What the Magic need

Currently, we have the following players:

PG - Jameer Nelson, Anthony Johnson

SG - Vince Carter, JJ Redick

SF - Mickael Pietrus

PF - Rashard Lewis, Ryan Anderson

C - Dwight Howard

We obviously need a small forward and a center. We also need at least two other players to meet the 12-man requirement. In my opinion, we need another guard (preferably one who can play PG or SG) and a physical power forward (both Lewis and Anderson are low on the physicality scale). Who's available that I like? A few guys. I don't expect to get all of them (or even more than one - this is definitely a Wish List), but the guys I like that we have a shot at are:

1. Marvin Williams (SF). He's quick, has a good long 2, and is young.

2. Drew Gooden (PF). His mental lapses will drive us nuts, but he provides a big body, and he played better last year than in the last couple years.

3. Johan Petro (C). Not a good finisher, but his potential intrigues me. He's a 7-footer with good foot speed and good hands (1.63 steals/36 minutes).

4. Keith Bogans (SG). Yes, seriously. I'd like to have him back. Even though I said I want a combo guard, I don't see a good one out there.

Gooden maybe.

He’s better now then when he played here. Think he learned some stuff playing with LeBron. Can rebound and bang, o.k. defense. Just a little loopy.

I hadn't heard that

He’s good, but I’m not sure he’s 7.3 million good. That will make finding a good SF harder – Kleiza and Moon are both RFAs, Grant Hill’s age has me a bit wary about him, and there’s just something about Shawn Marion that makes red flags go up – I can’t put my finger on it, but something about him makes me want him on another team.

marvin williams 7.3?

then i think Otis smith is better off trying to pursue still Sheed, we can get bogans
and we definitely have to trade redick for additional draft picks
maybe we can go after dice and kleiza too…(definitely have to this guys will help dwight get some spacing)
what do you guys think?
i mean Otis has to act now or the VC trade will go out irrelevant because we haven’t payed our cards

Redick isn't getting traded for draft picks.

McDyess is looking like he’s staying in Detroit, and I doubt Kleiza lands in Orlando.

Word has San Antonio pursuing him rather vigorously.

Who are we vigorously chasing? I guess we are just waiting for the dust to settle and duct tape together the scraps.

It's one of those unwritten rules of free agency

Your own team is never vigorously chasing anyone. If we were Spurs fans, there’d be a hubbub about Orlando having gotten the jump on us chasing Dice, and we needed to catch up, blah blah blah…

Bogans could play the rest of his career here, it wouldnt bother me.i think just having him at practices make the team better(we had no way to stop 2 guards after he left). petro maybe dont know a bunch about him.

i like moon he doesnt have to take shots or have the ball to be effective his D is OK, but i hear wade really likes him so just dont see that happening.

what about…Pops Mensah-Bonsu? 5 & 5 in 12 min …those are gortat #’s didnt see him play a bunch so i dont really know if he can D up or not, but the raps have to give his rights up now. if im not mistaken he went to school in Mt Dora.

by D-RAK on Jul 6, 2009 9:45 AM EDT reply actions

I thought Big Daddy went to school in New Jersey

He was also extended a qualfying offer last week.

One that I had overlooked is Ike Diogu. His season numbers weren’t strong (4.1 points, 1.9 rebounds per game), but when he got minutes, he did better (20.3 points, 7.8 rebounds in 29.3 minutes per game at the end of the season).

The Raptors have to renounce his rights to make room for Hedo Turkoglu.

I’m a big Pops fan, back to the days when he played at George Washington.

I doubt Otis Smith is considering Mensah-Bonsu at all, though.

Mensah-Bonsu is the only Raptors player I'd be particularly interested in..

(Well, except Bosh.) Not entirely sold on him as a scorer or defender, but the man can rebound, and that’s what we need. And I think he could manage playing the 5. Not that he’s unique or special, but he would be an effective player for us, I think.

- Williams is too expensive for the Magic.
- Gooden is an option .. though I’m not a full-fledged supporter of him being signed.
- Petro is terrible, no.
- Bogans is an option, too.

