San Antonio
Is going to be a good team.. At least someone will challenge the Lakers.
Dice, would have been a perfect fit.

That was the last piece the Spurs needed and they landed him ..
.. I expect San Antonio to compete with Los Angeles in the West.

Good.
Denver and San Antonio should give the Lakers a run. If I am Portland I sign LO.

That would be dumb
LO is older than their core, plays the same position as LMA, loves big city life, and would eat up any remaining cap space they have. Not to mention, he’s gotten in the face of many of Portland’s players before. I also doubt he would be as willing to play off the bench there.
The only reason to sign LO would be to screw over the Lakers and that’s never a smart strategy.
I doubt Portland signs him ..

I disagree.
If it’s so wise to pass on these older quality FAs then why are former championship teams willing to do it? I think the Spurs and Celtic know a thing or teo about what it takes to win it all. Sometimes you gotta just bite the bullet and take a risk. Otis’ problem seems to be that he tries to balance every decision with the present and the future in mind and I think it’s a recipe for mediocrity.
I say, you’re either all in or you’re not. You can’t SAY you’re ready to spend whatever it takes to WIN NOW and then get cold feet when it’s time to pull the trigger. I think that’s the difference between the Magic and those teams. They will risk some of they’re future flexibility if they think it will give them the extra advantage for a ring today.
Of all the FAs we lost, this one hurts the most. I thought McDyess was a perfect fit for us and was the warrior and consummate pro we needed in our front court. I liked him better than Sheed even though he had less size and range.
Now it’s Bass or bust and IMO he was the weakest of the 3 PFs we sought for winning right now. Sure he’s young and could have more upside but upside doesn’t win rings now!
IMO, ANYTHING LESS THAN BASS WILL BE A FAILURE! GET IT DONE NOW OTIS!!!
They're willing to do it
Because their core player(s) are approaching the end of their prime and their championship window is rapidly closing. It really doesn’t matter to SA that they’re overpaying McDyess for multiple years because these next 3 years are probably the last years Duncan will be dominant and they wouldn’t be able to sign another major free agent with a few extra million bucks anyway.
Orlando is still very young and want to improve themselves for the future as well as now. That’s a legit concern and one that they’re wise to act upon.
Also, don’t blame this on Otis. I guarentee you that there isn’t a single GM who wouldn’t love to grab every big free agent they could. It’s the owner that imposes spending limits and forces the GM to comply.
Well, Otis has the green light to spend. That isn't the issue.
.. the issue is making smart personnel decisions. That’s key for the team.

Eh being able to go into the tax a few million
isn’t quite green light imo. Green light is Mark Cuban telling Nelson to take back longer, expensive contracts if he thinks it’s necessary to improve the team and supposedly losing millions on the team every year.
I agree though, it’s all about smart decisions.
Well, for the Magic, it's considered the green light.
Considering this franchise never goes into the luxury tax.

You could also take that entire first paragraph...
replace San Antonio with Boston, McDyess with Wallace and Duncan with Garnett and have an equally accurate statement.

I somewhat agree with you
But the trade for VC was basically our FA pickup and it took some guts by Otis to pull that deal. We gave up a young promising SG and some quality older vets for an aging All-star, but still arguably an upgrade to Hedo. As much as I liked Hedo, He wasn’t worth the financial strain that Toronto will place them selves in. I for one think the Magic should have been more vigilant in free agency, but I think we do have a core group of starters that can get this team back to the finals. All isn’t done yet though. I still have hope we can sign Marion (I think with the addition of VC, signing him would trump all the other signings/upgrades in the east) As far as filling out the roster, some league minimum guys would help and would it really matter who they sign to fill out the roster? Pretty much all the second tier FA’s left are similar and SVG doesn’t like to go deep into the bench anyway. AJ, Ryan, and JJ I believe will be able to give quality minutes and not be detrimental when out on the floor giving the starters a breather.
Marion is and was never coming to Orlando.

Less than Bass? I can't even imagine.
Look. We have Lewis, a PF who should play 36 MPG. We have Anderson, a PF who played 20 MPG last year, and whose play may well command more this year. So we’ve already got a logjam at the 4. Bass is a one-position player; he’s not a center, and he’s not a SF. Where exactly is he going to get minutes?
What we need for our fourth big man is a big rebounder who can back up Dwight. Bass is an average rebounder at best — his numbers last year were almost identical to Battie’s — and while maybe you could stretch and play him at center, why even create that question? Why not just hire an actual center?
There are bigger men with more rebounding talent who can be had for way cheaper — Pops Mensah Bonsu, for example. Bass doesn’t fit our needs, either in terms of his position or in terms of what he’s good at.
Yeah, and we broke your damn shot clock too.

