[Ed. note: bumped to front page. This is some weird news. Discuss it here. UPDATE: Turk commits to the Toronto Raptors. - BQR]

The Oregonian has learned that free agent forward Hedo Turkoglu has rejected an offer to sign with the Trail Blazers and has ended negotiations with the team.

He will leave town tomorrow morning.

More to come.

Here's some more

Hedo to Toronto?

5 years and $56 freaking million.

Wowsers.

That makes no sense

For an extra million a year you are giving up the chance to play for a perennial top 4-5 team in the West…to go to a team that’s a borderline playoff team in the East? Really??

Hedo stated he feels more comfortable in Toronto.

.. plus, that’s what his wife preferred.

Toronto is a great city.

People there are very friendly and there is a lot to do. The only down side i found was it’s about $12 for a beer.

Story from link ^^

Free agent Hedo Turkoglu(notes) has backed out of his commitment to the Portland Trail Blazers and plans to sign with the Toronto Raptors, a source close to the talks told Yahoo! Sports on Friday night.

Turkoglu had agreed on a five-year, $50 million deal with the Blazers, but changed his mind and could be headed for a five-year, $56 million deal with the Raptors. Toronto would have to renounce three free agents – Shawn Marion(notes), Carlos Delfino(notes) and Anthony Parker(notes) – to create the cap space for Turkoglu.

Apparently, the Blazers are already busy exploring other free-agent options for the $9 million in salary-cap space.

A source says Turkoglu’s wife wanted badly to live in Toronto, a far more European-style city, and that’s where it appears the Turkish native is headed. The Raptors have embraced the Euro game under GM Bryan Colangelo, building a roster that includes Euro talents Jose Calderon and Andrea Bargnani.

Five years ago, Turkoglu was close to signing with the Phoenix Suns that Colangelo was running, but changed his mind and went to the Orlando Magic.
-—————————————-
I was talking about this with a friend. How Turk would love Toronto most, and his wife and family would love the city too. More money too, just sad the Blazers and Turk lost each other. I hope theres no bad blood there.

.. it was an honest-to-goodness change of heart.

That means Marion's up for grabs

Toronto was offering him like 32 over 4 years, but they’ve got to waive him to make that offer to Turk.

by farfromfl on Jul 3, 2009 10:05 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Eh

If we’re taking on Raptors castoffs, I’d prefer Anthony Parker – at least he’s a reliable three point shooter. Obviously he’s old so it’d only be on a one or two year deal, but he can’t be worth much on the open market.

I think he'd be perfect, but...

…unless he comes for less than the MLE, he’s not coming. Unfortunately, I doubt we’re in the running for any of the remaining big names.

Our best bet is probably splitting the MLE between two (maybe three?) vets and filling the rest with summer campers. McDyess, Hill, Bowen, and Barnes are a few I would like to see here.

by bandrewg08 on Jul 3, 2009 10:13 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

not necessarily

you could sign and trade for Marion and go over the MLE. Might be Marion’s only chance to get money over the MLE and I think he’d fit great in Orlando, definitely worth going to 7-8 million for.

by JSlakov on Jul 4, 2009 1:20 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

.. keep dreaming.

The Magic aren’t going to go after Marion.

Otis has explicitly stated that he intends to split the mid-level exception among a few players.

just saying that a sign and trade wouldnt affect the mid level exception. I’m not even a Magic fan, so I’m not really dreaming, just trying to figure out whats the best for this team. If they would be willing to pay a lot in tax they could get themselves a really strong team.

A sign-and-trade wouldn't affect the MLE.

Here comes Marion

Best case scenario as he will fit in perfectly with this team. An offseason where Anderson, Carter, Marion, and Bass are added might be the single greatest in Magic history.

We won't be able to afford Marion and Bass

We’re not going to offer the full MLE to him, because we have too many spots to fill. Someone will give him the full MLE or possibly more.

Bass is possible, but not with Marion. It’s too bad, because I think he could have gotten somewhere close to his old All-Star form in our system.

Unlikely both Bass and Marion

I agree with bandrewg08, we won’t spend the money for both Marion and Bass.