To be honest, I don't see too many guys that I'm a full-fledged supporter of

Everyone’s either going to be expensive or come with limitations.

Unless Denver gets stupid and lets Birdman go cheap, there aren’t a whole lot of good centers out there this year. Once Okur decided to stay, Gortat was essentially the best center left in free agency. Other than Marcin, you’ve got Sideshow Bob, Birdman, Zaza, and then the Petro/Voskuhl sort where you hope to get someone that won’t lose games for you.

i say sign a SF (Moon), a third C at the min. a PG. and take a gamble on signing Gortat with the hopes of being able to trade him before feb. theres a few teams that will be in dire straits come feb looking for a C, plus if were not moving in the right direction it gives us more flexability. someone will be glad to take him off our hands and give us an asset by feb.

Glen "Big Baby" Davis

Celtics will not match offers near the MLE for him now, esp. with ‘Sheed standing to take his minutes.
The Spurs, you know.. that one team that has dominated the NBA with the Lakers the last decade or so.., will likely throw the MLE at Glen Davis.
This is one of the last PF’s I would want and start with Dwight. He may not rebound great, but his offense is blooming and his shooting is great, he has the low, heavy body to defend other big men and make it easier for Dwight to rebound and play. Magic ought to start talks with him.

Nate Robinson!

Nate is a short, combo guard who usually plays as the headline of the bench at backup PG.
He can play starter at 2 and put Vince at 3 making the Magic shorter but faster and much more capable of putting up shots, its counter-intuitive by being short but Robinson is excellent at getting good shots off almost any time. He averaged 17PPG last season, and its obviously a little skewed with the D’Antoni system, but that’s mighty impressive nonetheless.
He does have a score first instinct, and if its too hard to mesh with the starters, then he can get his minutes from the bench behind Nelson. Nelson plays a score first PG too btw, but he controls it well with good PG instincts, and the PG style does not change from Nelson to Nate. Nelson does not play heavy minutes like Lewis, Howard, so this is good for Nate and good for Nelson’s health and energy.
Putting Nate at backup SG too will work if VC/MP move to 3 whenever they’re in. Nate is a decent defender actually, b/c he is quick and plays with high energy. Nate off the bench whether at 1 and/or 2 would make the Magic have very potent bench firepower, especially if he shows he can play off the ball more and look to pass. MP was the bench scorer for the Magic, but he stands to keep his PPG modest as the primary SG/SF Starter and Defender for the others to do what they do, so adding Nate to the bench force makes it a geat move in my mind.

by derekk on Jul 6, 2009 3:37 PM EDT reply actions

Starting Jameer and Nate together would be a complete disaster, defensively.

.. goodness. I don’t even want to think about that possibility, because it scares me.

Robinson isn’t a decent defender. He’s below-average, statistically.

Yea, I was trying to get creative for his min.s He only makes sense I guess behind Nelson, but its incredible insurance at the PG spot. And also if JJ can play besides Nelson, why can’t Nate.

I feel ya, Ill deftly concede thats a bad fit. But keep in mind Nate is quicker and plays with so much energy. There’s still some things that arent quantified by height, and even stats some times. They are incredibly good indicators, but indicators nonetheless. But ya, I see the bad fit. Was just trying to throw some thoughts out there, and as usual I dont think them through enough hehe.

by derekk on Jul 6, 2009 11:34 PM EDT up reply actions

Bear in mind

The matchup difficulties starting a 6’10" guy at SF created for us last season.

Now imagine being on the end of those matchup difficulties as any SG over 6’ (so, all of them) drains shots over Nate all day.

by eltharion_doa on Jul 9, 2009 3:59 PM EDT up reply actions

Since most good FA's are off the board

I say we sign Marion as our starting SF. He would fit in perfect and is an upgrade on defense, rebounding, and finishing at the hoop. Then we can sign some backups at the vets minimum. Lots of Backup F/C’s out there that aren’t getting the attention, but I’m sure a training camp under Patrick Ewing and going up against DH every day will improve their game (Just ask Gortat).

by Jimmys on Jul 6, 2009 4:19 PM EDT reply actions

Upgrade on defense? He's not good on D anymore.

