Around SBN: Explaining Jeremy Lin's Early, Surprising Success

[Antonio] McDyess chose the Spurs over the Pistons, who could not match the money the Spurs offered. The Orlando Magic, who played in the NBA Finals in June, also are believed to have offered him full mid-level money. The Cleveland Cavaliers, who had the NBA’s best record last season, also were bidders.

So Bass took the MLE with the Spurs instead of with the Magic

A few possibilities:
- The Spurs offered him a 3-year deal for the MLE. Orlando probably offered him fewer years.
- Or, in case the Spurs’ offer and the Magic’s offer are identical, it means Dice thinks the Spurs are closer to contention.

Or, something else.

.. I have an idea of why Dice may have passed over Orlando.

It's nothing more than a guess.

I actually rather not say, but I’m sure people can figure it out ..

We're running out of available players....

with only 8 guys on the roster, I’d like to see Otis start getting some deals done. Starting with the signing of Bass today.

Didn't count on...

(in the past two seasons)

1) Rashard Lewis signing
2) Rafer Alston Trade
3) Magic NBA Finals appearance
4) Vince Carter Trade

so, I’ll remain optimistic with Otis.

I didn't either.

But I meant signing Bass today, not ever.

by Ariel112 on Jul 9, 2009 9:32 AM EDT up reply actions

Why are you so sure about that?

It seems like Bass is at the top of the list at the moment, after Sheed and Dice. And the only option that is still young and Magic wanted all along.

I don't know if he's at the top of Smith's list.

.. I could ask. Not sure if Otis would give me a straight answer, though.

From what I heard, seriously .. don't count on Bass signing with the Magic.

He may, I’m not discounting the possibility, but what I’m hearing is that the team may not sign him.

The Spurs are really, really good at adding key pieces to their team

That’s why they are contenders practically every year…

Yay, Roger!

The offseason has been nutty

Huge improvements in the West:

Lakers (defending champs improving is scary) Spurs & Mavericks

Huge improvements in the West:

Magic, Celtics, Cavs

There’s going to be 5-6 powerhouses competing for the championship.

I am incredibly happy that the Mavs did something this offseason

Instead of sitting around as usual.

Still a lot of big names out there to be signed, like David Lee, Odom, Iverson, Bass…

Yay, Roger!

by Marie on Jul 9, 2009 9:56 AM EDT up reply actions

I think Odom will be back in LA. Not sure about Lee or Bass. If Iverson keeps insisting he’ll retire if he’s not a starter, then he’s retired. The Answer’s no longer a start-quality guard.

He could be

But he’d need the right role. The problem for him is that any team which is contending already has a good answer at guard, any team which is rebuilding doesn’t want a veteran PG, and any team which is in the middle has a better PG, or doesn’t play the right style for Iversen.

Rock and a hard place

I think MEM is considering him, however.

Yay, Roger!

by Marie on Jul 9, 2009 11:06 AM EDT up reply actions

Not sure about MEM

I know MIA is looking at Iverson. I’m not sure that’d be good size-wise, though. An Iverson/Wade backcourt would be small – 6’0" and 6’4".

As much as size matters...

Dwyane wade’s size has never come close to hindering him. That 6’4 stature still netted him over 100 blocks last season.

And while I’m not really an Iverson fan… He’s never let his size slow him down.

Memphis offered him a 1-year contract.

by Rebounder on Jul 9, 2009 3:37 PM EDT up reply actions

eh hem....

what was that?

“The problem for him is that any team which is contending already has a good answer at guard…”

My Lakers have an old scrub at starting PG, lol. HIs absolutely CLUTCH 3pt field goals in game 4 not withstanding of course, lol. Derek Fisher really needs to come off the bench next year. I love our backup PG’s though —Farmar and Brown are both great and young and one of them is our future PG. You guys didn’t see much of Brown, but he played really well in the playoffs and had major minutes in other rounds than the Finals.

The problem is that Iverson would not fit well with our system. But there are other places where he would work on a contending team. I could see him making a MAJOR splash with the Cavs for instance. I would actually be worried of such an alliance because he is a major upgrade over the crap they have now.

trade exception -- $7mm

the trade exception that the magic got in the marion deal could be huge. just as an example, it would allow us to trade jj ($3mm) and a first round pick to indiana for troy murphy ($11mm) or to washington for jamison ($11mm) if either team decides they want to dump salary. either of those guys (esp murphy) would be a great fit in our system.

It's a good piece to have and I expect Otis to possibly use it during the season.

spurs

the lineup of Duncan, Dyess, Jefferson, Ginobili and Parker is scary-good. maybe the best starting lineup in the league. all savvy veterans, all with huge playoff experience. i thank sweet jesus they’re in the west! can’t wait to see them clash with the lakers. and then you’ve still got really good teams out there in denver and dallas as well.

by pinthatd12 on Jul 9, 2009 12:26 PM EDT reply actions

It's good .. I think the Lakers lineup is just as good, if not a little better.

Nevertheless, you’re right, it’s good that both teams are in the West and not in the East.

I don't think the spurs are as good as everyone thinks

1) Tim Duncan is not even CLOSE to the level he was a few years ago. He, in my opinion, is an average player now.

2) Manu has been riddled with injuries for the last 2 years. Is he going to be healthy? If he is healthy will he be the same Manu as 2-3 years ago?

3) Parker is just awesome. Nothing bad to say about who i think is the best PG in the league. (yes, better than CP3)

4) Jefferson is also not an above average player anymore. He is a volume scorer and needs his shots. I don’t think that this is a good fit with the spurs.

5) Mcdyess was a GREAT pick up for them. Nevertheless, his production should fall sooner or later. Can this guy really play in the NBA in his 50’s?

by plyka on Jul 10, 2009 11:52 AM EDT up reply actions

No way Duncan is average

Even when playing dead on his feet at the end of the year he was not an average player. He was playing about as well as he always does before but thanks to the absense of Manu and the lack of support he had (excepting a fantastic Parker of course), he broke down early. The Spurs are much deeper and have more playmakers this year which means Pop will conserve Duncan more. They’re going to be much better this year and very dangerous.

That being said, I have little doubt that we’ll seed higher than them. Questions of team talent aside, Pop is going to throw a few games away to give Duncan his rest because he doesn’t think seeding matters. Late in the playoffs, with homecourt advangtage, I’ll take my Lakers over the Spurs. Still, I would rest easier if we didn’t have to play them.

Charles Barkley made a great comment

After the Spurs lost in the playoffs, he said that people think that Duncan will get some rest and come back fresh next year —the reality is that at Duncan’s age, an offseason does not refresh you and make your pains go away. An offseason just makes you older and HURT more. This was surprising, but i take Barkley at his word since he has been through this before. That is, an aging superstar big man.

Perhaps i’m selling the spurs short and giving the lakeshow too much credit, but I think that the lakers will beat the spurs easily. In fact, I think that the nuggets still have the advantage over the spurs, especially since they have no one to guard Carmelo.

No, the powers will be in the EAST next year. I’m worried about Boston/Cavs/Magic. Especially if the magic can get some more quality players on their roster.
