Retirees

T Mac- One of 3 guys in the team history that was a perennial all-star, truly spent his best career years here. However the fact that he never won a playoff series, and the eventual falling out make this a difficult one.

Outlaw- Love the guy, one of my favorite Magic players ever, but was never more than a role player. One of those lovable guys, like a Kurt Rambis in LA, but not worthy of having a number retired.

Skiles- Now to me this guy brings as good a case as anyone short of Nick Anderson- some very good years, a lovable player here, set the NBA record for assists in a game, and was part of the rise of this team’s initial run to elite status (although eventually ran off in the ill fated attempt to make Penny a PG) I’m sure someone can make a better statistical argument for Nick Anderson, but I’d almost be inclined to say yes to him. But im still holding strong on my belief that hopefully Jameer and Howard are the 1st 2 guys whose jerseys hang from the rafters.

Each player have their plusses and minuses.

I voted Skiles

but I want a T-Mac one because I think it’s actually closer than some realize.

I could easily write a Tracy McGrady write-up.

T-Mac certainly would give me plenty of material to work with.

What about "3D" Dennis Scott

held the record for most 3’s in a single game!!

No one suggested him.

I thought about adding him to the poll, but I figured McGrady, Outlaw, and Skiles would suffice.

I like Bo and Skiles also. I feel like we’re missing 1 or 2 other players who may merit some consideration.

I'm sure I could have added another player to the poll, but I doubt he would have won it.

I think its funny we are evaluating these jersey retirements so much.

Its funny and ironic how the Kings quickly retired Chris Webber’s jersey this year, a player who the Magic drafted and exchanged for Penny, yet there is no clear cut favorite for the Magic to retire. Mostly because those players deserving jersey retirement that put up similar number to Webber’s in Sacramento left on such bad terms with the team. I just find it interesting that that is the case. All in all, I really think the Magic need to do something to honor players that are dear to the fans…it doesn’t have to be a jersey retirement, but something. Courtney Lee rocking Air Pennys, albeit real cool, does not cut it. It has to come from the franchise. The 20 year anniversary would of been a good time to do something…oh well…maybe they should wait till the Silver Anniversary.

Spreading that Calgary Flames, Montreal Expos, The U, and Orlando Magic love.

I'm going to go against the grain and suggest way too much work for you ER

Why not compare & contrast all 3?

Someone suggested him, so I put him in the poll.

That was the whole point of this exercise – for the community to suggest people & then vote on someone.

Scott Skiles was the man.

I would definitely retire his jersey.

by Vindibudd on Aug 20, 2009 2:02 AM EDT reply actions

Apparently Skiles beats them

Although Bo is my personal fav. But,if Scott’s jersey ends up there someday,I don’t see any Magic fan having a thing against it.

by Dzogi on Aug 20, 2009 6:36 AM EDT reply actions

Skiles is the most interesting to me

T-Mac would mostly be Penny 2.0 – the stats are there, but the intangibles are questionable. Outlaw would be Armstrong 2.0 – weaker on stats, but higher intangibles. Skiles I see as similar to Anderson – some stats, good intangibles, and someone who was popular with the fan base with the early team. I’m just not sure if he had quite enough of either to be “worthy” of jersey retirement by the numbers. I’m fairly certain T-Mac would and Outlaw wouldn’t, but Skiles I’m not sure about, which is why I picked him.

Yeah, Scott has the most intrigue.

You’re accurate in stating that both McGrady and Outlaw are similar to other Magic players that I’ve written about, but Skiles is different. His name is rarely brought up in discussion, so there’s an unknown factor.

I understand this is all for fun

But Scott Skiles wouldn’t even let Orlando hang a banner in his honor. I doubt he would take part in this.

So what? You said it yourself it's for fun, so it doesn't really matter what Scott Skiles would think.

true

with all this said, wouldn’t be fun to have an annual old timers game? Do it mid season before a big game, make it a charitable event. You know Nick Anderson and Bo Outlaw would be down. Derrick Scott’s fat ass would probably be down as well.
