Suggestions To Improve Create A Caption

The title is self-explanatory, but I'll go ahead and explain myself .. just in case.

Third Quarter Collapse has been running create a caption competitions for the past five months and the format hasn't changed, at all. People post a caption, people vote on them, and there is a winner. Given that 3QC is steadily approaching Create A Caption #25, I think now is a good time to figure out ways to make the contest better for the community before changes are made. So, with all that said ..

.. if you have an idea to make the caption competitions better, share 'em. Once there is a general consensus among 3QCers on which suggestions are good and sensible, I'll go ahead and implement them in due time. Let the think tank begin.

Do you guys get any free stuff at these Magic media days?

If so, or if you can get any stuff, maybe put that up as a prize or something?

Or at least have an ongoing competition

for a prize. Maybe the first to 5 wins. Or The most after each 25 or something to that extent.

Yeah, that could work.

I've been wanting to do prizes, but I've been trying to see how feasible the idea is.

Ben and I don’t get any free stuff. In any case, I definitely would like to do prizes ..

Only problem with that is the post will eventually get bumped off the front page.

I don’t mind running the contest a little longer, but I want to make sure it’s on the front page.

Consistent Dates

would be huge. Sometimes I miss the contest because it is below two or three other posts. If I know when to look for it, that would be nice.

Yes,and make it longer,definitely.

I believe it wont get pushed off the front page in 48 hrs,so no problem there.
Maybe when season starts, but we’ll solve that then:)
How about putting it in Fanposts? If you check the names of “writers”,they are mostly regulars,so no big loss,I guess, even if it’s not on the front page, and it won’t get pushed off etc.

Two (or three) phases

First part (24-48 hours) could be run as the current format. People suggest captions and rec feature is used to filter the finalists. The number of finalists may depend on a minimum number of recs. Then in a new post or by bumping and editing the original post add a poll and people could vote on the poll for the best caption. Actually there may be another round where the community also choses the picture to run the contest on. This way each week we can run a contest and there may be an overall winner after some number of weeks.

The schedule could look like this:

Picture round (Monday – Tuesday) : Editors post candidate pictures and a poll.
Elimination Round (Wednesday – Thursday) : Community sends captions for the poll winner picture and recs are gathered to determine the finalists.
Final round (Fri-Sat-Sun) : Community votes by a poll for the winner. In addition, users can suggest pictures at the comments for next week’s contest to help editors.

I believe, a periodic schedule and rounds like this will get more people involved and make the contest much more fun. You don’t have to win it all, you can be quite happy when your picture suggestion is chosen for the next contest or your caption makes it to the final round. Statistic lovers can keep a running tally of the contributions made by the users.

As for keeping it at the front page, I don’t know how much power editors have but there may be a constant location at the sidebars sort of like a featured story or the current “Quotes from Coaches” box/block. So even if it is not at the center column of the front page I can scroll there and click my way to the relevant post.

Tags/Category and a Menu item

Another way to make people access to the contest may be using a tag/category specific to these kind of contest posts (like the current “Diversions” category) and then add a menu item (like Roster) or a constant link to that category page. So even if I don’t see the post at the front page I can click there and find the latest post.
