Around SBN: 'You Just Have to Put Him to Sleep'

[Marquis] Daniels said the Orlando Magic have called "a couple times" and are among about 10 teams who have contacted his agent. He listed Dallas, Boston, New York, Charlotte, Houston and Chicago as options. A sign and trade is one option he said might come through.

Tania Ganguli of the Orlando Sentinel, who continues to be right on top of Magic free-agency news.

UPDATE: Daniels has agreed to a one-year deal with Boston worth $1.9 million, Yahoo! Sports reports.

Daniels would be a questionable fit in Orlando's offense, as a career 24% three-point shooter

But for versatility—he can play anywhere from point guard to small forward—and for scoring off the bench, he’d work out okay, I suppose.

My feeling is that the Magic are much more interested in Matt Barnes, and that Daniels could be a contingency plan.

Agree with BQR completely

…We can deal with a 4 who lacks a 3-point shot (i.e., Bass), but our 2/3 players must knock that shot down. Daniels is interesting, but he’s probably not right for our team.

Right, yeah.

The perimeter players need to be able to shoot effectively from the perimeter, have to spread the floor.

Not a bad option at all

A local guy that is a versatile SG/Sf. I believe he is also quit the passer from what I saw. He won’t space the floor like our other guards but that doesn’t mean he won’t help the Magic

Not a bad backup plan if you ask me

question Ben are there any rumblings about the Magic and Von Wafer???

No rumblings, whatsoever.

I like Daniels

but I don’t think he’s a good fit for Orlando nor is Orlando a good fit for him. He’s just coming off a career high 31 mins a night. With Orlando’s depth, he’s realistically looking at half of that. And even more concerning than the fact that he shot 20% from 3 last year is that he still took about 2 3-pointers a night.

it depends

my view of potentially signing daniels is entirely contingent on the team’s perception of his ability to play PG if needed — i.e. is he a true combo guard? he played pg for awhile in dallas and put up some really nice nums, but has played mostly 2/3 in indy. i still think our biggest need is a combo guard who can (i) give us some solid mins behind vince (yes, i’m in the camp that would rather not have jj consistently on the floor for us) and (ii) give us some solid mins at the point if either jameer gets hurt again or if this is the year that dad loses his mojo.

i’m also not a big proponent of every player needing to be a good 3-pt shooter. there are plenty of other ways to win games — this is just the way we’re most accustomed to at this point. marquis catching the rock 20 feet from the rim after a double team on dwight, pump-faking his recovering defender out of his jock, and driving to the hoop for a layup isn’t a sequence that would bum me out.

Ben echoed my sentiments. Daniels would be a questionable fit.

I’d prefer Barnes, in this case. Mainly because his ability to shoot the three better.

BQR

Based on the Celtics article from Tweeter, Daniels wants more then we can offer.

screw daniels

daniels is a sell out he goes to boston for 1.9 i bet we offered a similar amount but i do like c.j watson and remember that 4 way trade we did, dint we get like a million dollars cant we use that to sign matt barnes
starters: howard, bass, lewis, vince, meer
bench: gortat, anderson, barnes, peaches, watson
can you smell a championship run???

As far as I know, the Magic never made a formal offer, and Daniels would have been a contingency if preferred targets (like Barnes) got away from them

And the Magic can’t use the money they acquired in the four-team trade to sign a free-agent. They’re limited to the $1.8 million of the MLE they have left. After that, they can only sign players to contracts worth the league minimum based on their years of NBA service.
