Anybody else thinking there's more homeless talent than money right now?
We've all been looking close at the FAs and thinking about how much it would take to sign them. I'm starting to wonder what the actual pool of money out there looks like. Lets have a look at the teams in the east, and what they're planning to sign this summer.
Atlanta is going to use their money locking up Marvin Williams. A qualifying offer of 7.3 mil is there to let everyone else know they mean business. They'll try to re-sign Bibby because they're comfortable with him. The Hawks need a true PG, but don't want to pay for one right now. (Ben, I caught you cheatin on Peachtree Hoops.)
The Boston Celtics have a full MLE extended to Rasheed Wallace. Apparently, he's keeping them waiting with his answer, to hear out other offers. Apparently, this is making Boston fans kinda nervous that Plan B will evaporate while Plan A is taking it's time. Plan B, by the way, is to split the MLE for Grant Hill and Antonio McDyess (They won't be that blessed. Only the Lakers are that blessed.)
Charlotte isn't the worst train wreck in the league anymore, but they'll still be in contention for at least the next two years. They've got the full MLE then they'll be pushing on the tax, but they don't want to spend much. The best player the Bobcats are even considering is Anthony Carter as a backup to Raymond Felton.
According to BlogABull, despite losing Ben Gordon, Chicago is strapped financially, and won't really be able to improve for next year.
The Cleveland Cavaliers have the full MLE and the 2 mil bi-annual up for grabs, and intend to use as much of it as neccesary to get either a former Pistons big, or a tall wing player like Grant Hill, Anthony Parker, Marquis Daniels, Josh Childress or Matt Barnes.
Detroit may not be signing anyone else, after their spending spree on Ben Gordon and Charlie V, but they're not done making moves. Expect either Rip Hamilton or Rodney Stuckey (I would automatically assume Hamilton if not for all of the statements out there by the team that he's staying.) to be traded before the season starts. With the firing of Coach Curry, the Pistons are in full blow it up mode.
Indiana has 8 mil to spend, but they are looking for bargain players. They're reportedly interested in Dahntay Jones (less than a mil last year), Anthony Carter, and Linas Kleiza. (Kleiza would be a great addition to fill out the Magic's SF rotation, BTW.) Pacer's GM Larry Bird say's they're in the midst of a "three year plan." Nothing flashy...
While D-Wade would prefer that Miami pick up some help so that they can win now, they are in 2010 mode. Don't expect much, although it's rumored that Iverson might be interested in going to the Heat. (To play PG to Wade's SG? That doesn't sound like a match made in heaven to me.) Riley wants to stand pat.
Milwaukee is looking at a full MLE that they might throw at Josh Childress, but that would prevent them from re-signing Ramon Sessions, who they would really like to keep around, in case Brandon Jennings is as bad as some scouts have been saying. (They drafted him because he might be as good as some scouts are saying, but it sounds, overall, like it's more athletics than skill and intelligence that's the buzz around Jennings.) If they re-sign Sessions, the Bucks are still going to have maybe half of an MLE to play with, until they move Bruce Bowen and Kurt Thomas in late August...
New York has offered Jason Kidd something in the range of 18 mil for 3 years, which is solid full MLE territory. Dallas offered him 25. So it seems the Knicks may still be on the hunt, maybe for a Grant Hill, or something else old. Seems Donnie Walsh's interested in old this year. Can't fathom why.
The Philadelphia fanbase seems extremely downtrodden, as a side note. To be honest, they don't seem to really have a direction this off-season, other than figuring out their PG spot. They don't like the idea of giving a long term contract to Andre Miller. They want a PG who's going to hold that spot for their rookie, (former HS player of the year) Jrue Holiday for two years. They threw out Brevin Knight... If that's not giving up on next year, I don't know what is...
The Washington Wizards have pretty much nothing to spend, but they're looking for a cheap big.
That boils down to either two above MLE deals, three MLEs, and five sub MLEs, unless Cleveland splits their money up, in which case we're looking at one, four, and six. I'll expect the latter. The Bucks re-signing Sessions would move one of those MLEs to a sub MLE as well.

