is redundant.

He could be 5’9 and play in high heels. As long as he still jumps out of the gym and stuffs the ball wherever he wants it to go, it’s fine by me. And it kinda worked for Rodman too.