Eyriq, I’m not so confident that Marion would fit well in our system. While he chucks up a lot of outside shots, his outside shot isn’t consistent enough, to start with. He would, however, combine with Rashard to form the same kind of interchangable 3/4 lineup we had with Turk. That 3/4 combo was deadly for other teams, and he would allow us to keep running it. It’d certainly be interesting.

Everybody here in Portland aren't especially liking Hedo right now....

yeah, i know it’s not a big market, but for God’s sakes, Toronto is buried under 4 feet of snow at least 3 mos out of the year. he’ll probably have to take a dog sled to get to games! Wow, he takes 6$ mil more to go play on a lousy team that WILL lose Chris Bosh next year, instead of coming to Portland where, yes, it rains a lot here, but it’s not too cold and not too hot, you’ve got the mountains and the beach less than 2 hrs away and they have a young and upcoming team that most likely will get to the Western conf finals in a year or two and might have had a chance to win with him on the team!!
I feel like I just got left at the altar!!!!!!!!!!

You might be the only one outside of Portland who thinks that.

A couple of weeks ago I was reading a article on the “10 worst draft picks ever” and Greg was like #4. Which I found funny since he hasn’t even played a whole season in the NBA. I hope next year: Most Improved Player Award!

In fact, it might be a blessing in disguise. Portland doesn’t have to worry about committing a long-term contract to a 30-year old. The Blazers can go out and find a point guard or whatever else the team needs.

There's financial investment

AND there’s emotional investment. There’s also physical investment, but I’m not sure that really applies any more to the Blazers than any other team in the NBA.

My point is that money is one way to build a team. Personally, I think the Blazers are wasting their time trying to get a great player through Free Agency, and I think they’re trying to push this team to a championship level before it’s ready.

Hedo provides the dream

Nobody recently has posted the Magic dream scenario. Sign and trade with Toronto with Hedo, JJ Redick (or Marcin Gortat) and draft picks for Chris Bosh. He’s leaving Toronto, anyway. Toronto may as well keep Marion, Parker and Delfino and get something for them later and get something for Bosh now. Otherwise this doesn’t make a lot of sense for Hedo since he would be paid in Canadian dollars, instead of U$ dollars, so the 56 million is less than 50 million in Portland (except for any taxes).
Does a starting group of Nelson, Carter, Bosh, Lewis and Howard scare the rest of the NBA?

Although we could never pay for those contracts,

and fill the rest of the roster with an anywhere near decent bench, Bosh, Lewis and Howard all playing together probably wouldn’t work that well, not enough shots/touches for each player, way to many dominant players in one line-up

Keep dreaming.

The Raptors are in win-now mode and are trying to convince Chris Bosh to stay. It makes no sense for them to commit so much money to Turk, only to turn around and trade Bosh.

Yes and no

If Bosh won’t re-up long term, why not move him, and get something in return..

This is odd news.

Portland is a wonderful city . Toronto is larger and more cosmopolitan, but after spending time in Sacramento and Orlando, hasn’t Hedo discovered the pleasures of small-town life?

I also don’t understand what Toronto is thinking. Hedo could be a great addition to an already-good team, but Toronto is mediocre at best. Signing Hedo to a 5-year deal will do little to change that fact (and, over the long-term, may trap them in that position).

Given the amount and length of Hedo's new contract...

…Otis’s decision to pick up Vince looks pretty good right now.

by gift of the magi on Jul 4, 2009 2:25 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Eh, they're pretty even,

Carter at 16mil/yr for three years and Hedo at 10mil/yr. for five years.

by Ariel112 on Jul 4, 2009 2:31 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Carter's better

And his contract is dodgeable in the last year and tradeable.

It actually looks like a brilliant move now.

by eltharion_doa on Jul 4, 2009 7:14 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

It looked good from the beginning.

I’ve said this elsewhere & it’s worth repeating .. it would have been killer for the Orlando Magic to commit a long-term deal to Hedo Turkoglu. Look, I’m a Turk fan but he’s 30. Giving him a five year deal would have been the wrong move. Instead, the team has Vince Carter and a short-team contract attached (2 years, with a team option in year 3). It gives Otis Smith flexibility in the future, as the team eventually retools.

Nothing personal. Constantly forgetting to take the cap. button off just decided to continue.

Probably should go no cap at all than i wouldn’t have to worry about it. 4 mil. of the 3rd. is guaranteed. Another couple mil and you got Gortat. Just kidding.
