And so it finally ends . . .
I knew it was a LONG shot but I was still hoping for the best or to at least get something in return :(
I pray that this at least frees up Otis to become more aggro with the top remaining FAs on our list.

Agreed
it’s sad to see Hedo go….but if he was going to sign somewhere else, better to get it done quickly so we don’t miss out on other players whlie still trying to find a way to bring him back.
I honestly don’t understand why Portland was so enamored. They need help at the PG and C positions. They already have plenty of good shooters and wing players.

I don't think the Blazers need help at the center position.
Pryzbilla and Oden is a good combination.

I'm sure you guys will try to convince yourselves that Oden is going to work out
Especially when you wouldn’t need Turkoglu if you had drafted Durant like you should have. Roy and Durant at the 2 and 3 would be downright scary. And I guess going after a center this soon would be an admission by the front office that they made a huge mistake. But I don’t believe Oden is a franchise center.
And Pryzbilla is solid defensively and on the boards, but with the abundance of solid wing players and shooters Portland has…I don’t think they needed to throw this kind of money at Hedo.

I knew he was as good as gone, but...
…that makes essentially 5 players now gone (3 starters) from a team that was only a couple of plays away from being UP 3-1 with a home game 5 to seal the deal. Oye!

OK but honestly
If Nelson never got hurt, Alston never would have been on the team. Battie only counts as half a player because he hardly ever played. And Gortat was good, but we couldn’t sign him to a $5mil a year deal to play 10 minutes a night.
by Lee for three on Jul 3, 2009 2:50 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
I'm not discounting any of these things, BUT...
…it’s just odd to see that many changes on a team that made it to and was competitive in the Finals despite only taking it 5 games. That’s all I’m saying…

In general, these changes were a choice; they were not inevitable
The Magic could have resigned Hedo and not traded Courtney, but they chose a different strategy. (The one exception here is Gortat, who was always long gone.)
I’m not criticizing the strategy— there were good reasons to acquire Vince and give up Lee and, by inference, Hedo (mostly having to do with Hedo’s length of contract). But it’s a risky choice, given how successful the Magic were this past season. I just hope Otis made the right choice.

What er said
Otis Smith made them inevitable by doing it now. In a way, I think it makes the Magic tougher long term.

Hedo
So we gained Vince Carter, Ryan and lost Hedo, Gortat, Lee, Alston, and Battie. We seem to have taken steps backwards here. Unless we can pull in a good PF and a decent backup center, we are going in the wrong direction.

I don't like this move for Portland
SF was not a position they were lacking in. Even if the deal turns out to be closer to the 50 million/ 5 years that ESPN suggests rather than 60 million/ 5 years, that’s too much money for a player that’s significantly older than your core who plays a position you’re already fairly deep in.

They need Hedo
They need another ball handler to run point and make plays and shots. Roy looked like he was alone at times. not anymore tho :) You always want a solid old vet or more with your team, esp. if its all young players.

in a certain respect
the $$ does not matter.
A) we have Paul Allen, aka the richest owner in all US pro sports, $16b
even if that was not the case
B) with extensions kicking in for Roy (max) and LMA (been hearing 10-12) for a total of 20-26m next year this is the last window we have to add anyone of quality for essentially free.
Allen has said that he is willing to open the pocketbooks for this team and it looks like he has. In addition it will not be a 10m/year thing but rather it should start @ 8.5 w/ 10% raises which does not sound as bad as 10m/year.
As for the move, I have been sorely on the fence on the move. On one hand, my personal thoughts and research, I do not get why we went after Turk. We already have a clutch perimeter shooter in Roy, and I think we would of been better served to give minutes to our youngsters in Batum, Bayless and Rudy and bringing in a playoff tested vet in Kidd to allow Bayless to learn off of him.
I wouldnt say that we are deep at SF as really only Batum is a true SF. Outlaw is a skinny PF, and Webster is a G/F who I do not think will even be a viable option this year as he was not that good to begin with and on top of it he now has a chronically injured foot. Even if he is able to make it through TC, he will have not played any organized ball for essentially an entire year and with him being in his 5th year his development is probably halted.
OTOH, I can see how having him run P&Rs with Oden, who stylistically is very similar to Howard offensively, could be a good thing as well as the fact that he can play some point forward and backup PF for us as well.
It looks as though KP and Nate have determined that we need to outscore everyone and while on the fence I guess we will just have to wait and see.

Well, Portland was #1 in offensive efficiency last season.
If the Blazers can match that again next season (certainly possible), all they need to do is be 15th or better in defensive efficiency and they’re fine. There’s different ways of winning championships.
Sometimes maxing out on one end of the court, while being competent on the other end, is enough.

Well, it has it claims and it's empirically proven that ..
.. if you finish with the #1 defensive efficiency ranking in the NBA during the regular season, you have a 60% chance of making it to the Finals. That’s a rough figure Neil Paine told me.

it is done a bit by smoke and mirrors
With Oden and Przy down low, both of them rank top 10 r/min in the league last year and all of our bigs hit the O boards with a vengeance:
Przy came in at 2.5OR/g, Oden came in at 2.8OR/g, and even the much maligned for his rebounding Aldridge came in at 2.9OR/g
OR’s are not counted as another possession in terms of Off Eff, only a continuation of the previous play.
Either way after Turk screwed us, it does not matter anymore. Like I said I am still down with letting Batum, Bayless and Rudy all seeing 20-25+ mpg and letting them develop.

Sad to see him go but he'll have fun on that Portland team....
My only concern If I was a Portland fan is how smart is McMillan really? I thought they would compete with the Lakers in last year’s WCF but they were really dumb excecuting against Houston in the first round and playing right into there hands.
They have even more potential now but will they fundamentally smart enough? I dont know if Hedo adds that for them.

If you asked anyone over at Blazers Edge if they thought they could get HCA in the first round, you’da been laughed at. As for Houston, they were the LAST team we wanted to meet in the first round. Just a bad matchup.

The fact that not too many other places can afford to pay Hedo the type of money Portland was going to give him makes this so puzzling. Would he really turn down$10 mil a year for a guaranteed playoff team for a Toronto or a New York? How much more could they realistically offer him?
