Around SBN: Missouri Survives Scare, Louisville And Marquette Roll

An NBA source said tonight that Detroit free agent forward Rasheed Wallace has committed to sign with the Celtics on July 8 when free agents are able to sign. Wallace is expected to get a two-year deal using the mid-level exception (expected to be about $5.6 million to $5.8 million). Celtics All-Star trio of Kevin Garnett, Ray Allen and Paul Pierce, owner Wyc Grousbeck, coach Doc Rivers and president Danny Ainge met with Wallace last week. Wallace turned down overtures from Orlando and San Antonio to commit to Boston.

Well....I had a feeling it was gonna happen

Stil, I dont know how much Sheed is gonna be productive for them.

By not signing Powe though, they really are committed to winning now.

But look: We dont know how much KG has left (13 years player plus first major injury) and we dont know how much Sheed has left (was he really not motivated or is he really done at almost 35?) so Boston still got questions in the frontcourt.

Perkins is there only sure shot, I can take those risks…….

then again….We kinda need a frontcourt backup dont we fellas? lol

Haha, I feel ya on the frontcourt help. But I feel like Dwight will improve and mature more. It’ll get harder for them if Dwight has a face up shot or some new moves, plus the maturity to not show frustration when he’s getting fouled on alot on purpose. Dwight is so good, I trust him to keep getting better and beating those obstacles, plus the Magic already beat Celtics with Perks on Dwight, where KG and Sheed may not fare as well (assuming Dwight does not improve at all this season).

by derekk on Jul 5, 2009 9:02 PM EDT up reply actions

Orlando may have beaten Boston in the Semifinals but that was without KG ..

.. Garnett is the perfect defender for Lewis. Likewise, adding Wallace simply makes the Celtics frontcourt stronger. Dwight Howard needs to take his game to another level, offensively.

Its tough to get a FA when all the teams offer the same amt of money. Im happy for Sheed to be going where he wants to. He gets to play behind KG and Perks and solidify a great frontcourt.
Itll be interesting to see who the Magic will focus on, and if we’ll get a whiff of who they are chasing. Itll speed up the process now that Sheed is out too. Leaves only Bass as the last known FA I know Magic want, and Magic may not play themselves a chance with the full MLE which makes sense, I think.
I still hope they just get a vet min. backup center, leave Lewis and Anderson at the 4, and get SF depth, with some of the MLE or full, they can grab some good players still I think like Kleiza, Barnes, Hill. Most have suitors already, but with Sheed out of the picture Magic can continue the process and show interest in their other FAs.

Give me McDyess, Bass or a combo of the 2 PLEASE!!!

My main issue wih Davis?

His poor rebounding. He averaged only 4 rebounds in 21.5 minutes during the regular season, and then 5.6 in 36.4 minutes in the playoffs. We don’t need a big man who doesn’t rack up rebounds.

Yeah, and we broke your damn shot clock too.

sheed will help boston

because he is a legit big off the bench..boston just didn’t have enough size to beat orlando last year…with kg, perk and wallace and hopefully davis…they can match up with the magic. perk can do enough to bother howard…i also expect they will resign powe before this is all said and over with….KG on lewis is big and sheed gives them a big that can shoot…boston’s big big test is getting a legit wing (grant hill) off the bench to back up paul pierce. i thought orlando already agreed with bass??…if so..really like him off your bench…good news is i see the cavs going backwards right now…shaq is not enough for them to win the east. they are still too small….would love to see varajo screw them and go elsewhere

erivera, i completely disagree

The celtics will do NOTHING next year. I just do not see it. It’s true that as a lakers fan i absolutely hate the celtics, but during their championship run they had very nice qualities, i must admit. Powe and Posey were extremely important to the celtics. In my opinion, these two gave the celtics their “toughness.” It was definitely not KG. They will not have these two next year.

Furthermore, you have old granpa’s on the team. KG, Pierce and Allen are all around 34 years old. Old granpa wallace is like 36. I already see the decline in PIerce, although Allen is still up to this all-star level. KG, though, is coming off of a very serious knee injury at his old man age. This is not Bynum, at 21, getting healthy in a few months (even though he still can’t jump). This is old man Garnett at 34. He will lose athleticism, without doubt.

They are lacking. I put the Cavs and the Magic in front of the Celtics in the east. Of course the Lakers all the way in the west and in the finals next year.

by plyka on Jul 6, 2009 10:30 AM EDT up reply actions

Age and health will be an issue, but all that matters is being healthy at playoff time.