Orlando can still get better .. just have to shuffle through the available players.
I think beginning next week, you’ll see Otis Smith start to work swiftly.

I agree.
I like what I saw about Nate Robinson this morning. I love that guy. I always have. He would be a great scoring addition. I’d love to see him play well enough to demand starters minutes at the two, pushing MP to backup 3 behind Visanity. (Probably pipe dreams induced by too much man-crush).
I don't think adding Nate would do any good .. he brings scoring, but that's about it.

After thinking about it more.
He’s an obvious liability on defense. I can see where he would be a fantastic asset towards the end of a game, where we can really put some firepower on the floor with him, Vince, Rashard, Dwight, and Jameer… but he’s such a liability on defense that I’m not sure I’d be comfortable giving him much run during the game to get his rythym going.
He’s an exciting player, that I love to watch, and he’s deffinitely a crowd favorite, but he’s not a great fit.
A bad fit.

Don't see it...
There’s no way we could play Robinson alongside Nelson in the backcourt. We need ONE guard over six feet tall. And I like Robinson in the right situation, but this is basically the most wrong situation possible.
Yeah, and we broke your damn shot clock too.
Agreed.

Marion ftw of course
The thing is the Magic started this offseason with some tremendous and expendable assets; Alston and Batties’ expiring contracts, Hedo’s Larry Bird exception, Gortat’s restricted status, and the Mid-Level Exception. They packaged Alston and Battie into a deal that netted Vince Carter, so those assets have payed off tremendously. What Otis now does with the remaining assets is yet to be seen, but for the sake of frugality it can be wagered that at least one asset will be used for cap relief, meaning it will just be allowed to pass away. Even using just 2/3 of the remaining assets could net us a significant upgrade at several positions, while say using only the MLE can at least fill out our rotation.
So basically it is within Otis’s means to significantly upgrade this team even further, but a likely route will be to upgrade talent to only a certain level while allowing some of the assets to pass into the night, lessening any financial burden that would result from cashing them in.

Marion wouldn't do much good with Orlando, in my opinion.
His shooting percentages are below-average, he’s inefficient, not a good defender, etc.
Too many minuses.

Marion was a beast with the Sun's transition game. I see him doing well with Orlando.
He’s still athletic. He rebounds well. The Magic are not a half court team. I don’t think he’ll ever be as productive as he was for D’antoni, but I’d take him just as quickly as I’d take Sheed. I think of him as Rashard, with slightly less shooting touch, more raw athleticism, and more muscle, which makes him a pretty decent power forward.
Marion at PF would be a disaster, defensively.
Dwight Howard would be able to mitigate that issue a little bit, but not entirely.

Not a good defender?
I’m aware that he’s declined since his days as a Sun but isn’t he still at least a good defender?
Not really, no.
adj. defensive plus/minus: -1.53
opponent PER vs SF’s: 16.6
net defensive plus/minus: +1.6
eFG% allowed: 52.4%
Those are his defensive stats with the Raptors. Below-average .. his numbers with the Heat were a little better. At the most, I’d say Marion is an average defender, but that’s about it.

But wasn't he playing out of position at SF with those teams?
Of course, that’s the position we need help at, so it’s a moot point. But still.
Yeah, and we broke your damn shot clock too.
Technically, no.
.. Marion’s numbers vs. PF’s weren’t good, either.

Couldn't last year simply be an anomaly?

Maybe, but I'd err on the side of no.
Ever since he left Phoenix, Marion’s numbers have dipped dramatically and I don’t think that’s a coincidence. His numbers without D’Antoni have been fairly consistent throughout his career.

All I know is that I'm starting to get fidgety
There’s months until the season starts but I want our roster set and bonding waaaaaay before then. A shake-up like this after a Finals run has to hit morale and team understanding hard, especially with new strategies for new players.

