Around SBN: Explaining Jeremy Lin's Early, Surprising Success

[T]he Magic’s preferred offer for [C.J.] Watson is apparently a chunk of the [Hedo] Turkoglu trade exception, a second round pick and the rights to Milovan Rakovic.

[....]

[T]he sticking point here is likely the Warriors holding out for a first round pick, cash, or both.

Adam Lauridsen of the Bay Area News Group, citing sources in the Magic organization, says the Golden State Warriors want more than the package the Magic are offering in exchange for restricted free-agent point guard C.J. Watson. (HT: Golden State of Mind)

Otis really wants Watson, doesn't he?

A trade exception (not insignificant) and a 2nd rounder and Milovan Rakovic? Holy crap, now that’s a serious offer.

Lauridsen says that, if he were the Magic, he wouldn’t increase his offer. Throwing in a first-round pick is too much, and using even more of the trade exception would compromise Orlando’s flexibility at the trading deadline.

His belief is that the Warriors won’t get a better offer than what Otis already has on the table, and will eventually make the deal.

It’s safe to say most Magic fans hope he’s right.

no joke. ("safe to say...")

I would love the move as is.

Just because Watson will be great off the bench if not this year, then after Dad leaves.

Aside from the trade exception, the other pieces in the deal aren't anything serious.

I’m hesitant to give up the TPE in a deal like this, but it’s risky to wait for another offer to come along.

Normally, I wouldn’t care about giving up a first round pick but given the financial situation for the Orlando Magic, a first round pick is supreme because of the relatively low cost of having a player under contract.

Yeah, I'm aware of that. I rather have the full TPE at Otis' disposal, but I'm nitpicking here.

If Smith can get a deal done for Watson, goodness ..

WHAT!?!?

Milovan Rakovic is the next Marcin Gortat. Are you kidding…and to think the Mavs could of had him as well. Actually, I don’t think Rakovic may ever play in the NBA. He’s not putting up stellar numbers and he’s playing in Russia. A guy his age, if he’s serious about playing in the NBA needs to come over here and play D-League.

GSW

The guy is FA they won’t really use.. They are getting a lot in this deal. This is a good example of what is wrong with the GSW franchise.

I think the Warriors will eventually blink and accept the deal.

The Warriors have no idea what they want or a plan to carry the team forward.

Mostly, it appears that they just want to continue to stockpile draft picks and not get any better with veterans. The trade exception is big for a cost-saving team.

The Warriors appear to be run by people with no real basketball interest beyond basic fandom and are hamstrung by a meddling owner and a dipshit coach.

It is when it hamstrings our deal (and all deals they’ve been rumored in this off-season).

I’m genuinely tired of team owners who have no interest in the actual games on the floor.

Who???

I never heard of and didn’t even know we had the rights to Milan Rakovic. How did we end up with his rights from Dallas?

This looks to me like a good deal for the Warriors. They seem to have a lack of big men, but then again, their coach doesn’t seem to like to play bigs very much. What I read about Rakovic said he likes to overpower his opponents, which sounds like he likes to bang. That should fit well with Golden State’s perimeter oriented game.

Shouldn’t offer this guy and a first rounder though.

by SteRanCo on Aug 11, 2009 1:13 PM EDT reply actions

Milovan plays in St Petersburg, for 3 seasons now.

He was with the Magic in the summer league, but couldn’t play at all because of some paper issues.
Personally,I doubt he’ll ever finish in the NBA,so we don’t lose much with him(anything)
But,yeah,a first-rounder is too much.

by Dzogi on Aug 11, 2009 2:58 PM EDT up reply actions

Adding a first rounder to the deal is too much, but offering the pick by itself isn't too much.

Just because Orlando is going to be a top 5 team, which means that pick is going to be in the bottom 5.

It is known as the most lopsided trade against the Magic in the history of the franchise

The repercussions of that trade will be felt for decades.

I dispute that assertion

The trade of the rights of Lior Eliyahu to Houston for cash are what marked the demise of this franchise

Oh yes, the trade known as the Eliyahu Fiasco

I sometimes punch the wall when I think about that particular trade.

Yes and yes

If they can get Watson for about the 2/3 mill range and still have about 6/7 mill of the trade exception, I love it.

