Around SBN: Jerry Sandusky's Wife Tries To Run A Reporter Over

So Let's Assume . . .

That the rest of the key free agent signings (as far as the Magic are concerned) go as follows . . .

Hedo - Goes to Portland

Gortat - Goes to Houston

Rasheed - Goes to Boston

Bass - Goes to Orlando

McDyess - Stays in Detroit

Ariza - Goes to Cleveland

AND

Let's also assume the Magic fill their remaining holes with NBA filler.

If it all does indeed play out like this, then . . .

How would you rank then rank the Eastern Conference Contenders?

Star-divide

I'd rank them as follows:

1) Boston (IF HEALTHY) - I'm not exactly sure why but the thought of sheed with them just scares the bejeezus out

     of me.

2)  Cleveland - I think Shaq is more HYPE than hero & Ariza IS NOT the Scottie Pippen that Lebron really

needs BUT I do fear those additions would put them SLIGHTLY ahead of us.  :(

3)  Orlando - I think the additions of VC, Bass & Anderson will compensate for the losses of Hedo, Gortat & Lee (just

     not sure by HOW MUCH)

The ONLY X-Factor IMO is Gortat.  IF the Magic can retain him then I think we're ahead of Cleveland and VERY CLOSE to Boston.

SOOO . . . what say you, my fellow Magic fans?  How would YOU rank these Eastern Conference contenders?

IMO, I think you are overestimating the value of Gortat. Don’t get me wrong, I think he is very good. However, I just do not think when we put him out there with Howard it is a very viable lineup. I would rather use that money and get someone who can play alongside Howard and get boards. It is also hard for me to make too big of an opinion having barely seen Anderson.

I loved having Gortat on this team, but for the asking price we can find better ways to spend the money and to further our chances of success.

not just the value of Gortat

but the value of Gortat for this team, he def. has more value for other teams IMO

I'd have to agree.

If Gortat were to come back, which he wont .. that wouldn’t push Orlando past Boston or Cleveland.

So you're saying if Boston gets Sheed and Cleveland gets Ariza . . .

Then we’re the 3rd best team in the east?

I think you give Ariza way too much credit.

Well actually, you just said that yourself according to your own post

No, I'm not. I'm looking at the matchups.

If Boston adds ‘Sheed, than that’s an extremely imposing frontline with him and KG. Orlando has matchup issues with the Celtics, and adding Rasheed Wallace doesn’t make things easier.

Ariza killed the Magic in the playoffs, partly because of Hedo Turkoglu, but even then .. if he signs with the Cavaliers, he can shut down Vince Carter. LeBron James can man up against Rashard Lewis. I can go on .. Cleveland now matches up much better with Orlando.

doesnt make sense to me

Unless they field both Perks and Sheed. Which they wont b/c KG is awesome. Which means they have to pick between Sheed and Perks to guard Dwight, But Perks is maybe the best Dwight defender. Does not make sense to me. Sheed would be better against Cleveland imo.

by derekk on Jul 2, 2009 7:01 PM EDT up reply actions

Doesn't make sense to you?

It’s quite simple, actually. KG and Perk can cause problems for Lewis and Howard, respectively. Add Rasheed Wallace to the mix and the task gets more difficult.

It’s no different than when the Pistons had the Magic’s number in the playoffs. Detroit had a number of big bodies to send at Dwight, and this scenario is no different.

yea but when it comes down to the last 10 mins of a close game, the Celtics arent going to go wily nily on throwing multiple big men anymore. So yes in the sense Dwight will see multiple big men on him, but in critical moments of the games, they arent going to field all 3.

Boston, with a healthy KG, has the advantage on the Magic.

The beauty of having Rasheed Wallace is playing the matchups accordingly .. they could go Wallace/Perkins, Garnett/Perkins, Wallace/Garnett.

Im still reserving judgement but once again you have great points. I just see Perks and KG on the floor when its important still, and KG is Lewis’ defender, and Perks is Dwight’s best defender. Sheed can make a bench impact perhaps, but these are two teams who prefer not to play their benches much. See Moore, Marbury of last yr.

by derekk on Jul 2, 2009 8:37 PM EDT up reply actions

I see alot of merit in your Cle matchups IF they get Ariza, but he did not stop Turk that much defensively, it was mostly killing Turk on offense. AND we dont know how he’ll fare on Lewis or Carter, so Im not on board with that idea just yet. Plus, if Dwight improves and Shaq ages, I think Shaqs statistical trend of good defense on Dwight ends, esp. after a series starts getting deeper.

by derekk on Jul 2, 2009 7:04 PM EDT up reply actions

He was disruptive with the 3/5 pick & roll ..

.. as Kevin Pelton pointed out in his article. Granted, Hedo is gone, but that doesn’t change the fact that Ariza can be a good perimeter defender for the Cavaliers.

you cant even assume we'll get Bass, he wants the FULL MLE

And Gortat made a verbal commitment to Mavs apparently. Likely the full MLE and Im happy for him. Im wondering if Dallas is interested in S/Ting Bass for Gortat tho, to save the MLE and cap space.

by derekk on Jul 2, 2009 6:26 PM EDT reply actions

Doubt a sign-and-trade will happen.

.. but the Mavericks signing Gortat is a good sign for the Magic. Makes attaining Bass a bit easier.

Why not?

IF Hedo AND Gortat leave then I think Otis will feel the pressure to add some more quality talent other than VC.

It’s a fairly safe assumption, IMO and the inevitable signings by our EC rivals are sure to put the pressure on the Magic to step up.

This whole thread is just speculation anyways but I do believe it’s the MOST LIKELY scenario based on everything I’ve been reading. The most doubtful FA on the list is Gortat which is why I couldn’t definitively GUESS his future.

by blue-blood on Jul 2, 2009 6:38 PM EDT up reply actions

Where Gortat heads is irrelevant to the Magic because it has no direct bearing on the team.

Where Wallace heads or Ariza or Artest or whoever else .. matters because it’s the C’s and the Cavs.

I wasn't implying that it did . . .

Just stating that the Magic would be further motivated by having lost even more talent . . .

Especially when the other “Eastern Elites” continue to upgrade.

Maybe.

maybe too,

but the Magic would have to see the depth be problematic and the other teams playing very well to be motivated more than they alrdy are. I see a good point tho that could be right.

The teams in the west are just laying down for the Lakers.

So it will be LA and SA in the West conference finals.

I sure hope you're right!!

But with Artest going to LA, Ariza’s as good as gone and the Cavs seem to be the favorite!

In the least

We will have a worse bench this year…by any measure. Im really worried about that, is a better starting lineup worth having a worse bench?

by Kennedy K on Jul 2, 2009 8:21 PM EDT reply actions

Depends.

Having a good bench is important ..

Yes. Basic playoff rules, teams play starters much more minutes than in regular season. Im convinced Backup PG is the same, backup PF will be better by playoffs, leaving a backup C who will pla 7-8 mins in a playoff game and a backup wing spot, where JJ is a x factor to me at the moment.

by derekk on Jul 2, 2009 8:35 PM EDT up reply actions

trade jj redick and jameer i know i will get some heat with this but he’s good for maybe 2-3 years and besides he’s injury prone he can’t even have a full seson with the magic if we can trade them for assets such as jarret jack, outlaw, pryzibilla fernandez then maybe we can address both the length issues and defense as well as our bench

by caputrukahs on Jul 3, 2009 2:13 AM EDT reply actions

Probably .. the stupidest idea I've heard in a while.

Let’s trade an All-Star point guard in his prime on an affordable contract.
