Around SBN: Why We're Skeptical Of LeBron James

[T]he Orlando Magic are reportedly looking at some other options for their frontcourt. Sources have indicated that their top priorities are Detroit free agent forward Antonio McDyess and Dallas' Brandon Bass. The plan would be to split the Mid-Level Exception between those two guys, either of whom could play significant time at the four alongside Dwight Howard.

[....] With Dallas having devoted so much energy and money in free agency already, Bass is clearly available, and as Detroit gets younger McDyess may wish to play for a team with a better chance to contend immediately. The only question is whether or not a split exception will be enough to nab both.

Joel Brigham of HOOPSWORLD says the Magic will hope to split the mid-level exception on Brandon Bass and Antonio McDyess.

If true, I don't understand it.

Even if Bass and Dice were to take massive paycuts in order to split the MLE, which they won’t, the Magic would have an unfortunate logjam in their frontcourt.

Think about it: 96 minutes to allocate at PF and C. Dwight Howard and Rashard Lewis will, conservatively, account for 70 of those minutes. Now you have 26 to divide between Dice, Bass, and Ryan Anderson. It doesn’t work, unless you play Lewis at the 3 a little bit, and then you’ve compromised what makes the Magic’s offense work.

If Otis Smith splits the MLE, he needs to do it at 2 guys who play different positions.

Yeah, it doesn't make sense to sign both guys.

I think McDyess is a better fit

But, he concerns me. Bass is really undersized for a PF. I’m not sure who the perfect player out there for Orlando is quite honestly.

Nice new avatar btw.

The more I think about it

I think the Magic would be better off trying to trade for one of those guys who can play PF/C.

McDyess would be a perfect fit.

.. can play the 4 or 5. Can play alongside Howard and Lewis. Defends. Rebounds. He’s a nice veteran guy that would be a good presence in the locker room. I don’t see many cons.

I know

But since he’s probably going to the Spurs, it seems like a moot point.

We’ll see how this plays out. I’m not sure Brandon Bass would be any better for the Mavs than Gooden, but that’s my opinion.

Of course they are...

But we’ll have to settle for leftovers. No biggie,if you look hard, you can always find some jewel (bit of luck helps, too)

by Dzogi on Jul 8, 2009 11:43 AM EDT up reply actions

McDyess is the key

He can start at PF and put in minutes at backup center. Bass I believe can only play PF? McDyess is worth the full MLE and salvages the loss of Battie and Gortat.

by Half-man Half-gortat on Jul 7, 2009 6:50 PM EDT reply actions

He could start at PF...

…if we didn’t already have a starting PF. Or if he were a starter. Other than that, no problem.

Yeah, and we broke your damn shot clock too.

by 3.3seconds on Jul 7, 2009 6:51 PM EDT up reply actions

To be honest, I want to stop hearing about signing big men.

Not that we don’t need a backup center. But we need another SF around fifty times more than that. And we don’t need a PF. We’re going to have enough trouble finding time for the two PFs we already have. Adding another PF would do more harm than good.

Yeah, and we broke your damn shot clock too.

by 3.3seconds on Jul 7, 2009 6:53 PM EDT reply actions

I disagree. The Magic landing McDyess is the most important thing the team needs to do, in my opinion.

.. or a guy like him.

Here's the comparison as I see it.

At center, we have Howard. Howard is going to play 36+ minutes a night, and there’s a good chance he’ll get through the season without missing a single game. We need a guy who can give him a rest, and that’s about it.

At PF, we have Lewis getting 36 mpg, and Anderson, who probably deserves 20-25 mpg.So we’re around 10-12 minutes over at that position already.

At SF, we have Pietrus. Pietrus is a borderline starter to begin with; you probably don’t want him playing more than 30 mpg. Moreover, there’s a good chance he’s going to get hurt at some point during the season. We do have more guys who can play SF in an emergency than we have guys who can play center; unfortunately, the two guys who can play SF are also our starting SG and our starting PF.

I will say this right now: we will be seeing Anderson and Lewis playing together on a semi-regular basis. (Maybe for that 10-12 minute overlap.) Which will go a long way toward easing our need for minutes at the 3. But still… even with Pietrus in the lineup, we need more minutes at the 3.

And I predict we’ll be without Pietrus for at least 20 games next year. I hate to say it, but historically, that’s what happens to Pietrus. Not saying he’s not a good player, just saying that our plans need to anticipate what we do without Pietrus.

Yeah, and we broke your damn shot clock too.

I don't disagree with anything you said ..

.. but if the Magic can land McDyess, they have to. His ability to play the 4 & 5 is invaluable.

Yeah, I'm pro-McDyess too. He'd be a great addition.

I’m just confused by why the talk seems to focus so heavily on finding a backup for the superstar who basically doesn’t get injured, as opposed to finding one for the guy who lost his starting job last year and has never played a full season.

Yeah, and we broke your damn shot clock too.

by 3.3seconds on Jul 7, 2009 7:14 PM EDT up reply actions

dyess and bass

both see a lot of minutes at center. i don’t think we would be logjamming pf, rather creating the options we need in our front court to match other teams. with dyess there is the option of playing him at 5 as a substitute for dwight as well as the option of playing a big line up of howard dyess and lewis in the front line. bass played more center than pf last year so a line up of bass at 5 lewis 4 and anderson 3 is possible if, with his size, we feel the need to compensate for length. bass could also play the 4 alongside dwight against more stout front lines. i agree we need a small forward but i think the power forwards we are interested in have the capability of playing multiple positions for us, therefore maximizing our ability to match other teams.

Nah' mean, nah'm sayin

Bass is 6'8", regularly gets outmuscled in the post, and is a mediocre rebounder.

All this vague praise of him doesn’t change those facts. He’s a shorter, more athletic Tony Battie with a somewhat better offensive game.

Yeah, and we broke your damn shot clock too.

We didn't let any big men walk away, though.

Except Gortat, who we could have if we were willing to pay $5 million for him. Which of course we’re not, because we don’t have the playing time at center for a $5 million guy.

Yeah, and we broke your damn shot clock too.

Dice ---a real gem

If you guys get Dice, then I would be afraid of you guys next year. In my opinion, he is the most solid player available at the price you guys are willing to pay. And for a reason that no one here has mentioned —-mid range jumper. His mid-range game is very very solid. This is a guy who can easily put up 20 points in a night without getting out of character.

I wish the lakers would sign dice.

by plyka on Jul 8, 2009 12:01 AM EDT reply actions

Dice and Bass would be the perfect combo to add. Move Rashard to the 3, start Bass, bring Dice and Anderson off the bench to back up the 4 and the 5 (with Dice getting more run than Anderson), and bring Pietrus off the bench to back up the 2 and the 3. Then just need to sign a vet minimum PG and C and the roster is set. Cruch-time playoff lineups would be either Howard, Dice, Lewis, Carter, Jameer or Howard, Lewis, Pietrus, Carter, Jameer — depending on matchups. Only problem? It’s gonna be really tough to get Bass and Dice to split our MLE.

by pinthatd12 on Jul 8, 2009 12:04 AM EDT reply actions

and FAs dont seem to see how perfect those lineups are, so the Magic may have to just win one title first, and then the FA game could be the other way around