Did you see the season?
Lewis played PF for us all year, and was arguably the main key to our offense’s success. Opposing PFs couldn’t handle his outside shooting. Moreover, he was statistically well above average on defense. The only thing Lewis doesn’t do as well as the league’s best PFs is rebounding.
Which is a) not a massive deal in the starting lineup, given that Dwight more than makes up for it, and b) the reason we so strongly need an ace rebounder when Dwight is not on the floor. Bass is not that guy — statistically, he’s no better than Tony Battie as a rebounder. And he’s also no better than himself in 2007-08, so it’s not like he’s developing an improved game on the boards.
Yeah, and we broke your damn shot clock too.

I don't expect the Magic to sign Bass.
.. as you said, the team is set at the 4 and it, sort of, doesn’t make sense signing him even though he’s a good player. As for your comment, spot on. A ‘rec’ from me.

Would they hurry up and not sign him, then?
I feel like I’ve had to make this post twenty times in the past week. :)
Yeah, and we broke your damn shot clock too.
Well, it's tough because certain teams have money to spend and also ..
.. Otis is trying to do his best to maintain flexibility for the future. That’s partly why the Vince Carter trade is a smart one and why I think he’s holding off on signing certain veteran’s long-term.
After speaking with a few people, Rasheed Wallace was never going to come here and neither was Antonio McDyess. It’s clear that both options weren’t really realistic, even though the team had interest.

I don't understand..
How how/why we keep letting every piece slip by. We’re going to be a luxury tax team and not have a whole lot to show for it. At some point you have to bite the bullet and pay for a piece if you need it.
Obviously Otis knows something I don’t. “Trust in Otis”, right?
Patience is a virtue.
Doesn’t make sense overpaying for McDyess and Wallace, as good as a fit both players would have been.

Question
How can you call it overpaying, if more then one GM/Owner is willing to pay it? That is the going price for Quality Vet. Big men.. We weren’t willing to pay the going price, but it wouldn’t have been overpaying.
I want to win, right now you need to give up the cash if you want to improve your team. We still have our 3 All-Stars from Last Year, so the team isn’t in ruins, but the teams that finished with a better record then us last year are getting better(by adding quality players).
"No matter where you go, you are what you are playa"-Jay Z
Those other teams are overpaying, too.
.. thing is, sometimes they have an easier time of making it work.

the way anderson is playng our biggest hole is SF, cant count on MP to stay healthy all season. I like Bass though.
Otis is aware of that and will fill the position, accordingly.
.. there’s still plenty of players, available.

Lewis should not be playing the 4 this year
yeah, he was an all-star there, but he’d probably also be an all-star at the 3. he creates mismatches wherever you put him. we need a legit 4 who can rebound, block shots, defend, make jumpers (at least to 15-17 feet) and assert himself physically. otherwise, dwight stands alone in the middle and we’re going to get punked by KG/Perkins/Sheed and Shaq/Varejao/Ilgauskus. We can’t ask Dwight to do it all. And we are also best off with MP coming off the bench and backing up Vince and Rashard at the 2/3. Ideally, we need a 4 who is a veteran and who can play alongside Dwight or back him up. What we need is Rasheed or McDyess!! I’d have preferred Dice. Losing him is devastating. The options are now really thin, unless Otis has a Millsap or Tenacious Lee trick up his sleeve. Bass is fine, but he’s not a guy I want in my lineup down the stretch in game 6 against cleveland/boston next year. I’m willing to give Otis the benefit of the doubt until he proves himself wrong, but right now? Not looking too good. ps- we absolutely should not match for Gortat unless we can trade him for a real asset. We can’t pay $5mm+ to a guy who is a true center, and who can’t really play effectively at the 4.
Why don't people realize that Rashard is staying at the 4
…until Stan changes his whole game plan. The same game plan that almost got us a championship.
Lewis should and will start at the 4, until further notice.
The Magic just need a big man that can come off the bench and play alongside Dwight when it’s necessary to add a bigger body that can defend and rebound the ball. Rashard can do everything, except rebound.
In the end, it’s not a glaring issue but something that can be easily remedied.

Stan will find a way to play the most talented players on his roster
The reason Rashard was at the 4 last year is because we did not have a true PF, and the only reason he will be at the 4 this year will be if Otis does not do his job (or DeVos does not allow him to) and bring in a true 4. We have been constantly mentioned in the mix for Rasheed, Dice and Bass, and we have not been in the mix for Artest, Ariza, MWilliams, etc. The reason? Otis and Stan clearly recognize that we would be better served with a conventional lineup. Rashard will only be back at the 4 by default.
The thing is...
…there really was only one FA that would’ve moved Rashard down and that was Rasheed.
I doubt that they would’ve started Dice; he probably would have been Dwight’s main backup.
Bass would not start on this team and would have trouble competing with Anderson for those backup minutes because he is the prototypical 4 for our system. And this is just me, but I don’t like him as Dwight’s backup.
I agree with you that it would be ideal to have a “true” PF, but one with a respectable 3-pt shot to spread the floor for Dwight. Rasheed would have been perfect. In fact, we already have one in Anderson. He won’t start this year (most likely), but it does give us different looks and a great young prospect who could really thrive in this system.
Sorry to be harsh, but you're like .. dead wrong.
The reason why Rashard Lewis played the 4 last year is because he creates so many mismatches on the floor, offensively. There’s not a lot of PF’s in the league that can effectively guard him and the fact he is able to defend opposing 4’s above-average, statistically, makes everything work for the team.
Stan has no intention of moving Lewis away from the 4 unless he absolutely feels that’s the best decision for the team. I’m getting sick and tired of hearing this lazy argument about moving Rashard to the three. Enough. I know it’ll never end because people don’t know any better, but .. goodness.
The Magic were never in the mix for McDyess and Wallace. And even if they were, it wasn’t with the intention of moving Lewis to the three. It was with the intention of bringing either player off the bench ..
.. most likely.