Most of the guys I'm interested in
Have either gone elsewhere or are going to want too much money.
None of the guys we’re being seriously linked with interest me in the slightest. ’Sheed did, but he seems to be going to the Celtics.
You know, I'm not convinced Sheed's gone.
Boston gave him the full court press, with the big three and he asked for a week to think things over and listen to other offers.
Sheed’s going to get the MLE, it’s just a question of with which contender. It’ll either be San Antonio, Boston, or Orlando. His decision shouldn’t have anything to do with money unless his concern is state income tax, and that can be avoided in two of his three destinations.
His decision will be made by three factors
1) What will his role be with the team?
2) How does he like the city?
3) What does he see the chances of a title as?
He did
What Hedo should have done.. Get whine and dined, then make a decision.

I'll just ask this here, as its somewhat related.
Should the Magic have bought into the Draft? Im starting to wonder if they should have…
No
The draft was incredibly shallow. Arguably very little beyond the top five.

The only player I felt the Magic should have tried for was DeJuan Blair ..
.. given that he fell into the second round and that would have been a low-risk, high-reward move.
That’s it.

I also wanted PMills.
Teams were happy to trade for picks in the 2010 daft

Or Calathes.
Would’ve been great to get him in ‘11 or so. No huge deal — there are prospects all the time. We can’t have them all – where would we put them?
Yeah, and we broke your damn shot clock too.
Yeah, I liked him too.
.. would have been nice to draft Calathes and stash him away for a few years.

I would have so loved them to get Calathes.
I’m really really biased, but a 6’6’’ PG with NBA 3 range and led the SEC in passing both of his years?

Just checked out ESPN
There are a bunch of players available.. does that mean the price tags are going to start to come down?

What?
Nelson is an All-Star and the leader of this team. There is no way we’re trading him.

You've been pretty adamant about trading Jameer a few times.
News flash, it’s not happening.

"Never hate your enemies. It affects your judgement." - Michael Corleone
Yeah
After some time to think I don’t want Nate, but I trading Jameer makes no sense. For one, no team is going to trade for him-You got factor in the injury, salary, and magic asking price. Plus, he is a perfect fit what we do and I wouldn’t trade him anyway..
"No matter where you go, you are what you are playa"-Jay Z
Why would we trade Nelson?
Out of all PGs, the dude was:
5th in PER
3rd in True Shooting %
13th in Turnover Ratio
15th in Usage Rate
15th in Defensive Rebound Rate
If you multiply out based on him playing a full season, he’d also be 5th in Value Added – the only better point guards would be Paul, Parker, Harris, and Williams. Trading Nelson would be a catastrophically bad move.

What's up with all this TRADE NELSON talk?
Drop it,it makes no sense. Here’s the idea:
let’s trade Dwight.
/more than sarcastic
It's just caputrukahs, who has been on the 'trade Jameer' bandwagon and quite frankly, that's idiotic.

Robinson isn't a good defender, and is anti-clutch, especially on defense.
When Nate’s on the floor normally, New York allows 1.063 points per possession. When Robinson was on the floor in clutch time, New York allowed 1.303 points per possession. I don’t want a gaudy undersized guard that can’t do anything but shoot. That’s what a rec league is for.

I feel ya, but I dont think he’s that much of a liability, with the offense he really offsets it. He is one of the best bench forces in the league. If the Magic shored up their other depth needs first, and then somehow got Lil Nate too, Im all for it. Huge plus for the bench.
He'd be a decent option at point, but that's about it.

There is no such thing as offense shoring up defense in the NBA.
Progress in games is best made off of stops. You can have the most gifted player in the world, offensively, but it’s easier to get stops than it is to score 2 points per posession. That’s not going to change any time soon.
Flat out, if the guy can’t defend, then his offense can help to alleviate that, but he’ll always be a net loss.
Defense is most important.

"Clutch" doesn't exist.
I’m as opposed to signing Robinson as the next guy, but “clutch” is a fake concept.
Yeah, and we broke your damn shot clock too.
OK, then - statistically, he is much worse with 5 minutes or less in the game, with 5 points or less separating the teams, than in all other scenarios
"When you make your final stand

A function of sample size. He could just as easily be better in those scenarios next year. No credible evidence has ever been found to support the notion that certain players perform better late in close games, or others perform worse. In fact, all the studies suggest the exact opposite.
Yeah, and we broke your damn shot clock too.