No way to the 1st rounder and I usually like 2nd rounders but our record (I think) will be great again making the 2nd round pick in the 53-60 range. Watson is worth it.

So who is getting the most DNP-CD? AJ, JJ, Barnes, or Anderson?

I disagree

Van Gundy is very high on Anderson, and so is management. I think that they will try to develop him during the season, they see a lot of potential in him. A.J. will get some DNP’s if the Watson trade goes through. I absolutely love what Otis has done this summer, he should win Exec of the year if Orlando wins the East.

I'm more than aware of how highly Otis and Stan think of Ryan Anderson.

That being said, given how much depth the Magic have in the frontcourt compared to the backcourt, Anderson isn’t going to see a lot of consistent minutes. Will he see playing time? Sure.

As for Anthony Johnson, yeah, if the Watson trade goes through, he’ll see his share of DNP-CD’s.

...biting my tongue...

He's currently two-thirds man, one-third amazing. Which, let's face it, is still a pretty good ratio.

I hear you on Anderson/Bass

But it’s very clear that—at least right now—the team values Bass slightly more. Nothing against Anderson.

by Evan Dunlap on Aug 12, 2009 2:23 PM EDT up reply actions

Well that's the beautiful thing about Rashard

They can play Anderson or Bass alongside Lewis. The only reasons Bass is favored over Anderson right now is his contract and his defense. Anderson is obviously a much better scorer. I think the minutes will play itself out – you never have a frontcourt that stays 100% healthy all season. Everyone will get their chances if only out of necessity.

our TPE is getting to be like most fishing stories

it grows larger with each telling. :-)

$6.8M seems to have to grown to ~$9M. But 2/3 + 6/7 = a number that is not equal to the TPE. fwiw.

does knowing it’s a lower number change what you’d offer?

by magicfaninTN on Aug 11, 2009 8:14 PM EDT up reply actions

The TPE isn't $9 million but a few millions less.

GSW

have unloaded an expensive Jamal Crawford for expiring contracts, unloaded Marco Bellineli essentially for cash (toronto is paying most of George’s salary), and is looking to unload CJ … they just drafted Curry, + still have a slew of guards who will play minutes.

Any TPE resulting from a Watson trade is not going to be enough for them to do anything with (besides the last time they had a big TPE from the Jason Richardson trade they didn’t do squat). Orlando should hold that in case they need to add a player later as using some of it for Watson virtually eliminates it as useful later.

What GSW may be looking for is cash or a first rounder, but probably not both. Cash – their owner is in trouble with the IRS, and unloading Crawford + Bellineli + gaining cash for Watson would fit a pattern. 1st Rounder – the Magic will be pretty good we all expect, so that pick is probably a 20s-type slot. That has more value to GSW though because they have a conditional pick held up by a trade with the Nets for the now departed Marcus Williams. Gaining a 1st would allow them to use their own 1sts as trade assets that is not now possible due to the league rule prohibiting clubs from trading 1st Rd picks in sequential years.

the long and short of it is Orlando can have Watson, and probably for a conditional first OR cash, or more cash and the 2nd.

by hardcore on Aug 11, 2009 9:35 PM EDT reply actions

Sad as it may seem, I think you may be right. Cash may be the deciding factor.

by SteRanCo on Aug 12, 2009 12:20 AM EDT up reply actions

I should add that if Orlando wanted to swap Anderson for CJ Watson, that would seal the deal. Orlando is deep on the frontline and GSW is thin there, and visa versa at the guards. I do not think the Magic should do that, but GSW would probably leap at that.

by hardcore on Aug 12, 2009 1:32 AM EDT up reply actions

Never.

The Magic aren’t dealing Anderson — he’s clearly a better player than Watson. Frontcourt’s obviously loaded, but the Magic could get a better PG than Watson for Anderson, if they wanted to trade Anderson.

(Which I doubt they will, at least for now. They don’t even know if Bass at PF is going to work out.)

He's currently two-thirds man, one-third amazing. Which, let's face it, is still a pretty good ratio.

by 3.3seconds on Aug 12, 2009 3:45 AM EDT up reply actions

Agreed.

Besides, Anderson seems to be the best option to run anything resembling last year’s “unconventional” lineup – big center, 4 shooters – with two 6’10" forwards to cause matchup problems.
