A league source confirmed this morning that the Celtics were trying to set up a meeting with Rasheed Wallace later today. The sit-down was said to be part of a series of meetings being set up with all of the teams interested in signing the free agent power forward/center. San Antonio and Cleveland — which introduced Shaquille O’Neal as its latest addition today — were also supposed to meet with Wallace today.
According to the source, the Celtics are willing to offer the full $5.8 million mid-level exception, but were only planning on offering the 35-year-old a two-year contract.

Doesn't look like Rasheed Wallace will be landing with the Orlando Magic. General manager Otis Smith has stated that he's aiming to split the Mid-Level Exception, which is less than what the Boston Celtics are willing to offer for 'Sheed.

what's pissing me off
is that he’s not even attempting. this sucks. we better get bass then.

Well .. we don't know that.
No one knew Otis was attempting to get Vince Carter until the trade was practically done.

fair point.
i don’t know if i think otis is a genius or has just gotten lucky.
i mean, the ariza trade last year kinda knocks “genius” out of contention…
www.last.fm/user/mhetrick04
And the full MLE?
I don’t know how good an idea this is.
We shouldn’t match that. Otis knows what he is doing.
Seeing as Sheed made like $13 mil last year and avg

I apparently shot my wad too soon on that last post
And I don’t know how to get rid of it.
Anyways, the point I was trying to make was I never believed we were going to get Wallace for dirt cheap. The guy made $13 mil last year and still put up 12 and 8 a night. Not superstar numbers, but surely better than a guy we were going to have to pay more than 2-3 mil a year.
I think Smith needs to go balls to the wall to land Wallace. If that means putting up the full MLE so be it. He’s too good of a fit for our team too pass up and he’s killed us too many times to let one of our top competitors land him.

I understand wanting to sign him
but given that our Summer roster has a lot of very good big man options, and rather lacking in rotation wing players, where are we going to get the money to sign a viable rotation wing if we sing Sheed to the full MLE?
I don’t think it makes sense from a team perspective.
Tough to say.
It’s a hard balancing act because on the one hand, you don’t want Rasheed Wallace landing in Boston for matchup reasons, but on the other hand, you want to allow yourself the flexibility to sign a number of guys and fill up the roster. Signing ‘Sheed to the full MLE makes it difficult for Otis to do that .. that’s a battle he might have to concede, for financial reasons, and look elsewhere for options, whether it’s Antonio McDyess, Brandon Bass, etc.

You talking about Otis?
Did you know about Alston and Carter before they were signed? Otis Smith is a smart man and I have total confidence in him. A good GM does things hush hush and tries not to give away what he is doing. I look for a pleasant surprise from Smith.
dude's,
i’m reactionary as they come. i said “season over” after we started 0-2 haha

LMAO.
.. it’s straight, dude. I can understand the frustration.

give me Bass and Barnes..
I would be happy. Dice would be great, but it appears he loves Detroit?

Good fit for both parties.

Ariza
thought he was hurting the Lakers and they just go stronger..
1- He is better then Ariza
2-Artest was the best player on the team that played LA toughest in the Playoffs..

- I don’t think he’s better than Ariza.
- He DEFINITELY wasn’t the best player on the Rockets when they played the Lakers tough. That title can go to Aaron Brooks .. who tore Los Angeles apart.

from ESPN.com
Artest has reached an agreement with the Lakers on a three-year, $18 million contract, the Los Angeles Times reports. (Jul 2)
For the 1st 3 games Ron Artest was the best player..
he is a better 3 point shooter by Avg over Ariza(ariza just got hot in the playoffs), plus he got open looks because of Kobe. His % wouldn’t be that if he was starting for the Rockets. Artest is a better rebounder and defender.. Ariza can’t create his own shot Artest can from the top of the key and the low block. Ariza is good at going by you when you run out or knocking down the open shot. Ron is better at getting his own points.

Artest is a better defender than Ariza ..
.. but offensively, that’s going to be an issue. As I said elsewhere, Ron is a high-usage, inefficient player, the opposite of Trevor. That might be a problem for L.A.’s offense.

i disagree
Artest doesn’t have to get his shot with the Lakers, he will have so many open looks his % will go up.. Artest is a really smart basketball player, he will adapt.
The fact that we are debating who is better Artest or Ariza is funny to me.. Artest is season vet who has proved himself year over year.. Ariza had one good playoff run as 3rd option and that is it..

It's not a clear cut answer as you think.
I agree Artest doesn’t have to get his shot with the Lakers and he can adapt, but there’s no guarantee that he will. That’s the unknown factor.

You think?
Artest’s a ball hog, he’s going to kill their offense.

I'm not too worried.
Otis has always gotten the job done and filled whatever need. He just plays closer to the chest then some GM’s, like Morey calling for emails.
Though Boston having Sheed + Perkins to guard Dwight with would suck hugely.

Well, at least Ariza is in Houston. That's good for Orlando.
.. Wallace will probably land in Boston, which is bad, but eh .. we’ll see what happens.

Good thing
Neither Artest or Ariza ended up in Cleveland.
