Leon Powe

What do you think about getting someone like Leon Powe on the cheap. He averaged 10 boards/36 when he was healthy and would be a great guy to throw in at the end of the rotation when he is healthy. He is also only going to be 26 this season, which is another plus. He will likely not be back until the end of the all-star break, but that shouldn't matter too much.

We are building a team to compete in the playoffs. He plays good defense and would be a good change of pace at the 4 behind Lewis/Anderson if we have match up problems or just need to get more physical. Any thoughts?

it would be a rather gamble

I admit that. But if we could get his services for cheap and stash him away, it could be worth it in the long run. I’ve heard his rehab is going well. I’m not saying we should do it, but that it should be considered. It would be a calculated gamble IMO, depending on the pricetag.

The Magic can't afford to wait for him. That's why the Celtics let him go ..

I don't see why not

It’s not like he’s going to be commanding the full MLE or anything. Sign him to a 2-3 year deal that’s heavy on incentives and short on guarantees and let him use up a roster spot that most likely would have gone to a scrub anyway. If he fully recovers, you get a year or two of one of the best bargains in the NBA and maybe even a discount in resigning for taking a chance on him. If he doesn’t, there’s no real loss.

I don’t see how this is riskier than signing an unknown from the D-League to a contract. At least with Powe you know his work ethic, you know his talent, the only question is his health. Hell, I wouldn’t mind if the Lakers signed him, even though he helped destroy us. He’s one of the few Celtics I actually like.

I get what you're saying, but the Magic can't afford to tie up a roster spot ..

.. with a guy that is only going to play half the year. That’s a risky move. I definitely get and understand your counter-argument, but it’s tricky business with that type of move.

I suppose so

I just hope some team signs him somewhere. I see so many teams with a 8 player rotation who could have literally anyone fill spots 9-13 and it wouldn’t matter. Those teams would be smart to take a risk on Powe, imo.

Not saying Orlando has an 8 player rotation

but even Orlando probably won’t see much of players 13-15 except in blowouts.

Powe will sign somewhere. He's too talented not to land with someone.

I like his toughness and great rebounding rate. But Erivera made the best point, Magic cant afford to pay and wait really…