Doc Rivers will do the best he can to pace his players and not wear them down.

I stand by my statement because the Boston Celtics are a matchup problem for the Orlando Magic at full strength. Kendrick Perkins, alone, can stop Dwight Howard but now add Rasheed Wallace (another stopper), coupled with the return of Kevin Garnett (who can lockdown Rashard Lewis), and the boys in blue are going to have problems. The C’s are in it to win it now, not later.

ugh..

I wanted him for 2 reasons
1- He fits in perfectly to what we like to do
2-Keep him away from Celts..

:(

Oh well, we can fill our roster with multiple young players who fit our system.

Rats.

I was really hoping we’d be able to snag him…perfect fit for him on the Magic. It will be interesting to see where Orlando goes from here. Bass is now looking like the main target.

If the Celtics can stay healthy, I think this currently puts them over the top as the best team in the East. Not by a huge margin, but adding Wallace is pretty big for them. It’s also a very HUGE if for Boston staying healthy. The out-of-nowhere KG injury was not a good sign and Pierce was running on empty by the second round of the playoffs last year.

So really, Boston’s biggest obstacle will be its age and health. I’d be shocked if the Big 3 + Wallace all stayed healthy for 82 games…but I guess all that really matters is if htey are healthy come May.

Your move Otis.

by Lee for three on Jul 5, 2009 9:26 PM EDT reply actions

Pierce was running on empty because there was minimal support on the bench.

If the Celtics get Grant Hill, which it’s looking more and more likely, than Paul benefits. All in all, with Rasheed Wallace, Boston is the team to beat in the Eastern Conference next season. The key is health.

If they stay healthy...

Hill: 36 years old
Wallace: 34 years old
Garnett: 33 years old
Allen: 33 years old
Marbury: 32 years old
Pierce: 31 years old

Other than Rondo (who’s 23), all of their non-role players are old. Boston’s lineup looks great, but it could turn into a nightmare if they can’t stay on the court.

Sure, but that's 1 guy who's over 30

2, since we also have AJ (Lewis turns 30 next month). Not our entire team who’s better than Brian Scalabrine (who’s 31, by the way). We’ve got a much younger team overall:

Johnson 35
Carter 32
Lewis 29
Pietrus 27
Nelson 27
Redick 25
Howard 23
Anderson 21

Sure wud of liked to have Wallace.

Maybe we can get Marion with the Midlevel and possibly Pachulia with vets minimum (doubt it).

by Jimmys on Jul 5, 2009 10:50 PM EDT reply actions

Pachulia is definitely getting more than the vets minimum.

There’s a dearth of true centers in free agency right now. Pachulia was one of the better backup centers last year; not starting quality but still solid.

by Worthy J. on Jul 6, 2009 1:56 AM EDT up reply actions

McDyess seems like the next target

Given who is left on the market, but San Antonio is going to make a concerted effort to get him. After that, you have Bass, Gooden, Pachulia, and Nesterovic.

by Ben R on Jul 6, 2009 12:30 AM EDT reply actions

dannng

I wouldn’t mind Dice and Bass at this point. Dice short term would be just fine for me too, and get a better fit than Bass next year in free agency.

Gortat's Midlevel Contract Asset

Is there any reason why we would not match Gortat’s offer sheet and then trade him, to Dallas or elsewhere?

Are we expected to execute a S&T with Tornoto for a trade exception or Anthony Parker?

This isn't great...

Would have liked to see Sheed here, but wasn’t expecting it. That much having been said, maybe now we can stop fixating on big men and use the MLE on a small forward, which is actually our main need right now?

Yeah, and we broke your damn shot clock too.

by 3.3seconds on Jul 6, 2009 2:29 AM EDT reply actions

How is big man not a need?

We need a backup to Dwight far, far more than a backup to Pietrus. We have Lewis and could bring J-Rich back, plus SF is an easy position to fill anyway – there are loads more free agents available at SF, although not necessarily of great quality…

We definitely need a big man because Dwight’s as likely to be in foul trouble as not, and we literally do not have a single player on the roster who can even do an OK job at backup C.

by eltharion_doa on Jul 6, 2009 7:00 AM EDT up reply actions

Orlando needs a big man more than it needs a wing man.

Don’t get me wrong .. a wing player is a need, but the Magic need a body that can play with or without Dwight Howard. Signing someone like Antonio McDyess should be top priority, at this point.
