Poll: Grading The Orlando Magic's Off-Season Moves
It's been a while since I've posted a poll here at Third Quarter Collapse, so I figured now would be a good time to gather the pulse of the community on general manager Otis Smith and see how Orlando Magic fans would grade his off-season performance (so far), where he's re-tooled the roster for another championship run.
No, titles aren't won in the off-season. Instead, the foundation is put in place. The construction occurs during the regular season. The finishing touches occur in the postseason. Consider the process Step A, Step B, and Step C, with an end result.
Right now, Smith is putting the pieces together. How well has he done his job?
You be the judge.

Amen to THAT...
After looking at all the deals made in this off-season, ANY objective analyst would have to conclude that the Magic made the MOST substancial improvement of all the teams in the NBA, specially with the ver ylimited resources at hand.
Kudos indeed, for Otis and the Magic management!
Now, if we can only bgring this great group TOGETHER, THEN the Magic are truly on their way to win that coveted Championship this year…
I went with a B.
All of these moves seem pretty solid, but I prefer to wait and see before I pee myself with joy.
"Fun fact: Larry Hughes, who couldn’t stay healthy if all his human parts were replaced with bionic implants, is out for the next four weeks with a bruised leg. Do you think that Willis Reed ever reads about all these players missing time with bruises and sprained fingers and throws up in his mouth a little?"
I would have given him an automatic A, if he had made the move for zombie Wilt.

MOST substancial improvement of all the teams in the NBA.....
one can make a good argument for what the Spurs did also.
Yeah
Spurs had a great off-season. Their only problem is Manu and Timmy D, they have to be healthy.. Not sure that happens.

I think, given who they brought in, health shouldn't be too much of a concern.
Pop is smart enough to pace his players, and I think he’ll have the guys to do that this year.

Wait!!
Are you sure Manu is even healthy? You can pace your players, but if they are hurt, they are just hurt..

Manu will be back, eventually.
As long as he’s healthy come playoff time, that’s all that matters for San Antonio.

My best mate is a Spurs fan
A Magic v Spurs finals would be an epic grudge match.

Would be a great battle of wits between Popovich v. Van Gundy.

Theo Ratliff is not good
and a non-factor come playoff time.
Richard Jefferson is obviously an upgrade but not really someone that would keep coaches up at night. I think the Spurs are getting a little too much hype for the offseason just because they’re the Spurs. People respect their front office automatically. Not unreasonable, but the Magic are too athletic, too deep, have too much flexability matchup-wise, are too good defensively, and now have too much conistent offensive firepower with the addition of Carter and the ability now to matchup Lewis against small forwards in the post for long stretches of time for the Spurs to hang.
Well, San Antonio has made some savvy moves.
I approve of the McDyess signing. Like the Jefferson trade. Love the Blair pick. Granted, Ratliff is done but it doesn’t hurt to have another big man that can, at minimum, give you five fouls.
As long as the team stays healthy, the Spurs will give the Lakers a run for their money.

Spurs did the best, they didnt change themselves at all. Just hitted refresh, and put darn good pieces around their Big 3.
Then every other top team had big off seasons too of A+.
I potentially see Magic having the biggest A+ offseason if Vince Carter and the other adds (particularly Bass, Barnes) mesh in just perfect and win it all by the end of the playoffs, which is very, very possible :)
Yeah, I like what the Spurs did.
I’m eager to see how they perform next season.

Had to go with the B.
Just because I can’t give the A to a team that made one pretty big move I completely disagree with. Which I’ve probably been focusing on too much in recent years — I love the Carter trade. The Barnes signing is a great bargain. Gortat poses a problem, but it’s a good kind of problem. (And if it doesn’t work out with him, we can definitely trade him somewhere.) Ultimately, this is definitely a better team than last year’s — and last year’s team was pretty great already.
He's currently two-thirds man, one-third amazing. Which, let's face it, is still a pretty good ratio.
I guess I haven't been around long enough to know
With what move did you disagree?

The Bass signing, I presume.

Yeah, Bass.
He’s a worse defender and rebounder than Gortat, he’s a worse scorer and rebounder than Anderson, he’s not improving (07-08 stats and 08-09 stats are completely identical), and he’s got no versaility in terms of position. We’re basically paying $4.5 million a year for our fourth-string PF.
He's currently two-thirds man, one-third amazing. Which, let's face it, is still a pretty good ratio.
Oh, and I meant to say "recent weeks".
Not “recent years”.

That threw me off.

Nah.
A) That wasn’t this offseason, and B) I don’t miss Ariza. He doesn’t have a reliable three-point shot; he wouldn’t play for this team. He had a few good games in the playoffs — well, good for him. Dudes who get signed on the basis of a good stretch in the playoffs always get massively overpaid. For the whole season in LA, this guy was a solid backup and that’s it — now he’s suddenly something else? If he had those two good weeks in January rather than May, you wouldn’t hear about it. The guy is a slightly more controlled Pietrus minus the outside shot and the injuries.
He's currently two-thirds man, one-third amazing. Which, let's face it, is still a pretty good ratio.
Oh, yeah. That's probably it.

C'mon what 4 people gave F and D
I gave an A.
Otis is a poker player, he miss-directs Cuban and ends up with Bass and Gortat,
Having Gortat sets us up for the future with the high demand and low supply in the NBA center ranks. Lets see who comes crawling come playoff push time ( cue Houston, Dallas.)
He doesnt over pay a 30ish player for 5 or 6 years (turk) he only does it for 2 years (carter). For better or worse on the court Turk or Carter Carter or Turk its safe to say as players it is a tie. As contracts its a big win for magic. This free’s up 19 or 20 million when carters deal expires. smart smart smart
Oh yeah he gets the guy we wanted last year in the draft (anderson) for the guy we picked because he was best on the board (we also was going to need to pay Lee after his 3rd year)
And having 2 goood FA for the cheap on the board at once, knowing the money only exists to sign one of them. And Otis ends up getting Barnes for Baltic Ave and Mediterranean Place.
And all the deals where not very straight forward with all sorts of exceptions and extra money being made availible through complex dealings that I cant understand. My head stings….
And thru this whole process Otis keeps it cool and keeps on making surprise after surprise happen. I have to believ the master has one more lesson for the NBA community. Dont be shocked if a big deal happens here, why?, because we have several coveted pieces and you never know what star will be dangle for them. And the lure of starting 5 allstars is enticing
A+
Thats me chilling with Nick Anderson