Rashard
Rashard has been all-star at SF and PF. I think Orlando could go more conventional and still be highly effective. We would have 3 starters who shoot a solid % from 3 point and 2 coming off the bench. I just think we can do a better job on the boards by sliding Lewis down. Either way he is going to get his!!

Swagger
is a big part of the issue too. When ‘Shard is at the 4, he’s undersized and is fighting for his life every night. Swagger is why Detroit (led by Sheed and Dice) and healthy Celtics (led by KG) have dominated us. With Dice at the 4, we’d have had extraordinary swag. Now we’ll likely be a soft/finesse team again (at least at playoff cruch time, which is the time that matters most). A damn good finesse team, but still. And don’t think Vince brings much perimeter swag either (a la Pierce or Kobe) — Vince is super-skilled, but let’s be honest, he’s softer than cookie dough.
ya, he's totally soft.......i mean he's barely an upgrade of any of our past SG's
He can barely drive to the hole or hit an open J
I mean, this video totally proves it http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4qxxnUR-X-s&feature=related

Uh yeah, about that.
Wasn’t that the exact criticism that people were levying against the Lakers? Besides, you guys have Dwight freaking Howard, the guy is wider than I am tall. I’d call him many things but soft is not one of them.
shawn marion
wow, the mavs are making some serious noise. with a core of dirk, kidd, terry, howard, marion and gortat, they’re pretty legit.
now that they got marion they officially have a logjam in the frontcourt and will almost certainly not be in the hunt to sign bass.
oh really? getting a TPE would be great
anything that gives us more cap space/flexibility is a big plus.
now that sheed and dice are off the board, i’d be content to end up with bass, delfino and either ratliff or gooden. delfino was really tough against us in the playoffs 2 years ago — love his game.
None of those guys are coming into Orlando.
Bass, maybe, but no one else.

Rashard -- good debate
Look, I’m glad you guys disagree with me. It makes me feel better that legit, hardcore fans feel good about Rashard at the 4. I continue to disagree. Don’t take it personally, I just have a different perspective.
Reports are that we made a full MLE offer to McDyess. We did not make that offer to bring him in to back up Dwight for 10 mins a night (just like we won’t match for Gortat to back up Dwight). We made the offer to start him and move Rashard to the 3. Rasheed was a top priority for us — we had talked to his agent very early and tried to schedule a face-to-face. He was not being recruited to back up Dwight, he would’ve started at the 4. Bass’s agent has confirmed that we are at the front of the pack for him. He would likely start at the 4.
This is all indicative that Otis and Stan agree with my view that a true starting PF is the right answer/priority. Also, I loved the way Pietrus played off the bench last year, and would really like to keep him there as a mercurial sparkplug 6th man. I think this is also part the thinking in trying to make a move which would allow us to move Lewis to the 3.
The gimmicky/mismatchy approach was fun and successful (and was aided by having a 6’10" small forward (Turk)), but it is time for us to continue our evolution toward a conventional championship-level lineup, and the priorities of the organization reflect this.
McDyess & Wallace are one of the few guys in the NBA that would have started at the 4 for Orlando.
.. but there’s no guarantee that was the case. I got no indication from Stan that was the plan. Regardless, as I said elsewhere, Rasheed was never going to land here. Neither was McDyess, when push came to shove. I doubt Bass signs with the team, either, because I’ve heard indications that there’s some ..
.. apprehensiveness to sign him.
It’s not a gimmicky approach. Not when the Magic were #1 in defensive efficiency last year. Gimmicky is using a strategy that only works sometimes. What Orlando did last year was far from gimmicky.
The priorities of the organization is to replace Gortat, first and foremost, if he were to leave. It’s not to move Rashard Lewis to the 3. Stan has already indicated that he would prefer to keep him at the 4.

I get the efficency stat
but, the Lakers and Cavs head great looks inside and out vs US. We were lucky the Cavs big men have zero offense because they would have exposed us. Lakers exposed us, they pretty much got any quality look they wanted.

I got wind from a few people.
.. and I trust their connection to the story. It comes down to the fact Bass doesn’t exactly fill a need, that’s what the apprehensiveness is all about, even though the team has a bit of interest.