.. besides, the Magic won’t be able to afford him and he wouldn’t be a good fit. Pass.

by derekk on Jul 6, 2009 11:15 PM EDT up reply actions

A real wild card...

We could tender an offer to Josh Childress. He’s still an RFA, but if Atlanta’s paying Williams 7.3M, they can’t afford to match offers. There’s been an upswing of fan violence in Greece against players, so he may want out of Olympiakos.

The T-Wolves also declined their team option on Rodney Carney. He’s struck me as somewhat like Pietrus – highly athletic, but needs some mental development. I’m not sure I’d want two questionable decision makers at SF, but I think he’s still available.

Childress was going to meet with Milwaukee

The word on the street is that Atlanta will bluff about paying to keep his rights if anyone else looks at him, but they won’t actually do it. Childress doesn’t like ATL, and the team doesn’t like him at this point, so there’s no point in them holding on. I’d be more than willing to take a stab, but I think he might want more than the MLE.

by farfromfl on Jul 7, 2009 12:30 AM EDT up reply actions

This is way off the map...

…because he’s under contract. So yeah, seems unlikely. But how about Hamed Haddadi? Rookie center out of Iran, led the Olympics in rebounds and blocks, played for Memphis last year… averaged 2.5 points and 2.5 boards, plus 0.6 blocks, in 6.3 minutes per game. Only 19 games, but still — reminiscent of ’07-08 Gortat.

And I’m not saying the Grizzlies are definitely willing to trade him, but look at the Grizzlies. They’ve got Thabeet and Marc Gasol at center — two young guys who need the playing time. They can’t really play PF, and neither can Haddadi. Anyway, down at PF, they have Zach Randolph now, and then Darrell Arthur in the same boat. They don’t need Haddadi, and they’re paying him $1.5 million — I know, I know, big deal, but it’s more than the minimum, and the Grizzlies are way cheap. So that’s probably too much for their third-string center, but I’d say it’s a pretty good deal for a promising young backup.

Yeah, and we broke your damn shot clock too.

I'm game. For that matter, I'd be interested in what they'd trade Gasol for.

Since the Griz have been so astute in their past bargains. Sign and trade Gortat for Gasol and some waivable talent to keep money free.

by farfromfl on Jul 7, 2009 12:35 AM EDT up reply actions

Well, we don't have Gortat.

And the Grizzlies wouldn’t want him anyway — if they wanted a center, they’d just keep Gasol. And I’m not sold on Gasol myself; he’s another one of those guys who averages a little less than one rebound every four minutes.

That much having been said, I think he’s a little too much center for us, really — he’s not going to be happy with 12 mpg behind Howard, and we’re not going to be happy paying him $3.3 million a year to do that. I feel like we’d be best served to keep our backup center below $2 million or so… we’re not asking him to do that much work.

Yeah, and we broke your damn shot clock too.

give me Jamario Moon,he plays good D rebounds and always seems to be in the right spot on the floor,i think he’s one of the better players in the league without the ball in his hands.I cant think of a reason why i wouldnt want him on my team.

give me a big that can defend for 10 min (Foyle)???

give me a banger…. teach Townes or Hendrix how to throw the peoples elbow give em a jersey.

by D-RAK on Jul 7, 2009 8:17 AM EDT reply actions

I do like Moon

The only downsides are he’s probably at his peak (he’s already 28), and he’s a restricted free agent on a team that can afford to keep him.

A Foyle-esque defender would be good, but I want someone with enough offense to keep the D honest. Our game relies on spreading the floor, and while we won’t have a Gortat this year, our backup needs to be someone that has the other team keeping an eye on him.

I like Hendrix. His wingspan’s good (7’3"), and I think he could get up to 265-270 through muscle development over the next couple years (based on his appearance and current 255 weight). Townes I don’t think will be worth signing.

Dice is the best PF out there, throw the full MLE at him I say. We always talk about how good a fit he’d be, now is the time for Magic to throw most or all of the MLE and possibly starter minutes in certain matchups, otherwise a good amt of min.s off the bench. Im not as sure about Bass as I initially was, but let’s see what happens there, and he is still young.
